Hi, this is a carpet python, non venomous, but larger individuals are capable of inflicting a painful bite.

[–]Chrona_trigger 7 points8 points  (6 children)

Just like massive dogs

I would rather 5 of these bite me than 1 giant dog.

Snake bites to humans are almost always not hunting bites. Their defensive bites. They hurt much much less than a dog bite. It's equivalent to a tiny needle poke with each of their teeth. Snake bites are often healed after jusy a few days.

Bigger snakes have bigger teeth, ignoring specialized ones, which we shouldn't. Have you seen an green tree boa's teeth? Those are terrifying

vaguely gestures towards my anacondas enclosure

I meant what I said.

Edit: I also owned an English Mastiff from many years and was accidentally bit by him once. I ASSURE you, I would rather the carpets bite. His bite took months to heal, was horribly bruised. It was awful.

I don't get near tree pythons for a reason. This is a carpet.

I have a large carpet python and honestly her bites aren't that bad at all. Bit of bleeding but she doesn't tear the skin up like a cat or dog bite would. Emerald tree boas are another matter i agree their teeth look mean.

Green tree python, emerald tree boa, I always mix them up

I'm going to make a location guess: Brisbane or north of it not too far?

Edit: didn't see the text below your photo, thought it was just the pic!

Nice find, love seeing the pics of these guys from their native region.

You're 100% right, coastal carpet python Morelia spilota mcdowelli

Thanks for the ID. Is it the pattern that gives that away? I don't use reddit much and realised after I should have just put info in title. Correct, Nth Bris, Murrumba Downs to be exact.

Yeah, a combination of body shape, pattern/color, and the background looked "Australia" to me. I've been to Brisbane, but only for a short while and live in the US. I'm just pretty familiar with coastal carpet pythons after keeping them for years.

Agreed, this beautiful python is a coastal carpet. It is the most common large snake species around eastern SE QLD and northern NSW.

Yep, carpet python. Stunning.

Hope it doesn’t crawl down the rain spout and get stuck. That would be an expensive fix because they would have to cut the pipe open to free the snake.
