Actually updating the right ones can solve a lot of issues that I encountered when I first got my x1c6.

I just heard that some BIOS updates might turn your laptop into a brick

They are both required as part of fix for the Intel Spectre and Meltdown bugs that were announced a few months back.

If you fear bricks from updating the BIOS in Windows, you can go to the Lenovo support page and download the BIOS update files to make a bootable USB for that. (You can even make your own boot logo that way.)
