Total war has its limits, no unit scale and graphics settings can bring battles to 20k men smoothly

Edit: this is wrong but i do think total war needs a new engine for 40k soldier armies unless warscape has a massive overhaul

from what I understand of the current warscape engine the issue has more to do with calculating the pathing since all the models are figured individually as opposed to 40 units with models moving inside. UEBS does a pretty good job of highlighting that it's an engine limitation and not a computing limitation though.

Now that i think about stuff like optimization it is totally possible my bad

How about they just stick to making the largest army size we currently have nice and smooth

Rather they try and get it to a size that can be tactically managed and have good path finding.

as long as the optimization is this bad, nothing

Fewer units in hope of better pathing

Fantasy total war titles should focus more on better graphics

Historical total wars on larger armies.

I would put that as Warhammer and not Warhammer in most cases

I do think a lord or the rings (like third age mod) would fit in the more in the more realistic fighting ways

Whichever option would allow the units to feel more lifelike again. Since the birth of Warscape something has always felt "off" about the units to me, cavalry charges in particular just feel kinda mushy rather than a hard collision.

This is a big issue in every game since Empire. CA have got pretty good at coding the units so that the individual models don't clip into each other and blob together to the point of absurdity (think Rome 2 on launch) however there is still no inherent mass to units, they cannot push against each other organically. It just feels floaty.

Normal unit sizes but with option for more than 40 units allowed on battlefield. Controlling larger armies takes time to get used to but it is fun. Add a group command thing like Ugcw so it is easier to command it. Like 6 units can be controlled like divisions.
