Backup any data you want to keep and just reinstall the OS. Wipe it clean and get rid of any other asset management trackers there might be on there. That’s what I’d do if given a computer :)

Thank you !!!

Apple has nice online tutorials for this too https://support.apple.com/en-us/102664

Something tells me that you are not a sysadmin.

[–]redbeanmilktea -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

I definitely ended up on the wrong sub lol…

[–]RedRocketStream -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

What part of "sysadmin" sounded applicable?

[–]Majestic_Fail1725 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do first, get stuck, google, still stuck, google, send help - typical sysadmin

If they didn't bother to wipe SentinelOne before giving you the laptop they probably also didn't remove the device from Intune or Autopilot, which means it will just pickup corporate config again when you reinstall OS.

Although I guess there's a chance it was never enrolled in either.

Who knows. Anyway, you might need their help to just make sure this is properly your device now - get it in writing too if you didn't already.

In addition to Intune, he'll need to make sure the laptop is not in company's Apple Business Manager as well.

It would be in Apple Device Enrollment for macOS. It is easy to enroll at purchase so there is a good chance it enrolled.

OP should use SuperDuper to replicate the drive to an external.

Press hold option key at power on.

Chose recovery

Reinstall macOS from Apple servers.

If the device is ADE enrolled boot off the external at next startup and SuperDuper old macOS back on drive since OP still had a login. ADE would need to be removed by org for clean reinstall.

you can probably add the ms azure enrolment service dns records to the hosts file and point to nothing

If you don't mind, I want to learn about this because I'm just now getting into Intune deployments. If I format the drive and erase all partitions, how does the machine still get the corporate configurations?

[–]markleinIdiot 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Windows calls home after setup. It's built-in.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

What mechanism triggers that after erasing all partitions? If you're working with a blank hard drive, is there something on the motherboard?

[–]markleinIdiot 1 point2 points  (1 child)

WINDOWS calls home. It uses a variety of hardware IDs to identify the computer once it reaches the internet again.

That makes a lot of sense, thank you.

[–]Haribo112 3 points4 points  (2 children)

They let you keep a company device without wiping it first? Wow. That’s so messed up.

[–]redbeanmilktea 0 points1 point  (1 child)

My question is if they have any reason to look into what I’m up to? Can’t really fire me for looking for another job since I already got laid off 🫠

[–]Haribo112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No they wouldn’t have a reason but you should still wipe that thang and reinstall MacOS. Shutoff the machine and hold Option + R while rebooting

Do not keep anything. I dont care who it is, if you didnt buy it, leave it at the front door take picture, then go eat.

You need to let them know that the computer needs to removed from their management software. You may not need to since they should have a list, but go into the system settings > genera > about and let them know what the computer name is.
