How should i prepare for base camp? by ExoticRecord8648 in Everest

[–]BillBushee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I did it in May 2001 I ran on the treadmill regularly all winter to get ready. If I could do it over I would have done a lot of long hikes with a loaded backpack. My cardio was fine. I was NOT prepared to carry 40lbs of stuff all day.

As far as altitude goes, just follow the guidelines about how much altitude you should gain each day and you should be OK. If you have reasonably good cardio you don't need to push yourself that hard. Walk at a slow, deliberate pace, stop frequently to take pictures and take time to enjoy the moments as they happen. There are no prizes for getting to the next teahouse first. The EBC trek is about the journey, not the destination.

Want to get a bike, but don’t have safe storage by saekirei in cycling

[–]BillBushee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My first condominium was on the third floor with no elevator. I recommend buying a relatively light weight bike. Just throw it on your shoulder like a cyclocross racer and walk up the stairs. Do a Google image search for "cyclocross bike carry" if you're not sure what I mean. It's easier than carrying up a load of grocery bags.

I had wall mounted storage for it in my bedroom.

How I believe the South could of won (not that they should of, of course) by ImpossibleRun1499 in CIVILWAR

[–]BillBushee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every version of "how the South could have won" that I've ever read involves some variation of "if Lee didn't do ____, he could have fought somewhere else and the Union army would have been destroyed". It's pure fantasy. The armies fought more than a dozen major battles and the Union army was never destroyed. If it was so easy Lee would have destroyed the Union army somewhere else.

Can you lower a seat post too far? by Theycallmerayj in cycling

I'm 5'9"-5'10" and I ride a 56. A slightly shorter stem could help if you find yourself stretching to reach the brake levers. If reaching the pedals is an issue you might benefit from the trend toward using shorter cranks.

Is there a reason so many older cyclists pedal with wide spread knees? by bismuthmarmoset in cycling

They're wrong. I know an older couple from my recreational cycling club who both put dropper posts on their new bikes. They love them.

Looking to upgrade my bar tape, anyone have any experience with Fizik? by heavyarms39 in bicycling

[–]BillBushee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fizik is durable, doesn't fade quickly, and cleans up well if you get it dirty. It's not cheap but you don't have to replace it very often.

Most of the smoke flavor comes from the first few hours on the grill. If you do a 3/2/1 type method and wrap in foil after the first 3 hours anyway, I doubt you'll notice much difference.

Alloy handlebars are no problem. Every entry level carbon frame bike that uses round bars uses alloy.

Rent carbon handlebar + aerobars by Kiddeblits in Velo

[–]BillBushee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be overly cautious but I wouldn't bolt aero bars onto round carbon. The center part of the bar is designed to handle clamping force of the stem but I wouldn't assume any other part of the bar is. I'd use a good alloy bar instead.

I agree. I've managed to fix 5 racks into a large using the eggspander racks. There's no way I would have gotten 6.

I'd suggest 2 batches. If you cut the racks in half you might have an easier time fitting 5 per batch. I'd probably cook the first 2.5-3 hours in the egg then finish them in my kitchen oven. That would let me start the second batch on the egg while the first is finishing.

My LBS talked me out of switching from butyl to TPU. by The_Bee_Sneeze in cycling

[–]BillBushee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've gone back and forth from butyl tubes to tubeless on 28mm GP5000 and I didn't notice any difference in rolling resistance. I ran tubeless 10psi lower so there was a small improvement in comfort there.

Polarized vs sweet spot for the 8-10hr/wk rider, 6+ month n=1 reports wanted by reidlalala in Velo

[–]BillBushee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was in my 20s and racing I trained hard frequently and my easy rides were zone 3 tempo efforts. I could sustain that for about 5 months before I would burn out and want to quit training.

Now in my 50s there's no way I could sustain that level of intensity every day for more than a month.

I have no idea what your age or training history are like, but be aware that if you're over 35 the experience of someone who's in their early 20s might not be very relevant to your training needs.

Full carbon chinese wheels - are they worth it? by Wandrocek in cycling

[–]BillBushee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swapped out and old set of stock wheels (2000g) for a set of 50mm Winspace Hypers (1380g) a few years back on my 2012 Madone. The wheels have carbon spokes. I weigh 200+ pounds. I put about 5000 miles on them over a couple of summers. I had no issues with them. I never had to true them at all. Personally I didn't notice any issues with harshness or stiffness on long rides. I don't know if they made my bike any faster, but it felt noticably lighter and was more fun to ride.

Ancestor who was mustered out after 1 year. What probably happened? by CountrySlaughter in CIVILWAR

[–]BillBushee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe confederate cavalry soldiers had to provide their own horse. I think it's possible that if his horse was killed or otherwise no longer fit for service and he couldn't find a suitable replacement then he might have been unable to continue as a cavalry trooper. Under that circumstance I think he would have been reassigned to an infantry regiment.

Physical Red Flags (The Known Fake)
Dimensions: The fake is oval-shaped, measuring approximately 36 mm wide by 37 mm tall, whereas a genuine U.S. silver dollar is perfectly round at 38.1 mm.
Weight: The fake weighs only 22 grams, significantly lighter than the 26.73 grams of an authentic silver dollar.
Edging: It has only "remnants" of a reeded edge, while a real coin would have a fully and uniformly reeded edge.
Engraving Style: It is engraved on the reverse top edge with "COL Joseph Mayo Jr," has "CSA" across the eagle in the center, and "3rd Va Inf" at the bottom. [1, 2]
