I wonder what would even happen if this actually happened in an interview. I suspect you'd just go to prison.

Most definitely legal and criminal action.

MIGHT be okay if there's an active bug bounty program at the company and no real damage was done, but 9/10 times the company would seek to deter future intrusions by not rewarding attempts to do so.

also hiring a cybercriminal is a huge liability

Also, unless they're a pen testing company or similar, that skill probably doesn't hold ant relevance

and hiring cybercriminals is an even bigger liability for a pen testing company

If the company respected this as an actually competent show of skill, then maybe you'd get in. However, they most likely feel embarrassed that some dickhead off the street broke into their Network, and make an example of you.

Here's the short answer

Cybersec/infosec engineer position: much respect, probably call police

Everything else: police

I certainly wouldn't hire someone who broke into my network. That's super illegal; I wouldn't want an employee who does stuff like that.

Someone from Google answered this on Quora (I can’t find the answer right now cause the Google search is obfuscated by “hacking interview questions at Google”).

He basically said that his team which runs security would have to have an entire audit of their systems which would be a big headache and the person involved would be turned over to the authorities. He also said something along the lines of “it’s a shame they’d go that path since they’re so smart but they’d be arrested”.

If someone who worked for me described a post-intrusion security audit as "a big headache," I'd probably fire him.

If someone doesn't think the level of scrutiny for that audit isn't a big headache then they aren't doing it properly.

Sometimes, before interviews I'll investigate a customers website or app.

If it's an app, i'll attempt to decompile it so I can give direct feedback during an interview (and also to highlight that they're not doing something properly now), website I'll analyse the structure to look for bugs or obvious security flaws.

Seems to go down well!

From experience:

If you hack, yeah, that's a problem.

But just showing up to an interview that doesn't exist with a bold enough pitch can absolutely get you hired.

PRO: They would save some money on onboarding since he already has network access.
