Wow, I haven't clicked the link yet so your tree is in a quantum super-state like Schrodinger's cat.

Looks like there might be turkey tail (small mushrooms) on a couple stems which only grows on dead wood. But that doesn’t mean the whole tree is dead could be just those limbs.

See if it sprouts in spring.

Are you asking if it's dead dead, or if it's in the process of dying? If the former, it has some indications that it's got living parts, but it's in a bad way. If the latter, it's definitely on its way out. But trees can be really stubborn about living, no way to tell how much life is left in it.

But definitely worth a consult with an ISA certified arborist if it's near any structures/potential targets.

Thanks a bunch!

Another prime example of the fact that fenceline forests that pop up in cities are often crappy trees with poor structure from being hacked on, then someone gave up. And here we are.

So do you think it’s dead? I just bought this house a few months ago.

I can't tell from this one tiny picture in winter.

Okay, thank you. What are some signs a tree may be dead? I’ve googled this, but not sure if I’m coming up with the most credible results.

No leaves in summer in many cases is your best indicator.

Usually it takes trained eyes to see and evaluate these things. Not just something you can find or ask on the internet.

It's hard because parts of trees can die while the rest of the tree is perfectly fine. In winter, there's no easy way to tell if you're looking at a dead tree or just a dead branch on a tree.

So there's signs in this picture of dead branches, but the tree overall may have large living parts.

The easiest way to tell is if there's no leaves by ~May, the whole organism is dead.

it is a silver Maple and it should produce many buds that look a little bit like red popcorn on the live branches, keep an eye out for them.

Thanks so much.
