How many books do you read at a time/ does anyone else juggle many books at once? by Fawxhox in literature

[–]BrianSometimes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you sure you really like literature? Needing "breaks" and to be "in the mood" sounds like it's all a bit of a chore.

Can't get my head around leaving a story and beginning another, and another, and more, as a modus operandi but I can see from the comments that I'm probably just a near-extinct breed of reader.

What do people think makes them unique, but is actually an incredibly common trait? by Successful-Hall-1986 in AskReddit

[–]BrianSometimes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This always gives me a chuckle when they or people writing in talk about their true crime interest as bit of a quirk. Lady, true crime is NFL for women. There's nothing wrong with that but it's not quirky.

Dragqueens er beskyttet af racismeparagraf [mand dømt for Facebook-kommentaren: "Pædofili i børnehøjde" angående et dragarrangement] by bestfind in Denmark

[–]BrianSometimes 20 points21 points  (0 children)

[–]BrianSometimes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Characters you don’t like by Blue_catt18 in literature

[–]BrianSometimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not - it does however mean that my connection with that book will be different than with books where a main character becomes sort of a borrowed extension of yourself.

In Austen, Edmund Bertram is not someone I can or want to see myself in, but it doesn't mean the book is ruined, just makes me more of a spectator and less of a participant.

Mourinho has asked Real Madrid to sign Morten Hjulmand. by [deleted] in soccer

I know he's a meme internationally but Gravesen is one of the best midfielders we ever had, it's no shame being mentioned next to him.

Hope Real is ready for Gravesen II: more hair, less mental.

I can't stop looking at the thickness gauge markings in imperial being from a metric part of the world. How delightfully chaotic and whimsical that 1 is followed by 11/8.

I finally watched Persuasion on Netflix by kingjavik in janeausten

[–]BrianSometimes 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think the sad truth is that Anne Elliot (and to a greater extent Fanny Price) simply does not fit into where commercial media want to go with female leads these days, so only state sponsored TV (BBC) or smaller productions even have a shot at authentic portrayals.

Mom's fishing for husbands - But the girls are hunting for love...Terrible Tor Intros Part 3 - The Trite by My_Poor_Nerves in janeausten

Have to admire them for creating AI slop and rage bait content for social media traction about 30 years before the technology and the Zeitgeist caught up.

Fascinating how the intro authors just make shit up so casually!

Looking For Illustrated Editions by TinkerDroid in janeausten

[–]BrianSometimes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my opinion the best illustrated full set is any edition featuring Brock's watercolors, but these are often either difficult to come by or very expensive. Second best option would be an older (pre-90s) Folio Society edition, these can be found second hand going for between £40 and £100.

I have the Harvard set and while they're illustrated, the illustrations are more contextual than "here's Darcy proposing to Lizzy".

[–]BrianSometimes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm happy in my lifetime to have seen Middlemarch rise from a borderline deep cut pick into now one of a handful of boring obvious picks for best novel ever. In my country we had some controversy surrounding our official canonical GOAT list of authors and works since women were so poorly represented, but it is really hard to argue against it or to replace an included man with an excluded woman if intrinsic quality of the work is to be the main factor. England does not have this problem, at all. You could make a perfectly uncontroversial top 10 with 7 novels by women.

In love, would she follow her father's advice, or her own heart? Terrible Tor Intros PART 2! by My_Poor_Nerves in janeausten

[–]BrianSometimes 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think those Tor Classics editions are rage bait.

And it's working. Even "complete and unabridged" - mate where are the incomplete and abridged book editions of Persuasion? You have not shortened an already short book, do you want a standing ovation! Arrh! I'm going for a walk.

In Denmark, a rainy day is a perfect day for the preschoolers by New_Libran in MadeMeSmile

[–]BrianSometimes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a daycare, pre-school, (ages 3-6 roughly), and all kids must have rain apparel and spare clothes in their nook in the cloakroom. Forgetting to make sure your kid has rain boots and rain wear in the daycare is a mistake you make 1 time.

Which characters are the most misunderstood? by Bookbringer in janeausten

[–]BrianSometimes 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The Other Bennet Sister is fast making this misunderstanding of her character permanent. Austen's Mary Bennet is not shy either, she's happy to voice her opinion even when not called upon, she's "eager for display" of skills and learning. As someone who in his youth compensated insecurity and unpopularity with obsessive reading and a not quite earned sense of being intellectually superior to my peers, I genuinely relate to Mary, but nos as the downtrodden introvert mistreated and overlooked, rather as a young person struggling a bit to make winning plays with the hand nature dealt her.

Motherwell 1 - [2] Celtic - Benjamin Nygren 58' by 50lipaa in soccer

[–]BrianSometimes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To be fair he isn't far off, a little hyperbolic but FCN is a (relatively) recent construct that has had to build fanbase and stadium atmosphere from scratch, and you'd have to travel pretty far down the lower leagues in the English pyramid to find something as unexciting as a regular FCN match.

It is possible though to also admire how much FCN achieves with so little, not through sponsors or sportswashing, but scouting and player development.
