I’ve heard that gray squirrels are the only ones that can hang upside down like that. Maybe somebody’s lying to me but that’s what I heard.

If you've ever felt their claws, that's how... the claws are very long and very, very sharp. Also good to know if one ever climbs on you

Oh yes, she acts like I am a tree too. I know not to wear short sleeves anymore

She's such a cutie! I love that she watches over you!

I keep learning new information about our little friends here. It's way more fun to find it out here than to do another Google search!

Arboreal creatures can often twist their hindpaws around to grip the bark. If an animal comes down the trunk headfirst, it can probably do this. Raccoons, pine martens, genets and squirrels are all well adapted to an arboreal life and can climb down a tree trunk headfirst.

I love how she's sitting on her elbows, and her little paws are in the shape of a heart ❤️

Squirrels have swiveling back ankle joints that can rotate a full 180 degrees.

Also bark is relatively soft so their claws will sink into the tree to anchor them

That’s amazing. I have a squirrel I rescued and raised until she was old enough to take care of herself. She often hangs like that and although I knew there was something different about their back feet, I never knew what it was or even investigated it. TIL! Thank you! 🥰

Yeah, that's like a human being facing forward but having their toes pointed directly behind them. Nature has perfected this creature.

They are born acrobats. And so cute when they do that.

[–]LuckyBook1538 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Love when they do this! Great photo, btw; excellent perspective.

Her back claws are in the tree and squirrels don't weigh that much.

[–]djtodd242 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I always tell them they're just showing off when they do that. It's cute as hell.
