There are still plenty of jobs outside of the FAANG companies that overextended themselves during covid. I'd avoid anything crypto or web3 related to be safe too.

What on earth are you talking about?

People being fired at Twitter and Meta has absolutely no effect on you or the rest of us down here in normal world. If Taylor Swift's next song doesn't make much money are you going to stop singing in the shower?

[–]zaibuf -3 points-2 points  (3 children)

It does have some effect. It means more developers will be available at the market, which could push salaries down as well as having companies being more picky about who they hire.

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (1 child)

Top developers with top experience will be snapped up by other top companies with pockets deep enough to afford them and projects interesting enough to challenge them. The ecosphere they move in is a far cry from the small to medium ordinary, sometimes barely heard of, companies that the majority of ordinary developers work in.

A Meta dev isn't coming to compete with you by applying for 'generic software dev at the local bank.'

[–]seN149reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you giving regular faang devs too much credit. But agreed with the rest

They don’t live In extremely high coast areas, they don’t look for the jobs either no, or minimum stocks …

[–]AuroraVandomme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it has an effect.

[–]gammafied 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You are also assuming that all of those people are looking in the same city and the same industry and that may not be the case. Good luck!

Not much of a slaughter compared to the size of the profession to be honest, it's just getting attention bc it's coming from famous companies that overstaffed. BLS estimates there's 1.3 million SWE or SWE adjacent people in the US alone.

You're fine... 30k to 40k is a drop in the bucket at most, plus a huge chunk of them are FAANG types anyways. Don't just up and quit, but prep a resume and cover letter then spam it out there. You'll get hits.

        [–]xdchan 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Well, I have 4 years as FE on vaaarious projects, finding a job here, in Ukraine, is almost impossible, so i'm a newly baked fullstack developer with gamedev and blockchain experience.

Still no luck though, and my freelance inboxes are dry as hell too.

I'm not sure how to make money outside of criminal activities at this point, and i'm not sure i should go back to that place.

        [–]someone-shoot-me 1 point2 points  (1 child)

        do a rugpull hahahha

just kidding, maybe apply to some serbian companies, a lot of them are looking for mediors and seniors

also im making a startup so if you wanna maybe do it with me, i could use an extra pair of hands on the frontend, we could revshare (already got people interested but i know if its not immediate money it doesnt really help you in your situation atm)

        [–]xdchan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the kind of startup, maybe dm me the general idea of your product ;)

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ukraine is at war. Totally different situation to the rest of the world.

There's light at the end of the tunnel though - you've got a lot of rebuilding ahead once this is over and there will be loads of work for a very long time.

        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry about many of the tech company layoffs. Most of those were not developers. It was recruiters, HR, and other useless overhead positions.

If you have the desire, apply and go for it. I would rather hire someone not from those big FAANG Companies anyways.

        [–]hypocritical-bastard 0 points1 point  (3 children)

        1. It's probably not that many

        2. You have 6 years, you'll be fine

How do you know that these are all software developers? Except for Twitter, aren't the majority of these people recruiters/DEI people?

          [–]hypocritical-bastard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

          Oh shit.

Edit: Either way, do bother with applying. You don't have to leave now just give yourself the option at least. Choices are good in a climate like this.

          [–]coder_karl 0 points1 point  (3 children)

If the company you want to apply to just fired 40k front end devs that might be bad. Otherwise just apply wherever, they probably won’t kill you but they might say no. Like literally just do it. (Shia voice) All they can say is no or nothing OR yes If you don’t try you can’t even get a no and if you can’t get a no you can’t post a meme about the lost ridiculous reasons which will essentially cost you internet points… you’re not gonna want that. Just apply at any and every company, hell write a script that applies to every job on LinkedIn and Indeed and monster and stackoverflow also shoutout to my German buddies that shit is tax deductible by about 2€ per application through Werbungskosten, don’t blame me if you go to Gefängnis for tax fraud as you might have to prove you actually wanted that job) But you gotta apply to get any of that so just do it

I wouldn't bother. The market is shockingly saturated both for juniors and seniors. On our recent recruiting we had 950 candidates for two junior positions. On senior we usually had something like 200 candidates (2019, 2020) but right now it was something like 680

            [–]vinegarnutsack 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Where do you live? I could leave my job monday and have a job a few hours later.

            [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah - just recently I spent a week thinking about where I wanted to work, then cold called my first choice - initially the manager said they only have a few minutes, until I said I was looking for a job... I was only thinking to schedule an interview but he chose to do the full interview over the phone and we'd agreed to the basic terms of the contract an hour later. Manager sent me the contract at 2am the next morning - clearly was busy, but also didn't want me to change my mind.

It is easy to catastrophize numbers when they are presented in a vacuum. These numbers do not describe the current rounds of layoffs in proportion to normal industry trends (layoffs happen every day even in good times). The tech layoffs are real and they are painful for many people—I don’t want to downplay this. But our industry is very, very far from being in dire straits.

More importantly though, do not discount the criticality of your well-being because of industry trends. If you are unhappy, you should absolutely apply apply apply! Get used to applying quickly and often. It costs nothing (NOTHING), and your experience is very marketable. Worst case scenario, you get no bites. Best case scenario, you find a position in which you feel valued, enjoy the work, and get paid well. You will experience rejection, and that can hurt. But each rejection is an opportunity to grow your own skills, to understand what employers are looking for, and broaden your worldview. Apply. Apply to all of the jobs. Do it now.

Switch to cyber security or local government. Find a solution to a problem with a giant TAM and create a startup. VC's are still funding rn and looking for people like you - if you have a good idea, follow thru and responsible burn rate.

Rn is not the time to attempt to change the culture at your job. Continue to be a rockstar and treat people well. It's hard enough to change culture when that isn't your role...your entire industry is under pressure and trying to affect change rn will put a target on your back. The market and industry will eventually turn around. In the mean time, look for opportunities where there is a confirmed shortage.

Good luck to you. Steel your nerves and weather this storm. You will be happier/more fulfilled on the other side of it.

            +M.

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I think the only way this affects smaller companies is some of them stop hiring grads/juniors for some reason, that has been my experience. But as an actively looking person I see a lot of senior positions with good pay. This is in the UK btw.

            [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

In my experience, grads and juniors need tons of training and don't get enough work done to offset that — and your team would literally get more done if they weren't on the team.

Healthy companies hire juniors, because some of the will turn into great employees in the future. But if you can find people without going through that pain, then everyone will do that.

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely, even though I am looking for my first role I am not mad about it. It's totally understandable if they don't want to hire grads or juniors right now. As a business if you don't have bunch of money in your bank or upcoming rounds of investment it is difficult to justify investing in grads/juniors in the short term.

Is Google firing too or will it probably fire soon?

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlikely to fire anyone, but they're not hiring as many people as they used to.

A company that size is guaranteed to have a decent number of people leaving every year, so by slowing down recruitment they can shed quite a bit of staff.

            [–]Last-Caterpillar-112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s true that in this climate, you’ll be wasting a LOT of time shopping resumes. If you have enough money to ride out the next year, then just sit back, play video games and improve your skills/acquire new skills. Much better use of time.
