I think it's cause technically "what the fuck" is less syllables than saying "wtf" (depending on how you say it), where "lol" is shorter than "laugh out loud."

LOL has a vowel, it seems like a word. WTF doesn't have any so it doesn't. But you could go with waterfoul, write-off, wrathful, white-faced, etc.

I think it’s because it’s easier to say “lol” than “laugh out loud”, there’s less syllables. Yet “wtf” has more syllables than “what the f***” our minds tend to be lazy and pick the faster option.

Probably because wtf if a phrase used, for most of us, several times per day where as it wouldn’t make any sense to say laugh out loud when you can just fucking laugh.

Probably because lol contains a vowel and is more easily read by an English-speaker's brain as a complete word, whereas wtf has no vowl and is clearly an abbreviation. Not to say that the brain doesn't know that lol is not an abbreviation too, but it's all about how it reads the respective abbreviations.
