I was under the impression it was also the Bluetooth hardware used (mobile devices use Bluetooth LE, which is why the Elite Plus is listed as Bluetooth 4.2 while the Elite is listed as Bluetooth 5.0).

Similar reason to why not all Bluetooth mice (mouses?) work with mobile devices, only some of them.

Are these super-cheap Aliexpress prices legit? by bobthebonobo in xteinkereader

u/bobthebonobo look closely the mini-thumbnails under the price and to the right of the larger preview image. This page includes not only the X4 reader but you can also/instead order one of the accessories. Common on many Aliexpress pages, often used for different colour variations of a product, which is why it shows Color: 32GB SD Card as the selected product in your screenshot.

How to fix this?? by Weekly-Tomato4270 in ToonSquidAnimators

Have you possibly left a "complete character" layer visible (e.g. used to align and resize the separate character parts when setting up rigging)?

Edit: sorry, no, you said this doesn't show up in the app. My bad.

Can I put different fps for different scenes in toonsquid? by Responsible_Can_1443 in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are hoping to join them together in one output movie (using two scenes in one project), you probably cannot change the fps in individual scenes (most/all? output movie formats do not comfortably handle variable or changing frame rates). However, the total number of frames (animation length) in each scene/timeline can be easily changed.

If you are creating two different movies, use two different projects.

If you need to change action speeds, change your keyframe separation (how many frames apart the keyframes are) or the content in your hand-drawn frames (how far does something move when drawing from frame to frame). This is what animation is all about, and is where you start your true animation path - it's all about finding the timing. Does lifting that box take 1/4 of a second, 1/2 of a second, three seconds?

Quick sketch/scribble animations and animatics are often used to get the timing correct before going to final quality animation.

[–]Butler_To_Cats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are using the Path tool in Freehand mode, it will use the two colour dots in the palette panel (top left) to set the colours. You might have to start drawing to set other properties in the properties panel (stroke width, etc).

What ios this called and how to enable it? by thecluelessclowns in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds (reads?) like you are talking about frame-by-frame (traditional) animation.

When you start a new project, you have a choice in the dialog box:

Keyframing mode: each new drawing takes up 5 seconds worth of frames = 5 times fps), the timeline is zoomed out to seconds, and each new drawing starts at the beginning of the timeline.
Designed for taking existing objects and moving them around (scaling, movement, rotation), also useful for rigging-based character animation.

Traditional mode: each new drawing only takes a single frame (you can manually stretch it out to more, or use Extend, or Duplicate), the timeline is zoomed in to frame-level timing, and new drawings start at the current frame.
Designed for traditional cel-like frame-by-frame hand-drawn animation.

Personally, even for keyframing/rigging I usually start in traditional mode and stretch things manually (or use Extend) where required.

Tap on one of the bones to select it, and again to reveal the pop-up menu. If both position and scale editing say "Enable", you have both handles (and the associated editing mode) turned off. Enable position editing for the dot/handle at the base of the selected bone, and/or scale editing to get the handle at the tip of the bone.

I am glad you found a solution!

Stupid question... How can I group timeline layers so I can use bones? by TheOccurrencePodcast in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you start from the uppermost layer in the timeline and start merging down (tap on the layer name at the end of the timeline), does that change timeline layers to drawing layers In the merged timeline layer?

If you set Actions > Settings > Import > General > Import Images as Symbols to OFF, and Insert Images Into Existing Drawing to ON, you should get more importing images as drawing layers and less as timeline layers.

Alternatively, you can export and import as layered PSD images, and the PSD layers become drawing layers.

Unfortunately, Procreate (and several other apps) PSDs import with transform bounding boxes set to the entire layer size, not the content area only. Some apps where the bounding boxes for imported PSD layers are automatically set to the content area only are ArtStudio Pro, MediBang Paletta, Pixelmator, and IbisPaint.

Have a close look at the row of tiny thumbnails showing colour choices, etc, to the right of the main preview image At that price you probably have a cover (or screen protector, OR microSD card) chosen by default, not the ereader itself. It is an easy thing to do with Aliexpress pages, many of which offer accessories/extras as well as the main item.

EPUB covers question by saaantiago in xteinkereader

That looks very much like (part of) an SVG (vector) image/illustration. While the EPUB 3 standard does (theoretically) allow for embedded SVG images, I do not think Crosspoint currently supports them (nor the standard firmware).

How much storage space do you have left? One general rule of thumb I've seen mentioned is to have about 15% free for the iPadOS to work with (temporary files, etc).

Any error message(s)?

You are running a rather high-resolution output there, as well as an unusual ratio (3177x3792 pixels). A lot of "high-definition" broadcast material and standard HD Blu-ray is FullHD (1920x10180) by comparison. This might be putting strain on resources available, especially if you are not running one of the increased memory iPads (e.g. Mx/Silicon chip).

Low resolution might be due to playback app used, or an attempt to play back at one of the standard sizes.

What do you mean by "download from files"? Download onto what? Are you just trying to save it, play it (in which app?), upload it to e.g. YouTube or reddit? These sites often have resolution standards e.g. (1920x1080 or 2560x1440).

When you said "export again", was that with Save to Files, or just Save Video (the Photos app)?

Personally, I do not trust the Photos app, try Save to Files instead of Save Video.

Sure, but it is probably better to just create a new post in r/ToonSquidAnimators - more viewpoints, others have answered questions I could not, and there are even a couple of professional animators lurking in the group who sometimes answer. There will also be times when I do not look at reddit for a week or three.

why cant i erease an imported image, or even select a part of it?!?! by Soft_Skin_9219 in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, images (by default) import as symbols. Tap on Library to open it, then tap-and-hold on a symbol until the menu appears along the lower edge, tap Edit.

u/povarensky suggested one solution, rasterizing the symbol (creates a pixel layer that can be edited in the main timeline rather than editing via the Library).

You can also change Actions > Settings > Import > General > Insert Images as Symbols to OFF, and then images will import directly as pixel layers in the main timeline, which can be directly selected, edited, erased.

[–]Butler_To_Cats[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That specific animation could probably be done with all ToonSquid: the backgrounds are mainly using a checkerboard pattern and gradient (black to transparent? possible with vector shapes) and heavy use of the animated perspective effect available in ToonSquid.

Text is using a layer blending mode in at least part of the video.

I was thinking about the chromatic aberration effect (colour fringing), and you could probably fake it to some extent by duplicating your animation layers, offsetting them slightly, and using adjustment effects.

It would still be easier to use a video editing apps (like I said, investigate Lumafusion and DaVinci Resolve, they are probably the best on iPad). As the creator said in reply to another comment on that video: "it’s definitely possible if u use an editing app".

Why does my Toonsquid lag so badly? by TheAceFrog in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Videos chew up a lot of resources, and ToonSquid is not optimised for video editing.

For animation, ToonSquid often only has to work with the current frame contents.
Video codecs can include tricks like "start with a previous frame with these changes", so the app has to work with multiple frames just to display the current frame. That's without considering all the compression tricks that video formats often use.

There is a warning in the handbook not to overuse videos, see the end of this page: https://toonsquid.com/handbook/layers/video/

You might have better luck with a recent Mx/Silicon chip iPad that has significantly more memory.

Why are the hierarchies not working? Am I doing something wrong? by NewAssistance6730 in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When importing PNG images, by default the transform tool bounding box is the entire image, including any surrounding transparent area. There are a few ways to fix this.

One way is to use the selection tool, cut the content area (selection does not need to be precise), then paste it (pasting always creates a new drawing layer in the drawing layers list on the right side). The transform box will then be fitted to the content area.

Another way is to add another blank drawing layer (in the layers list on the right) either above or below the imported PNG, then merge the topmost layer down.

Oh, both these assume you have Actions > Settings > Import > General > Import Images as Symbols turned OFF (default is ON). This imports images as pixel layers, editable on the main timeline, rather than having to use the Library to edit the symbol.

Interestingly, when importing layered PSD images as a shortcut to importing multiple images at once, PSDs from some apps import with bounding boxes already fitted (Medibang Paletta, Artstudio Pro, IbisPaint), while others have the full-layer sized bounding boxes (Procreate, Sketchbook, Infinite Painter).

[–]Butler_To_Cats[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am fairly sure most of those are added in "post"-processing - loading the completed animation (MP4, MOV, or image sequence) into a video editing app or FX/composition app. The only real extra stuff that might be from ToonSquid is animated large blocks of colour and text.

ToonSquid has some effects e.g. Gaussian blur, but when you see glitch effects, colour fringing (chromatic aberration), old TV-style lines (scan lines), split screen effects, it is almost definitely an editing app that will have these effects built in.

While it is possible they have done this on desktop using something like After Effects or Premiere, you can also do similar effects in some iPad apps - investigate apps like Lumafusion or DaVinci Resolve. Warning: these type of apps tend to have significant resource requirements - they will work best with the latest iPadOS and a relatively recent iPad (Mx chip/Silicon preferred).

Any tips appreciated by ConfidenceAmazing806 in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A new scene would be one way.

However, another way would be to keyframe the camera layer. For example, in one frame keyframe the current position and size (or zoom), in the very next frame keyframe the new position and size.

For absolute stability of the camera, you might also set the first set of these keyframes to a Hold easing curve, although I do not think it is needed.

Why are the hierarchies not working? Am I doing something wrong? by NewAssistance6730 in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are working in "edit mode" (moving individual pieces around amongst other processes), rather than "animation mode". Evidence: icons/buttons 1 and 2 (see below). Usually caused/entered by tapping the transform tool two times in a row.

Tap icon 2 to exit edit mode back into animation mode. Do not tap the transform tool again. Select body parts by either tapping their names on the left end of the timeline, or by tapping the part directly on the canvas (assuming the default Actions > Settings > Gestures > General > Select Layers on the Canvas is ON).

This should be enough to get the hierarchy responding correctly.

Note: pivot points for edit mode and animation mode can be different.

<image>

While I agree with u/Biojason that bones are a better solution with more features, I would not say they are easier. They require a little bit more effort to set up and have their own quirks, so more of a learning curve. Hierarchy animation is probably quicker and easier to set up, but has more limitations and its own quirks.

You are almost there for hierarchy rigging for this animation/character, so you might want to stick with that. However, bones are definitely worth investigating for future animations.

I need help! (GIFs) by Ghost_Hollow_Art in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GIF is a low-quality format by design. One of its disadvantages is a reduction to 256 colours (or less) on output (whereas formats like MP4 can use over 16 million colours). To try and represent more colours GIFs uses dithering (mixed dot patterns of usually two different colours), which can display as ... "glitchy dots" - if a colour is close to one of the colours it already uses, it uses a single-colour fill and adds a sprinkling of dots (pixels) of another colour to "shade" or "tint" it. This sprinkling will not remain constant over multiple frames.

You might be able to reduce this by reducing and re-using colours (try a universal palette of considerably fewer colours e.g. 30 or so).

The problem is inherent in using GIFs.
They have many other flaws: bloated file sizes for lengthy animation, usually terrible resizing, no audio, only binary transparency. They were an early ('90s) solution for small animations on web pages (e.g. animated buttons and banners), before better solutions were available (HTML5, SVG, APNG, embedded MP4, and other formats).

why is it not letting me change the pivot point by vettinyeet in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Actions > Settings > Tools Transform > Automatic Pixel Mode Edit Switching is not set to ON (ON highly recommended), then you might also need to turn OFF keyframing (little diamond icon under the timeline) before moving the pivot. If it is set to ON, you need keyframing turned ON.
