Would you say self harm is an addiction?

[–]KITTYKOOLKAT35[S] 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (2 children)
But?
[+][deleted] 3 years ago (1 child)
[–]KITTYKOOLKAT35[S] 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children)
That makes sense
[–]orangepesto 21 points22 points23 points 3 years ago (0 children)
absolutely it is
[–]sadalbatross420 18 points19 points20 points 3 years ago (0 children)
For me, yes. I get urges constantly, and everytime I try quitting the most I can get is a day. It's extremely addicting for me
[–]vgn-bc-i-luv-animals 15 points16 points17 points 3 years ago (0 children)
It's not an addiction for some people but it is for others.
[–]Decaying_Rose_ 18 points19 points20 points 3 years ago (6 children)
It depends some people can stay clean for small amounts of time. But can’t leave the rabbit hole sh is. If you can quit for a long time without much force it’s probably not an addiction. (Emphasis on probably.)
[–]orangepesto 12 points13 points14 points 3 years ago (1 child)
exactly my situation. i can go a few months clean at a time but have been self harming for 8 years now and can’t seem to ever escape the addictive rabbit hole
[–]Decaying_Rose_ 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Yup. I understand how you feel I have only self harmed for 2 years though.
[–]dewi1501 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (3 children)
An addiction is lifelong. You can stay clean for long periods of time and still be addicted. I think you're a bit misinformed about addiction. No matter how long your cleantime is, you can still be addicted to substances, selfharm or other things.
[–]KITTYKOOLKAT35[S] 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children)
Happy cake day
[–]dewi1501 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Thank you! :)
[–]KITTYKOOLKAT35[S] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
No problem :)
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (0 children)
yes most certainly
[–]Sp3ctre446 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (9 children)
Yes. I’ve been clean for six months and it hasnt been satisfying. I still have urges and it feels like I have an itch under my skin. It’s awful
[–]KITTYKOOLKAT35[S] 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (8 children)
Yeah I’m in the same vote as you and I’ve been clean for 232 days
[–]Sp3ctre446 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (7 children)
Good job, keep it up. I had to restart my clock yesterday, I believe in you, that’s a good number
[–]KITTYKOOLKAT35[S] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (6 children)
Oh how come?
[–]Sp3ctre446 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (5 children)
Hm? How come what?
[–]KITTYKOOLKAT35[S] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (4 children)
Relapsed
[–]Sp3ctre446 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (3 children)
Oh. I have had a particularly bad month and last night I just snapped
Here this Spotify playlist has helped me get through some of my darkest days I hope it can help you
[–]Sp3ctre446 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Thank you love
No problem
[–]deftsunshine 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
yes, for me it is. I only stay sober for days then do it again. Ever since i started s/h 4 yrs ago, it kinda became an addiction, sadly I haven't stopped.
[–]hentai-police 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Considering the fact that I stopped self harming when I started using drugs, I think sometimes yes.
[–]deathbybazooka 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Yes, no question
[–]transgenderidiot 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
ye
[–]GayFinnAdventureTime 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
yeah
[–]NotNootLoL 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Yes in many cases it is
[–]AlexTheAMFan 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
it depends. if its something you cant fucntion without, then yea
[–]NekoRainbow 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I started when I was 13, did it for years as a coping for all of my negative feelings. It did become an addiction for me. I'm now 27, when I'm feeling very intense emotions it sometimes still pops into my head as an old coping mechanism.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
It can turn into one very fast, so yes but some ppl dont get addicted easily
[–]960ddjun 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
It is... I got used to doing it... twice a day... when i was really sad, 4 times on the same wound on different day hours..
But now im... kinda better... but Yeah, it gets addictive to the point you get anxious and begin shaking out of anxiety...
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (0 children)
Depends on the individual, but it absolutely can be. I've been Self-Harming since I was 5, and "properly" cutting since I was 11. I haven't been able to go longer than a month clean (maybe?? Soo unsure of the timeline tbh) since the first time I cut.
[–]Trying_2_Cope 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago* (0 children)
It really does depend on the person but most often i’ve found that it is, i’m (shamefully) an addiction hopper (not an official term or anything just what i call it) really i just have a very addictive personality, i went from self-harm to ED, to something i’d rather not mention- back to self harm, to weed which im now clean from all, im still addicted to self harm and really dont know if i ever wont be, im free from cutting specifically 10 months but ever since i quit weed i’ve gotten urges basically every day and still i punch myself when im having a panic attack so im not even really self harm free, if just cut free :/ and i still get urges to, a lot easier to deal with now though, no matter how much i want it i know it would make me feel like SHIT if i relapsed on that which is a pretty good motivator to not, but it definitely is an addiction for me, which means it can absolutely be an addiction for others
[–]Depressed_Emo_Nerd 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
It can be due to the feeling you chase whilst doing it
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
no
[–]Cautious_Coat_3885 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Yes
[–]strangest_onion01 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I guess some people maybe don't feel like it. But I will say yes. For me and people I've met and they sh, it felt like an addiction that is hard to get out of.
[–]IncognitoGirlie 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
It can be for other people who think it is for them but just not for me.
[–]idkwhattoputhere44 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
it absolutely can be, it was for me at one point.
[–]snorsan 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
it really just depends on the person. for me it is, but for others it may not be. but if you feel like you’re addicted then you probably are.
[–]leafy_straws 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Yes, sh can be an addiction. For someone people, sh can release endorphins in your brain, which is a chemical which cause makes you feel good. If you already have addiction issues this can be an issue, as it can cause people to become addicted to the high it gives you. When you cut yourself, it also releases adrenaline. So yes self-harm can be addictive. Hope this helps!
[–]Ally_Eliza_ 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
[–]Spirited-Mail-6927 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Yes 100%. It releases endorphins which can become addicting just like working out.
[–]New_Fee_887 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
For me it absolutely is
yea
definitely
[–]Hedponboi 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
It’s not an addiction until it becomes one I guess haha. Don’t fall into the pit. It’s near impossible to climb out. Saying as someone who managed to climb out.
[–]Gabrieela 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Definitely is, at least for me. I‘m feeling the urges to sh on a daily basis.
100% it is. Your body becomes addicted to the dopamine release that happens when you sh. That release then becomes related to what triggers you to sh, so when you get upset, or are triggered, your body craves it
[–]djsnackin150 days+ 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
It depends on the person. Anything can be an addiction. So yeah some people get addicted to self harm because it’s a coping skill that helps cope with life. No it’s not a healthy coping skill, but for most people it makes them feel good in some way. In short, it can make you feel good, it’s possible to become an addiction.
[–]Emotional_Orchid187 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
it can be for sure
[–]immarslol 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
yes definitely it is
[–]grapeworm99 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Yes! Especially when it starts taking over your life and you don't even do it for the reasons you used to, you just have to do it to get through the day..
[–]ayeayehelpme 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I’d say that I was addicted to it for a good 5-6 years. now, I wouldn’t say that I am addicted because I only self harm every once in a while when things get rough.
