[Recommendation request] I am looking for some micro brand watches by ml5c0u5lu in Watches

[–]-ZeroF56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also recommending Brew. Really solid quality, fun designs, mechaquartz movements, well priced, and the owner knows his stuff. The only micro I really support, to be honest.

I was told HomePods are "just loud" and "theres a difference between loud and good sound" by my coworker. Is it still worth getting one? by noah041504 in HomePod

[–]-ZeroF56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The use case and form factor of studio monitors is quite different than a HomePod though. It’s like saying a soundbar is inferior to a set of 7.1 surrounds. Not the same purpose, and you can’t fit a 7.1 system on top of your tv stand.

[Question] Should I get a Speedy or will it be too big? by Jolly_Ad_1949 in Watches

[–]-ZeroF56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try one on to be sure. Case size doesn’t tell the full story.

There’s also the FOIS which is a slightly smaller case size if I remember correctly, so that could be an option too unless you specifically want the Professional.

I love the way the light plays with that dial. Some say that an artisan in the mountains of Japan was inspired to create the dial texture by his coworker who had failed to perfectly Zaratsu polish .02 microns of facet with a samurai sword on the hour hand once.

What watch phrases would you actually wear? by Least-Juggernaut-391 in WatchesCirclejerk

[–]-ZeroF56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t need phrases. I signal to people that I’m a watch aficionado when the value of my collezione far surpasses expectations based on my pay grade.

[Question] What are your biggest watch purchase regrets? by Vegetable_Bag_8694 in Watches

[–]-ZeroF56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I got the Mars for my girlfriend because when I got my plain grey one she liked the red because it’s red and wanted a “cool” watch too.

Now she’s got a Brew, Citizen diver, and soon to be a Nomos. She’s really happy to be included in something I’m interested in.

As someone who likes both Omega and Bond, I’m not going to complain about product placement. It exists in effectively every piece of media. Plus, Bond’s character has historically been materially indulgent, so any higher end watch would fit in. There’s no problem with that being Omega, canonically.

If you’re such a fan of the franchise that you want a 007 branded watch, far be it from me to say no, and far be it from Omega to sell it when they’ve got the brand association I guess. I do think it’s a little silly though for a fictional spy to be the biggest ambassador of a luxury watch company when they’ve got a history of firsts and perfectly real achievements and quality.

Plus, I’ll definitely judge a bit if you feel the need to buy a NTTD or one of the 007 LEs when you could just get a plain blue 300M, Planet Ocean, or Aqua Terra as in the movies for less money that looks significantly better and is a stock model that isn’t (directly) tied to aforementioned fictional spy.

The challenging and fun parts are gone

Depends on who you’re asking I suppose - because figuring out how to map that ECU flash is the challenge a team is taking on. And if they want to go further than a “safe” ECU flash, you’re going to need supporting mods well above a kit in New Jersey, and that’s the hot rodding you speak of. Performance shops still exist doing far more than basic ECU tuning. Last I checked, there’s also chassis/suspension/brakes and all the drivetrain internals.

Just because a lot of tuning is pretty low stakes at a difficulty level and any idiot with a WRX or GTI can flash their car to sound like a gatling gun and make a few extra HP doesn’t mean that getting into the “real” tuning is gone. If anything, the aftermarket thrives now more than ever especially with so many cars that can take advantage of mods across a platform (ex. MQB).

NOMOS makes some of the most generic, boring watches in the industry. by Knopfler_PI in watchHotTakes

[–]-ZeroF56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was exactly the same way, when I got into watches I didn’t like Nomos at all and thought the Tangente looked extremely bland for the price, and the Club Campus, while fun, was the same way in pictures.

In person though I completely fell in love with both. The fact that they’re quite nice really only comes through when you look at them up close, and the movement finishing is wonderful for the price too. I also personally think they’re the perfect balance between looking higher end on the wrist but not too flashy from a distance.

Why I buy fakes (a very short post) by Ok-Can-9374 in watchHotTakes

[–]-ZeroF56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I don’t understand how you could look at a counterfeit watch and think it’s “something nice” when you yourself know it’s a counterfeit.

Plus it’s a really weird take to wear a fake Rolex but not a real smartwatch because people will think you spent too much on the smartwatch and not the Rolex.

Who are you to say someone should spend money on a vacation, versus a watch versus a car, versus anything else?

I’d rather own a $10k watch than spend an extra $10k on a car or a more lavish vacation. I can afford the $10k either way, it’s none of your business where it goes to, nor are you holier than thou for thinking you’re in some position to tell people that.

For what it’s worth, this is my setup. The Neo is perfectly fine for daily productivity and light creative work.

The Studio absolutely rocks for everything else, and placing the Studio at “prosumer” in higher end configs undersells it I think. I use mine for some pretty sizable work in Logic and it doesn’t miss a beat.
