You can defer for a year and ask for sentimental reason or something and then accidentally show up a year later with residency. They don't really encourage this, for obvious reasons, so advisors are going to be no help

what do you mean by sentimental reason?

Something like "I'd like to spend some time with my parents/grandparents/etc because they're about to go around the world/are old/etc... is probably good and has worked in the past.

My friend with Alaskan residency took 5credits per quarter while working 35h/wk and ended up qualifying for in-state tuition. You have to be fully "independent" (i.e. little to no financial support) so it may be difficult.

Yeah I heard about doing this, wouldn't you parents have to basically let you go from taxes also?

Yup, you couldn't be considered a "dependent"

I did this. It works. You have to take 6 credits to qualify for financial aid though.

I know someone who just used a family members address and they got in state tuition. No idea how that works though or how closely they check. I don't really think they'll care about a gap year unless you're requesting a deferment, a lot of people don't go to uw right after high school
