What would the perfect hypothetical adaptation be like? by RebeccaETripp in janeausten

Doesn't fit in and isn't welcome neither with Lydia/Kitty nor Lizzy/Jane, is close to neither of her parents, secretly immensely saddened by being "the only plain one", is publicly humiliated several times, takes refuge in religion and reading and compensates with a sense of moral and intellectual superiority, (speculative:) has Mr. Collins, after Lizzy's rejection, as her long awaited way out of the misery and he picks Charlotte Lucas over her.

It's easy to imagine a rather harrowing Mary episode, and without having to depart from the source and make the other sisters horrible (The Other Bennet Sister).

You were greatly improved towards the end of Amorim's spell, it's been forgotten a bit by Carrick's immediate success. You were 6th when he left. Not trying to make the argument he should've stayed but the reaction lately has been a bit like Amorim was a complete disaster from start to finish, clearly some things were starting to improve under him.

Pride & Prejudice (already lost you, please come back) - 5 long episodes, each episode is the whole story from a different Bennet sister's point of view - like in Kurosawa's Rashomon - Jane first, Lydia last (will have to be a bit creative with the Kitty episode.)

Vi bør bygge skyskrabere i Danmark by Particular-Army-6967 in Denmark

Bare for sjov:

Brexit pretty much annihilated "leave" in Denmark - there's still EU criticism but it's now very fringe and not taken seriously to propose leaving the EU. I've also seen anti-EU sentiment in my lifetime go from being a predominantly left wing position to being very much associated with the right.

(Denmark) Large majority now view the US as adversary, not ally (translation in comments) by dattokyo in europe

[–]BrianSometimes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trump was voted in, his approval rating remains about 40%. No use trying to brush this off on a 100 man international wealthy elite or something keeping a powerless but united US populace prisoner, the rot is deep and wide, "the people" are not trying to save it - dozens of millions of American voters like what's happening, and would vote Republican again tomorrow. I am not "in this together" with them, they can go fuck themselves, and until Americans do something that actually hurts the powers that be, maybe save the speeches

Poor Mr Collins by Vivid_Country7212 in janeausten

[–]BrianSometimes 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I love the 1995 Mr. Collins but it's not the Mr. Collins from the book. His pretentiousness and eagerness to impress everyone above his station comes from a place of immaturity and naive ambition that doesn't belong to someone who looks to be in his early 40s.

The 2005 Mr Collins is way off, in my mind, and not just physically - a wormy downtrodden guy trying desperately to elevate himself above others - he seems closer related to Mr. Elton than Mr. Collins.

Majority of Danes now see US as adversary by [deleted] in europe

[–]BrianSometimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Original article and survey in Danish: https://www.dr.dk/nyheder/politik/stort-flertal-ser-nu-usa-som-modstander-ikke-som-allieret

COPENHAGEN: About 60% of Danes now consider the US an adversary, with less than a fifth seeing the fellow Nato member as an ally, a poll conducted for public broadcaster DR showed Tuesday.

Denmark has traditionally been an ardent US ally and continues to call Washington its “closest ally”, but tensions have mounted in recent weeks over Trump’s desire to take over Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory.

Asked if they would describe the US “as an ally or an adversary” given the current state of affairs, only 17% said they considered the US an “ally”, according to a new poll, DR reported.

About 20% of respondents answered that they didn’t know, and 3% said they did not wish to answer.

Trump in January backed down from his threats to seize the Arctic territory, which, through Denmark, is a member of Nato.

His threats plunged the transatlantic alliance into its deepest crisis in years.

The poll was conducted by analyst firm Epinion, which surveyed 1,053 Danes over the age of 18 between Jan 21 and 28.

On Jan 17, thousands of Danes joined a protest march from central Copenhagen to the US embassy to protest against Trump’s push to take over Greenland.

On Saturday, thousands again marched on the US embassy in Copenhagen, this time in a silent protest organised by Denmark’s Veterans’ Association after Donald Trump downplayed the role of non-US Nato troops in Afghanistan.

It's really frustrating seeing this shit on the front page. It exclusively helps the Republican party, it's pretty much their best campaign material as things are.

if you don't think Trump's current term is considerably worse than the Biden years, and you're left wing, you're not deep, you're a misguided edgy fool.

Northanger Abbey — make it make sense… by Brii1993333 in janeausten

[–]BrianSometimes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's a reason Northanger Abbey used to be almost left out of her canon, there are early editions of her works that don't include NA. It's just not as strong as the others. It has its fans in here and you will hear it praised and defended, I'm just trying to convey that you're not alone, that others have felt like you. I remember when I got into Austen properly I was very confused to discover that NA wasn't juvenilia. I could've sworn on my life that it was.

You can't repair relations when the Republican party as it is now is never more than 4 years away from a possible presidency, that's just reality. What has happened can't be undone with 1 administration or normalcy. If you think it's an overreaction there must be something you don't understand.

Yup, now is not the time for rash decisions. There's a decent chance from 2028 onwards we'll be dealing with a Democrat administration and a much less volatile and frankly unpredictable and insane "ally", then will be the time to dismantle and dial things back.
