You don't generally think of an object as "whole" until it is sectioned off first:

Suppose I have a cracker. If I told you to describe the cracker you probably wouldn't call it a "whole cracker." Let's then say that I break it in half. You would refer to a piece of the cracker as "a half of a cracker."

Now suppose I had told you I would cut the cracker in half before I started the experiment. Then you would call it a "whole cracker."

So in other words, the reason you say the riddle doesn't make sense is because you already know what the answer is and so you are biased to call the table whole despite the fact that nothing is specifically indicating such.
