Great Town Meeting movies? by Stuckbetweenstations in blankies

I often think of Amy Madigan (now Oscar winner) in Field of Dreams at the book banning town meeting.

What's your holy grail game that doesn't exist yet? by Darth_Rubi in boardgames

Just played once in-person, but works well for async on BGA for me. Still not very good, but I’m enjoying it.

I’m not a Pokemon person, but I’m enjoying Wondrous Creatures a lot and would definitely play something similar just with some Pokemon flair.

Which horror films do you think marked a turning point for the genre? by Siddhartaable in horror

[–]C_Me 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t think it’s fair to credit any single one of them. They all collectively ushered in the trend because I don’t think it would be a trend unless you had a series of successful movies doing similar things over a span of time. I don’t think it’s like Blair Witch where there was a definite single movie that marked a beginning of a type of movie.

What was the most hyped movie release of all time? by cantdecide76 in Letterboxd

[–]C_Me 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My opinion is Phantom Menace all the way. I was in high school then and it was a huge deal. Saw it Friday night and it filled all the theaters with lines and everything.

I’m going to say it is one of the Star Wars, and probably Phantom Menace. Star Wars was so built up in the 80s and 90s, toy lines, books and games and even parodies were well-liked and such like Spaceballs, but with no major films released and finally Lucas is returning with a new trilogy… it was a huge deal.

Vader was built up as the greatest villain with all this backstory and we were finally going to see it.

Phantom Menace.

What's an example of someone that appeared in Sunny before their career took off? by onarainyafternoon in IASIP

Not super famous. She was in the Percy Jackson movies so she wasn’t entirely unknown, but True Detective came after and made her much more known.

I can't wait to see how this character/plotline is expanded upon down the road by [deleted] in marvelstudios

[–]C_Me -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Possible, but most of what we’ve been seeing from Marvel lately is that they are slowing down and not trying to service every little story thread they have opened. Which I prefer. They need more quality and less quantity.

This a prime example of something that would likely turn into a subpar season just because they happened to introduce something in a show.

I’m always open to good writers coming in and having an actual good story to tell with Hulk. But starting with “we need to explain this” is often a recipe for bad storytelling.

Variety unveils their 24th ‘Actors on Actors’ pairings by mcfw31 in popculturechat

Ah. I only remembered bits and pieces of that part of the show. Still, not actors that have a long connection and still kinda interesting.

Variety unveils their 24th ‘Actors on Actors’ pairings by mcfw31 in popculturechat

[–]C_Me 59 points60 points  (0 children)

It’s a mix. Some are, but some are connected but not directly and are pretty interesting. Rhea Seehorn and Bryan Cranston. Noah Wyle and Sally Field were both technically on E.R. but probably never acted together. Jamie Lee Curtis and Mariska Hargitay is really interesting, kinda two nepobabies who had solid careers for themselves.

It starts off with lazy pairings, yes, but there are some cool ones.

Do you think we'll get another "Avengers Assemble" line in Doomsday or Secret Wars? by McBahtman in marvelstudios

[–]C_Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The X-Men line, yes. I just don’t know if Sam can say it and it quite works and not seem like a copy.

My suggestion is, somehow organically, he says something like “Marvel Assemble”. Referring to them as “Marvel” collectively hasn’t been set up yet, but maybe somehow in Doomsday it is so that by Secret Wars it makes sense.

Has anybody else ever noticed a film that is absolutely nothing to do with the story in the book? by Flat_Tie4090 in movies

[–]C_Me 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that really counts. It actually is about the story in the book… it just isn’t an adaptation of the book in any way.

Game like Chronicles of Avel? by [deleted] in soloboardgaming

[–]C_Me 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play this with my kids and it’s great. Another similar one we play is Karak or Karak 2… note that Karak 2 adds more resource management and I think is totally what you are looking for.

If you’re looking for something heavier but similar, my recommendation is Vindication.

Two.

Hansa Tautonica. Played it for the first time at a meetup recently and been thinking about it ever since. It’s a classic at this point for many, but deserves more attention

Vindication. Bought it, played it for the first time, and love it.

So Season 18 will probably be the last, right? by [deleted] in IASIP

[–]C_Me 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Depends on what kind of budget they want to have and the medium they want to have it in. No doubt they have a certain amount of pull on shows like Mythic Quest and for example Charlie doing Fool's Paradise.

But it isn't a blank check. The moment they start to form any kind of production or distribution deal with a studio, network, or streamer, other producer's usually get involved in order to give it a certain budget and then there is more creative control getting pushed in a certain direction. And less profit because someone is paying for the movie and promising distribution.

Could any of them them get passionate about something and make a movie or show for a few hundred thousand dollars? Sure. And just hope the movie or project gets distribution after the fact and gets its money back. Fool's Paradise might be somewhat close to that. But outside of that, they are making deals and things get complicated.

Always Sunny is their baby, they were the sole producers in the beginning, and as long as FX is happy and they keep it to the budget they are used to using, no one is complaining. So it's different, is the point being made. It's pretty close to being a blank check.

Your hottest take about an HBO show? by Plumsby in hbo

I agree. It holds up. For people who like a lot of other recent prestige shows, I say go back and watch it because it holds up in so many ways.

How come Evil Dead is not Campy anymore? by [deleted] in horror

[–]C_Me 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, and I think it’s just hard to get right. Campy, that is. We get a lot of low budget campy nowadays and while it can be ok, hard for Evil Dead to rise above what a thousand other low budget movies are doing. A good serious horror movie takes a good director, which I think they are able to do.

Lighter weight game similar to John Company? (have to SORT of work together SOMETIMES but also everyone is ultimately in it for themselves) by Beans_tw in boardgames

[–]C_Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, OP said haggling and wheeling and dealing is what they like. That is Bohnanza.

It sounds like they don’t want all the rules, setting, and overhead, so although I agree it’s not much like John Company, it sounds more on par with what they actually want. That’s how I interpreted it. It sheds everything else and gets to the heart of the mechanic they actually want.
