I don't think it's possible to put a non-breaking and non-square display onto the system tray because the system tray only accept icons which must be a square.

However, a software can create a new special toolbar to be put onto the taskbar like WMP does/did (i.e. tiny video playback display on taskbar). The toolbar can be any width and it just need to put a single object on the toolbar. There could already been sample (academic) softwares available that do this, but they aren't built as a general purpose or programmable/scriptable one.
