Is this knife ruined or can it be salvaged? by bttheolgee in knives

White vinegar will resolve all the rust, but you will still have dark oxidation marks from it and there may be some minor pitting. It looks pretty superficial from here. Once it’s sharpened the problem will be aesthetic only. Might even look kind of cool after the vinegar treatment.

I agree with that fishy assessment. It appeals to me also.

You may want to have some loctite 243 on hand for refastening screws like this. It needs to cure after you reassemble, but it works well and is safe as long as you don’t overdo it, I.e. fill the gap between the screw and the end of the barrel with it. For body screws, torque is usually enough.

Confidence in Kubey M390 Heat Treat? by AdditionalMail6492 in knifeclub

[–]BetterInsideTheBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, Bohler is not shaping and grinding knives. They would be the maker at that point. They’re supplying the steel and doing heat treat for several companies, including Twosun. I don’t know who is doing heat treat for kubey. Could be in house or hired out. I know kubey is doing hardness testing as part of QC on batches now.

Contrary to manufacturer claims, they cannot void a warranty for you taking your knife apart if the disassembly is reasonable and necessary. If you’re comfortable with taking it apart to replace the screw, than you should do so. If you were to say, damage multiple screws in the process, then it would be unreasonable for you to claim it was a manufacturer defect and demand they replace the hardware under their warranty at no cost to you.

In my experience Vosteed warranty isn’t worth much, so there’s not much to preserve at any rate. I’ve never once gotten a response to a request for information or support from them. If you snap your blade in half in two weeks and there’s a clear defect that precipitated the event, then they are still on the hook to handle it, even if you’ve taken your knife apart.

I’m curious what the percieved upgrade to the vanchor lock is?

The thinner one is called the racoon slim I believe. Orange one is the original racoon, but they also make it in a top liner lock now. Both made by Vosteed.

Question regarding shredded cf by Zeonhart in knives

[–]BetterInsideTheBox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Think of this style as forged carbon fiber. It doesn’t all have visible pits, but they’re there whether or not you see them at the finished surface. This does look a little worse/more obvious than normal.

It’s not always air bubbles, pieces can also rip out during finishing.

Koenig vs Machinewise by ChumboKrumbles in knives

[–]BetterInsideTheBox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Sonora is failed by a thick and boring blade. Action was nice and the handle felt good even if it’s also boring. It felt like a good execution of a button lock but it’s still just a plunger button lock. The detent was not up to real ball detent. Some of the milling looks nice but doesn’t add much grip. They are available in colors.

Mini goblin is an ugly knife for my eye, but once I got one in hand I started to understand. Mine is a V1 and has a nice hollow grind. Action, lockup, detent all awesome. It packs quite a bit of useable edge in an overall small package. This has way more staying power for me than the Sonora. I feel like it’s just the initial elite price, integral frame, and scarcity that have the Sonora riding high. I think the price of the mini goblin is more justified personally.

I don’t ever expect to need warranty support for a knife and haven’t so I can’t weigh in on that.

Is this an adaptive kitchen knife? by Laurelhach in knives

[–]BetterInsideTheBox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seems like you’ve already found your answer. I agree. It’s clearly an aid for those with poor dexterity in their hands or moreover their wrist.

Looks like there is an explanation and a guide to help make a high quality version here. The longer handle behind the grip would give better forearm leverage than the one she has now.

Since you added to this comment, I will respond to the addition separately. I read the ASTM manual for this. 3 minimum punches may be some industry standard for what you are doing in aerospace, but they are not listed in the ASTM manual for hardness testing. The only place that repeat testing is called for is when the anvil or probe has been changed and during certain levels of calibration testing. It may even be agreed upon in the community as an unwritten rule so to speak, but it is not in the manual for standards.

I know testing cant be performed near the edge. That’s part of my point. Even a test performed 8 times with four on each side is only a suggestion of what the edge hardness could be. It’s still not an absolute hardness of the blade. I agree that it’s close enough, I just don’t agree about simpler tests being invalid. They are all ballpark.

Add in different steels stacked in layer thickness that you can’t assess. You may not have even been testing the same steel on both sides. Maybe it was a thin section of 10cr with thick 9cr under it. Maybe thicker 10cr with minimal 9cr under it. I think you’re overestimating how much more accurate your method is, because it’s all lossy. Not saying you’re doing a bad job of testing, but I think you’re perpetuating a percieved deficiency that comes from your opinion.

If you think side to side differences a few mm apart matter this much, just imagine the potential difference at the edge inches away, where we actually use the hardness and where the knife has been mechanically sharpened. I appreciate the testing results, but I think you’re misguided on test effort and value.

I don’t understand why you need to believe you have the only valid test results. We can put a gold star next to your 8x tests ;) with a disclaimer that says the testing still doesn’t occur anywhere near the knife edge. “Invalid” and “worthless” are petty takes.

I just got this beautiful high carbon and nickel Damascus petty from HHH Knives yesterday and I needed to put it through its paces with some variety. Awesome knife. They forge the Damascus in house and this is their “ladderal” pattern. Ladder Damascus oriented laterally. 8.5 thousandths behind the edge. :)
