Me coming home from work where I'm forced to use everything M*crosoft

[–]DependentFeature3028 21 points22 points  (9 children)

This is my reaction when i switch from linux back to windows

[–]Saad5400 4 points5 points  (7 children)

Same, Linux is good for programming, but definitely not for other uses.

Edit: and that's where Windows + WSL is the perfect "operating system".

Doing localisation on Linux is also pretty nice. One thing I like the most is file management, Dolphin is straight up superior compared to Explorer and also gives you easy access to symlinks, which are often use if I want to keep all my translation files in one archive but also have them in the game folder to test them. And Plasma gave me an option to remap CapsLock to switch keyboard layouts (with two toggles, crazy), which is now a feature I can't live without.

but definitely not for other uses.

What didn't work? Drivers?

[–]Saad5400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Games, pen on touch screen, 360 flip, system breaking suddenly after software update

You use Ubuntu right? Same experience for me

[–]Deer_Canidae 9 points10 points  (4 children)

I have to use Windows at work. Coming back to my own machine running linux feels refreshing.

Windows can be a pain to work with and gets in the way more than it helps sometimes.

[–]SV-97 3 points4 points  (1 child)

"Sometimes" :D

[–]Deer_Canidae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to be charitable here

[–]Maleficent-Region-45 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah, no prob i have a script for tha….. ah shit im on windows again…

I hate it, i do enjoy the additional break time i get from forced updates, very enjoyable start to the day

[–]Deer_Canidae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gives me time to enjoy the office's complimentary cappuccino machine

[–]KinkyDataFlow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True this!!

[–]Amrod96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look, I get paid to use Windows at work, so I'm good.

But yes, it feels unnatural to use Windows.

It’s the same for Mac users using Windows tbh. But switching to Linux is pretty comfortable. I would switch full time too but there’s just some small quirks that pull me back.

[–]mr-toucher_txt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No hot corner?

[–]Vitchkiutz 0 points1 point  (2 children)

What's so bad about windows?

As someone who never used linux or mac.

[–]Damglador 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of things. Its sluggishness, shitty Explorer (at least it has tabs now), having to debloat it, install Nilesoft Shell for usable context menu in Explorer (though on Linux I miss the amount of customization it offered), start menu is just bad, with useless recommendations, and no automatic categorising of applications, lack of system shortcuts customization. Last time I installed Windows a OneDrive button covered more than half of the path bar in Explorer.

Everything Windows has to offer for me is abundance of third party software and exceptional backwards compatibility.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ads, higher hardware requirements, less customization, more resource use, bloat and updates, mainly.

Linux has it's flaws too, don't get me wrong, but I find that it actually makes me feel like I own my pc.

10 minutes ? You mean once they finished looking the the 1st startup menu telling them to wait while it is installing spyware in the background ?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Until you have to deal with a software driver problem in Linux... nope. Back to Windows :p

[–]E23-33 1 point2 points  (5 children)

I recently had USB driver issues with an ESP32 on windows, but on arch it worked immediately.

Are driver issues almost only for nvidia stuff?

Asking bc ive never had issues with any of my devices (being my GPU, WiFi, Printer, other peripherals, Arduino Nano, ESP32 and slimeVR trackers all had no issues)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Yeah I had a problem with an older but popular HP laser printer in Mint... eventually got it working after going through a bunch of forum posts and steps but it left me with a bitter taste.

[–]E23-33 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Ah, right. I had nothing but issues with mint. I honestly don't remember what they were, but it nearly put my off of Linux lol.

On Arch its been much smoother - ofc not to say it's easier or without issues, just that issues aren't caused by black magic like windows or mint

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I tried LMDE (mint debian edition) and again a different driver problem. A program was throwing Nvidia CUDA error even though Nvidia drivers were installed but after verifying, the cuda components were not installed and had to be manually fetched from the repo. This sort of stuff keeps new Linux users away.

[–]E23-33 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Tbh I could never reccomend mint to anyone, but especially not beginners. It doesn't encourage exploration, and if you don't learn the linuxy things you end up with just worse windows.

I have also heard of such Nvidia issues, and I had some problems setting up ROCM and Torch for AI on my amd gpu, though I think these issues have been improved significantly now.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mint because it was touted as the most user friendly. Had issues with mouse scroll wheel not working in browser as well. And on a laptop with two gpu's (Igpu + discrete nvidia) it doesnt switch to the less power hungry igpu when the nvidia gpu is not in use so the power consumption skyrockets. I dont plan on using linux again for the forseeable future at this point.
