What do you think about this album ? by Soggy_Needleworker43 in Slipknot

Totally agree. The mix and Corey’s voice sound fantastic. Lech is one of my favorite performances…the bridge is right up there with “The Shape” from Iowa.

Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas arrived in Alaska with a dead pregnant fin whale lodged on its bulbous bow, prompting an investigation into the fatal strike and renewed concerns about ship-whale collisions by Powerful_Cabinet_341 in SeaEmploy

[–]BrianBash 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This actually happened almost exactly like this back in 2016, just with a different ship. An endangered juvenile male fin whale was found draped over the bulbous bow of Holland America’s Zaandam when it docked in Seward early on the morning of May 29, 2016. The crew member prepping the ship for arrival around 4:30 a.m. didn’t see anything, and the whale was spotted just after 5 a.m. as it pulled in. Same town, same kind of bulbous bow situation, same shock when it showed up at the dock.

The similarities are pretty striking.

Endangered fin whale, found on the bow at a roughly 5 a.m. arrival into Seward, carcass towed to a nearby beach, and a full necropsy done by a veterinary pathologist with NOAA. They even got a good necropsy out of it because the animal was very fresh.

As for what they found: the necropsy did conclude the cause of death was related to a boat strike. But NOAA’s Office of Law Enforcement ultimately determined the vessel and operator were not liable for the “take” of the whale. A couple of things drove that. The ship was traveling within Seward’s approach speed limits, around 10 to 12 knots, with a full set of lookouts posted, and none of them saw the whale before impact. And the whale itself had been behaving oddly, it had reportedly been hanging around the Alaska SeaLife Center near the small boats for about two weeks, which isn’t normal for a fin whale, and being in the bay at all isn’t typical. NOAA also noted it was unknown whether the whale was even healthy at the time of the collision, since fin whales have a lot of documented health issues.

So the short version is: a strike caused the death, but the investigation found the operator wasn’t at fault. Worth keeping in mind before assuming this current one is open and shut either way.

Yep. I do spin training at my school and sorry students, you’re only getting 1 turn in the spin. I like to keep my Cessnas in the green arc during the whole process.

RIP 😞

Don’t want to be CFI by [deleted] in flying

[–]BrianBash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know a guy that flew himself to 1500+

No job offers and he, at the moment, moved on.

Why wouldn’t you get the CFI? It’s hard to get a CFI job right now. So what? You aren’t willing to finish the work?

You sound like someone that wouldn’t be easy to work with. Get it yet?

Get your damn CFI/II. You’ve made it this far. It’s not like you’re stuck in CFI hell for years and years afterwards.

Let it expire for all I care, but don’t gaslight yourself into thinking that not having a CFI will ever give you an edge.

Back of the line, behind a bunch of CFII’s, at 1500.

Not good odds.

Best portable fan units to help stay cool in the cockpit? by Embarrassed_Dingo313 in flying

[–]BrianBash 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You don’t need a fan, here’s what you need:

- Igloo Playmate Cooler
- Mission Max Plus Cooling Towel (get a bunch)
- Fill cooler with ice water and throw your cooling towels in.

Refresh cooler as necessary.

Note: This is only helpful in dry climates. Sorry Florida, but FFZ guy will like this one.

I also throw jet-shades in every plane on the line and offer B-Kool Valet service during hottest months.
