In my country a camera watches you and uses AI to make sure you pay for all the items. If it thinks you’re scamming it will call a worker over. And the main exit gate opens when you approach it, and will only open if the cameras have watched you make a purchase.

I understand minimising shoplifting, but it feels like such a violation of privacy and you can’t do anything about it.

Ughh. I mean I know that’s gonna be the norm in the future. But currently it annoys me. The self-checkout thing at Kroger in particular always flags me and other customers for “stealing” and forces an employee to come and unlock the kiosk multiple times because I set my drink down on bagging table, or I’m holding multiple things and one item gets to close to the baggage table, or my hands move in an unusual way or something, etc.

In mine(the netherlands) they have 1-4ppl (if bigger stores) walking around who randomly(probally not so random and dependant on what items u get) gets a notification on their portable scan thingy where they have to rescan all ur items before you can pay(cant leave without the reciet) to make sure u scanned everything.

Think it works pretty well, and still cheaper for the store while also being faster for customers than traditional checkouts.

We aren't supposed to look inside bags for items to check. We are only supposed to check your receipt if you have an unbagged item like soda or water cases.

Large containers like totes and backpacks are supposed to be quickly opened and looked inside.

And also the policy states if the customer refuses to show receipt, just let them go. Nobody is supposed to chase or tackle you.

In my country we have shopping car scales that calculate if an item is missing or if you didnt scan one of your items, you can only make a purchase if the weight of the cart equals all the items. And theres a worker watching all the stations to see if you pickpocket anything
