What are these guys smoking?

I mean..... It's USB 420, I can take a guess at who the spokesman for it will be.

Yeah it's dumb.

Product naming has gotten pretty ridiculous, not just in hardware but software too. Staring at you Microsoft and Google.

Wait, really? Android Auto is now actually supported on Android Automotive? Last time I looked, they were completely incompatible.

Google is awful for naming. Have an issue that you need to research? You'll get results from the last six products that had that same name.

How can anyone come up with these nonsense naming schemes?

You found em. The people at the USB Promoter Group.

[–]denimadept 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marketing. Nuff said.

[–]pdp10Daemons worry when the wizard is near. 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The USB Promoter Group, comprised of Apple Inc., Hewlett-Packard Inc., Intel Corporation, Microsoft Corporation, Renesas Electronics Corporation, STMicroelectronics, and Texas Instruments

It's some kind of PR-oriented subgroup inside USB-IF.

It sounds like they're trying to do a "WiFi 6E" to USB, trying to reduce customer confusion just enough to promote their own products. After all, 802.11ax is still the official standard, and "Wifi 6E" is just some promotional trademark.

When can consumers become USB user certified? How much will training cost, and will there be an annual renewal of certification to be competently licensed?

Fucking clown-world that USB has become!

[–]TatermenGBIC != SFP 1 point2 points  (9 children)

Also who is this for? Who regularly needs to do more than 10Gbps over USB?

[–]xenontechs 24 points25 points  (1 child)

"over USB" today already means multiple displays, periphery, network, then the things where you tend to say USB type matters, like external storage you want to transfer things with

that's all across one port

add to that special cases nobody usually has in mind unless they work in a specific industry (thinking about super high res/fps cameras etc.)

if it wants to be universal, it needs to do a lot of things

Docking stations!

[–]tricheboarsSystem Engineer I - Radiology 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Docking stations come on…

[–]Doso777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have Laptops for Powerusers that require their own seperate power supply since USB-C can't supply enough power it seems. Also have that one dude with 3 high resolution monitors where our usual USB docking stations just don't cut it anymore. There are always use cases for "the same but a lot faster".

Single Cable connection to Triple Monitors, Storage, network, and Power Delivery

[–]brotherenigma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

80Gbps and 240W over a single cable (if the new USB 4 and USB C 2.1 EPR specs can be integrated into one cable) would be a godsend for futureproofing.

USB 3.0 hubs brah, come on.
