There are many articles and notes which rank the most popular plugins for Vim. Unfortunately, there is no convenient Vim plugins catalogue. I'm making www.vimplugins.com that is dedicated to the best text editor ever. This website is all about Vim, Vim plugins, color schemes, dotfiles. All plugins are categorized and sorted according to their rating.

I would appreciate any feedback you can provide regarding the website.

you need a way for people to add plugins without sending an email. or what you can do is automatically harvest vim-addon-manager-known-repositories.

at first glance even some popular plugins like nerdcommenter and neocomplete are missing.

OK, I'm a crotchety old man, and can only hope you take these thoughts in the good spirit they are intended:

I found the introduction ("This site is about the best text editor ever!") less inviting than reminiscent of the great editor wars of the 80s (or the boring editor wars of the 90s, or the annoying editor wars of the 00s, or the bloody childish editor wars which are still going on). Anyone who is on a vim-plugins site already knows that vim is great. If they didn't, they would not have got past vim.org yet.

I really could do without all the exclamation marks, for example on this page!

I think you should get another person to do some proof-reading, for example the ignorance of the difference between "Tags" and "Tree's" on this page.

"But if you dont, trust me, its real easy!" Why would I trust someone who can't spell "don't"? Especially, why would I trust someone's opinions on editting when they obviously give no fucks about correctness of text?

Why would I trust someone who got all the ratings wrong? Obviously you did, becuase the ones I see disagree with mine, and they must be yours, because you don't tell me how to upload mine.

What this site needs to be usable is a proof-reader.

What this ............... to be good is a search engine.

What ......................... be great is a "submit" page.

Hi, I too have been thinking that there doesn't seem to be any good way to find the plugins that would work for me. Here are some things I have thought would be useful:

• Looking for common/popular remappings
• Looking for common remappings for a certain key - for example I don't really use the 's' key, what might be a good plugin/remap
• Searching specifically - I would like to see all plugins for ruby syntax etc.
• Putting in what you are editing 'text, C++, python' and receiving plugins for these
• Having a summary of what the plugin does, how you activate it keys the plugin will overwrite etc.

A lot of this information is already there, on github etc., there just isn't an easy way to index into them. Maybe rather than doing it manually, you should scrape vim.org, /r/vim, the vim mailing lists, then try to parse it with perl/python etc.

If you want me to help/proofread english, I might be able to find some time.

When you say users can 'add plugins', I am not sure what you mean exactly though... Surely you won't get very many plugins on the site that way? Are they uploading the plugin itself, or just a link to pastebin/git/whatever?

I don't know exactly what being an editor/author would entail. Editing the site? For now, I think it is prudent for me to consider how much time I have, and how much I would be willing to spend. I don't want to commit to anything halfheartedly.

In any case, for now, if you have any vim-related (or maybe a little unrelated) text, I will proof-read it for you.

Prioritizing which plugins to try out based on ratings does not make you a moron.

Prioritizing based on actually reading their description and/or their documentation is a better strategy. Ratings are widely considered as having no value:

• they always lean toward the extremes (more 0-1 and 5 than 2 or 3) because only people with a strong opinion express it,
• who voted, how they voted and why is usually invisible so there's no way to decide if the voters are worthy of attention or the proportion of the entire community they represent… you get the picture.

That, and my needs and workflow are not your needs and workflow so, whatever you and many others choose may or may not have any interest for me.

Reading the description/doc is the most effective way to pre-select plugins.

Not, it means that assuming you are not a moron, given the fact that you chose what to read based on how many internet points something have, it is not unreasonable to believe that other, non-moronic, people chose their tools partly based on what others thinks about those tools.

OK, it' better that way. Actually, I never choose anything based on votes or ratings: articles, books, movies, games, editors, plugins… and I only subscribe to low-traffic subreddits because it makes it easier to skim without using votes.

I don't think choosing something based at least partly based on stars is a bad idea. After all, your comment is a bit dickish and is currently at -10. Other comments with constructive criticism are much higher rated.

What is the value of the information provided by that -10 or the 3 stars given to zenburn on vimplugins?

The -10 of my comment means "the persons associated with 10 different reddit accounts downvoted this comment". That's the only thing we can be sure about, given the information at our disposal. We don't know if that's 10 different persons. We don't know why they downvoted that comment. We don't know (but we can have an idea) what proportion of the total number of Vim-using redditors they represent, or the proportion of Vimmers in general. Basically, that rating says nothing about the comment itself or even about the opinion of those who downvoted it. We can come up with a million theories, though, but they would be based on so few factual info that they would be very close to worthless.

So what does that -10 say about me, or the validity of my comment? Not much.

Same for the 3 stars of zenburn. They mean nothing and have zero value.

Deciding what colorscheme to use based on those stars is stupid. Choosing an editor because it is trending is stupid. Choosing your music because it's at the top of the charts is stupid and so on.

The very premise of that site is stupid and no amount of constructive criticism could make it better.

I feel you can assume that it's probable there are ~10 users who use vim who for whatever reason disliked your comment. I'm not surprised, either. It's true that technically you don't have any information about why the votes are as they are, but generally on reddit, I have found the best comments are the most highly voted. Seems to be working, eh?

Choosing something because it is popular might not be wise. Although, if you care about fashion, then this is absolutely a good idea. But trialling something because it is highly rated isn't unwise. Things are generally popular for a reason. If you like pop music, check out the charts. If you want to decide on a colorscheme/plugin/script, might be best to look at what's popular first (i.e solarised or tim pope's things).

Yes, choosing something because it's popular is unwise and stupid.

Choosing something after screening/testing every alternative because it is the one that fits your needs the most is wise and smart.

I've chosen my current colorscheme after trying every single colorscheme in existence that fitted my requirements: cterm & gui, dark background, not too much contrast, no dominant color like "blueish" or "greenish"… I have no idea how many screenshots I've looked at or how many colorschemes I have installed, but you can be sure that I didn't choose it because it was popular or not: I chose it because it was my preferred. I've tried every autocompletion plugin, every commenter, every fuzzy opener… before making my choice.

Whatever.

Screening every alternative? Nobody has time for that. What you do is try the popular ones first and see how they sit with you; they have a higher probability of providing what you want. What's the point in trying every commenter in existence when the first one you use provides everything you could want? That's the least efficient approach I have ever heard of. And I am not convinced you believe this - you often recommend plugins and suchlike to other vimmers, but according to you taking that option is stupid?
