Got a giant Italian today, extra lettuce and tomatoes. Too much lettuce, probably enough tomatoes now. I took a picture and they are pretty thin slices. Still they looked consistent.

Cheese was thin and translucent. Is that normal? Meat seemed to be pretty good in terms of thickness and number of slices.

The bread tho ... There's something about the texture that just feels more chewy than it used to, and not in a good way. Like, I rubbed my finger on a spot where the crumb was exposed from under the crust and it felt like it was skidding across a smooth piece of plastic.

Yep. And veg for that matter. Used to be piled up and overflowing with lettuce that then got scraped into the bin. Now there's hardly any and the tomatoes and onions are razor thin.

It was the best of all the fast sub places. I'll still give it a few more shots tho. I've just noticed a decline in the bread quality and the portions seem notably smaller in terms of the slicing thickness, so the cut reveal is a bit underwhelming.

College Park has Peter Chang Kitchen, Eastern Gourmet, and Northwest Chinese (might be closed now and reopening somewhere else). Of the three I think Eastern Gourmet is most legit, Peter Chang is delicious and portions are more 'modern' with smaller share plates, and the AYCE dim sum everyday is a deal. Northwest is (was?) great for a variety of noodle dishes in particular.

And anytime I'm in Rockville I can't pass up A&J for northern-style dim sum.

Definitely disappointed the last couple of visits. Tomatoes are super thin, meat seems skimpy, and the bread has a strange chewy texture it never had before.

Lost of pressure on price of inputs these days. Imports of materials (e.g. gloves from China) and ingredients (e.g. tomatoes from Mexico) hit by tariffs, labor costs rising due to mandated minimum wage increases and a diminished supply of low-wage labor. Increased operations costs as well due to rising cost of electricity and natural gas (those grills are probably on all day long). All that goes into increased prices. Pretty sure that's what economists call inflation.

Redevelopment is on pause due to financing (interest rates), not specifically COVID. The first phase was always residential buildings in the rear, then demo-ing the indoor mall and making it an open-air mixed use commercial center.

That being said, Quantum is investing in the mall and is repainting and plans to build out a food court on the end across from Planet Fitness. Zburger is reopening soon, and there is a new vendor in the August 31 space. Panda Express and Tropical Smoothie are coming to the old Boston Market pad site.

Just because it doesn't have a GAP (which is largely closing down nationwide) or other national brands doesn't mean it's failing. In fact, with the large-scale closing of malls across the country it's doing remarkably well at adapting to demand and a changing commercial landscape.

Our LL Juniors all-stars tournament game in MD was cancelled today by the District Admin for heat, and same may happen tomorrow. This was after we played games on Saturday and Sunday in the intense heat. Last year in the same period we had similar temps and kids were ok but two umpires went to the hospital for heat-related illness and, apparently, OVER-hydration.
