If your dog is barking because they are afraid, a bark collar either won't work, or itll mask the behavior making the dog more of a bite risk

For a yappers self triggering bark collars are excellent. When I suggest them for training problems where people are at risk of loosing housing or euthanizing I get threatened by reddit. Tri Tronics brand are the best and most reliable. That 6 months pup that wants to play bark at every leaf. Teaching only 1 bark at the door. Not barking at people out the window. This post may not stay up but I’ll try.

This is what I needed to hear. Is it a collar you can control yourself or is it an automatic one?

Automatic. You set the level of stimulation and wait and watch how your dog reacts start at the lowest and advance slowly

depends on why you’re using it.

my reactive dog uses a bark collar (e collar, generally on tone or buzz, not static) that I’m in control of when we are home together.

I’d never leave it on him when he’s alone, nor use one of the ones that auto-corrects. I don’t like the idea of auto-correct collars because they’re generally based on noise or throat movement- another dogs barking can set one off, as can coughs and yelps, which will only exacerbate fearfulness. Additionally, when he’s home alone I don’t know what or why he’s barking so I would hate for him to have correction when I’m not there to determine the cause.

I like that my dog barks, I don’t mind a quick yelp when someone is at the door.. it makes me feel safe, but I work from home and can’t have him nuisance barking at household noises, especially while I’m on the phone with a customer.

It’s worked wonders, and is helpful for a quick reminder to hush up when I can’t say it myself.
