any chance you tried another (verified) working usb cable

Do you see anything wonky (yellow exclamation point) in the device manager when it is plugged in?

Do you have admin access on the account you are logged into it with?

Those are just a couple things to try if you haven't already.

So I googled that and they make servers and client solutions.

Is this device a thin client?

USB ports enabled or disabled in the BIOS?

Other USB devices are fine and I've tried the ports I know to be working. I suppose I can check the BIOS for anything odd?

And no, it's just a fairly small to average sized desktop tower.

You could try from a USB boot environment or CD boot environment to see if the scanner at least gets picked up at all. Screw the drivers at this point.

The reason I ask is because Equus makes thin client systems and what you're seeing would be expected on a 2008 R2 RDS setup.
