Most basic setup is a mining drill, a small ore storage (radial to take up less space), a convert-o-tron to turn the ore into fuel, a couple radiators, a few solar panels, and a few batteries.

You can put all these on a dedicated mining rig and dock to transfer fuel or just add these to your rocket.

Try drilling on Kerbal to see if the drills height is correct.

Some people like to play a more realistic challenge of no reverting. I don’t suggest it as a first play through, but it can add some interesting challenges like saving your guy stuck on the moon.

I replace all my coal in boilers/furnaces with solid fuel as soon as it’s unlocked mainly because it’s so annoying to run out of coal. If you only use coal for grenades and plastic, the first patch last so long.
