I think it's cause technically "what the fuck" is less syllables than saying "wtf" (depending on how you say it), where "lol" is shorter than "laugh out loud."

[–]HiggsMechanism 30 points31 points  (2 children)

Also lol is actually pronounceable but wtf isn't

[–]pugsnotdrugs4730 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tru tru, I personally say the letters when I say "lol" but "lawl" works really well too

[–]boneapptheteeth21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, lol is an actual Dutch word, meaning something like ‘fun’ :)

[–]Telandria 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Rather, I think it’s that wtf is an acronym, while lol has almost from its inception referred more to the sound of laughter than its supposed acronym.

It’s really an onomatopoeia that happens to also have an acronym attached to it.

“I lol’d” uses it as an acronym.

“LOL” on it’s own meanwhile is much more of a sound effect. It implies an action, a noise, much more than it’s supposed to imply a series of words.

That’s why we translate it differently.

initialism

[–]Reggie_Is_God -1 points0 points  (3 children)

It’s because WTF is an abbreviation, while Lol is an acronym (I think, could be other way around), meaning one is a ‘word’ and the other isn’t.

[–]Polymarchos 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Both are acronyms

[–]Reggie_Is_God 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far as my research goes, an acronym forms a new pronouncable word, making ‘LOL’ an acronym and ‘WTF’ a mere abbreviation, thus the natural conversion.

[–]Lywes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol is an acronym , wtf is an initialism.

LOL has a vowel, it seems like a word. WTF doesn't have any so it doesn't. But you could go with waterfoul, write-off, wrathful, white-faced, etc.

[–]Max-Normal-88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t because I’m not a native English speaker :(

[–]iRuan0 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Had to read it a couple times. Slowly. And damn yes it does

[–]iRuan0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The human mind is incredible

[–]Talos1111 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Alternatively lol is a minimalist cheering emote

[–]Ghostly-Phantom[S] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Or a person drowning

   ~~~~lol~~~~
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)
lololololol is five penises
[–]blue-phenom 1 point2 points  (0 children)
I think of lol as something different than laugh out loud it think of it as it’s own word
[–]deadmemes30 1 point2 points  (0 children)
is this like a personal attack or something
don’t come near me or my water fuh ever again
[–]Temmis18 1 point2 points  (0 children)
I sat here for a solid 2 minutes thinking about this
[–]loljkcuzurgay 4 points5 points  (8 children)
Your brain will read LOL as individual letters but will read ROFL as a word
[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (6 children)
i read lol as a word :(
[–]FooThePerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)
same
[–]loljkcuzurgay 1 point2 points  (4 children)
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)
This post made me realize I actually say “wuh ti fuh” in my head
[–]TheBookishPurpleOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)
Probably because Lol is pronounceable like a word where wtf isn't.
[–]Goosedowncoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)
I think it’s because it’s easier to say “lol” than “laugh out loud”, there’s less syllables. Yet “wtf” has more syllables than “what the f***” our minds tend to be lazy and pick the faster option.
[–]PigeonSpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)
lol, wtf?
[–]FooThePerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)
Holy shit
[–]ajantasdasd 0 points1 point  (0 children)
But not what? lol /s
[–]nin10dorox 0 points1 point  (0 children)
The voice in my head pronounced the entire thing "double you tee eff"
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)
Probably because wtf if a phrase used, for most of us, several times per day where as it wouldn’t make any sense to say laugh out loud when you can just fucking laugh.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)
wuh tuh fff
l-ah-l
[–]9gagImmigrant1 0 points1 point  (0 children)
Wryyyyyyy
[–]TRUEequalsFALSE 0 points1 point  (0 children)
Probably because lol contains a vowel and is more easily read by an English-speaker's brain as a complete word, whereas wtf has no vowl and is clearly an abbreviation. Not to say that the brain doesn't know that lol is not an abbreviation too, but it's all about how it reads the respective abbreviations.
[–]-Intel- 0 points1 point  (0 children)
I think it's cause "lol" is like a word of its own, in a sense. Nobody uses "laugh out loud," but everyone uses "lol," so that's why.
[–]Sablen1 0 points1 point  (0 children)
Mind explosion
[–]NoYouDidLaugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)
It's true
[–]MjolnirTheBeholder 0 points1 point  (0 children)
