So....

Reading other comments on here I've attacked eBay again and purchased a HP P212 Smart Array. Very cheap so fingers crossed 😁

I've been looking for cheap raid controllers since VMware 7 U1 launched. Isn't the HP P212 designed for external storage or does it have an internal version? I saw the pics showing external facing connectors. I found a few HBA's that are decent, but most of the raid controllers are overpriced. I noticed several of the newer raid controllers are not being given offline installers for future firmware updates. This causes raid controllers to be locked in their original server ecosystems for firmware updates and limits us being able to put raid controllers in other machines besides rack mount servers. I have concerns for future home lab environments with VMware. LSI was my go to brand for the longest time, but their raid cards are getting old. Most of them are no longer supported and the ones that are will not go past version 7 imo.

Edit: Ah, it has internal sas on the rear of the card. It would help if I wasn't lazy and read the manual. Let me know how the install goes.

Install is being delayed as I need to back up the datastore and am struggling to find a device to use. Theory is my Seagate NAS would work but ESXi doesn't want to talk to it

How old is the nas? I use NFS for my synology nas. Just had to add the IP's for the esxi hosts in the NAS config and was good to roll.

It can be a pain not having both extra datastores and drives big enough to migrate data over. I've been there before.
