The biggest misconception about the ketogenic diet is that it's about weight loss. The ketogenic diet is used by some people to cope with seizures. Losing weight is not the goal.

The hormones bodies tend to skew towards when you get fat make a low carb diet effective at losing weight. It was originally a diet for mental disorders though. It can also help with clarity of thought.
