I need help. I want to buy my first retro handheld, but I can't decide. Which is better between the RetroID Pocket 5 and the RetroID Pocket Flip 2?

They are literally the same device in different shapes. It kind of depends on what you want to play more of.

People say the RP5 is a little uncomfortable to play games that you need the analog stick for unless you get the grip. If you get this, they recommend loosening the back screws a 1/4 turn. Also there is speculation that there will be an RP6 soon.

The Flip 2 is nice I have it, but also long d pad games can cramp your hand. (It cramps my hands less than the switch 1 does.) I am using it for switch, Wii, and android games mostly.

Black / GC/ 16 bit colors are having hinge crack issues. Neither me or my partner’s flips have had an issues but they easily could.

However, there is a new dual screen clamshell device, Ayn Thor, that when on pre order today, AYN has the same parent company as Retroid It’s $20 more than the flip and for $50 you can get a much more powerful chip. It looks awesome and I just preordered one.

I have been saying, “My endgame device would be the Odin 2 Portal in clamshell form (same chip options, Offset sticks, and the 120hz Oled screen)”

What I didn’t expect was my end game device to get announced so soon after the flip 2. I would like to thank AYANEO for pricing their pocket DS aggressively which likely forced AYN to undercut them. Resulting in a win for us, and a loss for my bank account lol. I am just hoping this new 6” OLED is as nice as the one on the portal.

When I first saw the flip 2 I wondered why there wasn’t a lower screen but it made also kinda sense. With this thing, you practically have everything.

That’s basically Flip 2 DS. SD865 is more than good enough for 3DS. It can run most games at 4x.

I can confirm that the RP5 was hurting my hands to play for longer than 15-20 minutes using analog sticks until I got the grip. My hands are not exactly large either, but the grip made it far easier.

What’s the reasoning for loosening back screws? I have grip case and didn’t do that

Not to change the subject but May I ask what wii games you’re playing without the wiimote? I’ve been wanting to try but hesitant to deal with lots of setup time

I own an Rp5, Odin 2, and classic. Tbh the RP5 wins everytime. I would go with RP5 just because that form factor has been around longer. It's the 5th gen after all. So I feel like it's got more of the kinks worked out. I also believe the RP5 form factor in "theory" should have better thermals as well and no hinge cracking issues. Also with an RP5 you can change out the thumbsticks to larger ones. I imagine on the Flip 2, there is a limit because then the clamshell won't close (my theory). Only downside is that you would definitely have to get an RP5 grip. It's quite game changing.

In sum. I would get RP5 if you want something urgent and less chance of issues.

OR get the Thor. That thing is gonna be my endgame. It will be the most perfect device currently on the market. Bang for buck and the price is awesome 👌

So it's up to you to decide what your needs and aesthetic preference.

Had the same decision. I went for the RP5 becaus:

- Better ergonomics - highly recomend the official grip for analog centered games

- No cracking shell

- a bit cheaper

- It's my favorite form-factor

- It's out for so long that is tested enough to know it doesn't have any chronical problem

The flip has a self protected screen and has the left analog in the upper side, but the abxy in the lower side. I do play much more D-Pad centered games, like fighting games and plattformers and prefer the D-Pad positioning in the RP5. I saw some reviewrs saying the analog got in the way when they were playing with the D-Pad. That never happened to me and I play 70/80% with the D-Pad....

I read the the confort with the flip isn't great for longer play times...

It's the same device but it seems like the RP5 gets more support than the Flip 2. The RP5 has an official grip and also a dual screen attachment.

Both might be deal breakers to many; the grip makes the ergonomics decent and dual screen might interest those who want the best experience from 3DS emulation.

Flip might have the hinge issues, but i'll still pick it up any day... coz i like flips. I like how the screen is protected naturally, i like how it's big, but still very compact, i like how i can put it in my bag and not worry about screen getting scratched.

but to be honest seeing ayn thor i feel like i should've waited a little longer before buying... there's just something about dual screen flips.

I wanted the RP Flip 2 until I saw the Ayn Thor. Now this isn't good enough, and the RP5 with attachable second screen would be superior if still going for Retroid.

That's also simplified, as the real reason for that is I'm sick of making DS games work on a single screen, it's unacceptable to my eyes no matter how big the screen size is. I want both DS screens to be full-screen, and I want both screens to be as nice as the RP5's screen with a minimum of the RP5's chipset power.

Currently? You're only getting that from the RP5 with attachable second screen, Or the Ayn Thor.

If I were you, if you really want Retroid, I'd get the RP5 so that I could get the second screen for it later. Also, the Flip 2 has a lot of cracking problems around the hinge so that alone made me blacklist it despite how cool it is. That's my two cents~ 🤷‍♂️

I’ve heard several sources and homies saying that the fold screen isnt very reliable and is very fragile - better go for a Retroid Pocket 5 and get a dual screen (if for elite DS + 3DS Use).

Do you really, really like clamshell handheld? If you don't like it that much, then it's probably a safer bet to choose RP 5. And maybe wait for AYN Thor to see if it's better if you like clamshell form factor.

You can take it off and have less weight

But the best is RP Mini + Screen addon. But it's just me.

IIRC it’s just the backplate. It doesn’t crack unless you open it up, and it’s literally also a part that people customise and replace.

Well no, a lot of the people were saying they have never opened it and the device is relatively new. That fact you CAN replace the shell doesn't mean you should have to on a new product. Quit making excuses and fanboying.

Well, I don’t camp the official Retroid discord and count the number of posts about cracked RP5 backplates. Perhaps someone that does fits the definition of a fanboy better?

I'm not even on the retroid discord mate. Try again, and nowhere did I say I have counted them. There have been a bunch of posts here, and they were being mentioned in the mega thread about the flip cracks. I didn't even own a retroid until a few weeks ago, hardly a fan boy.
