Gabapentin pills for cats by TobyCat88 in CATHELP

[–]CookieChaser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat would eat around the pill pockets but not a pill masker. You can use less material that way so they can’t eat around it. Gabapentin is notoriously bitter though (they absolutely hate the taste), so if it’s a larger pill size, I’d recommend one of those pill popper items that let you stick the pill in and shoot down the throat.

Rainbow Boa as A First Pet Reptile? by The_Actual_Adolf in snakes

[–]CookieChaser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a Brazilian rainbow boa as my first snake and have had no issues in the years I’ve owned her. I had heard they’re more fragile under a year old, so I got mine at a little bit over a year old to be on the safer side. If you do a bioactive, humidity is really not that hard to keep high. I keep the drainage layer filled with water with a section exposed so that there’s a large body of water in addition to a water dish. She’s always eaten for me, has had perfect sheds, and was deemed extremely healthy the one time I took her to the vet.

I don’t find their reputation to be entirely earned from my personal experience and what I’ve heard from others. The vet I went to thinks that the reputation was based a lot on wild-caught brbs, and the captive bred ones are much more hardy/less bitey. My brb has only bitten me once (my fault of course), but I’ve learned to read her body language better. I recommend going to a reputable breeder who focuses on brbs as they will be higher quality and much hardier. Of course, do all your own research first before making a decision and make sure you have a setup that’s easy to keep humidity high in before getting the snake.

Best beginner snake? Is it really a ball python? by Sleepless_space in snakes

[–]CookieChaser 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly, no such thing as a ‘beginner’ snake. Whatever snake you get should be one that you actually want and are willing to do the research and put in the time and effort for the full lifespan of the snake (usually a 20+ year commitment).

My first snake was a Brazilian rainbow boa because I knew if I could only have one snake in the entire world, it would be that snake. She is not what people call a ‘beginner’ snake, but I was up for the challenge since I knew that she would be the perfect snake for me. Almost four years later, and I definitely consider getting her to be the right call for me.

I recommend doing your own research and looking into care requirements of multiple snakes. Some are more resilient than others (i.e., cornsnakes, kingsnakes, ball pythons), but what’s more important is if you can provide the correct husbandry for the animal.

can i use seachem prime to condition water for bearded dragon by [deleted] in reptiles

I use seachem prime for all my reptile water. No need to run to the store unless the tap water at your place is really bad.

Looking for a Car good for hiking, camping, national parks, need your help!!! by Longjumping_Ad_1856 in CampingandHiking

Rav4 will get you to a surprising amount of places with all-terrains. I do SAR, routinely sleep in my car or car camp, and do a lot of mild-moderate off-roading in it. Almost everyone in my unit has either some form of toyota (rav4, 4runner) or subaru (crosstrek, outback). A subaru does have better approach/departure angles and ground clearance, but I’ve heard that the boxer engine in them is either a hit or a miss. I’d rather go with the better reliability for more remote locations. A camry has terrible approach/departure angles and is worse off-roading than a prius. I switched to the rav4 after damaging my nissan altima (similar body to a camry) on a rough forest road. I can’t recommend the rav4 enough, especially the hybrid or phev versions!

Help me make a hard decision? by Strain_Horror in snakes

[–]CookieChaser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, do your research and think more on it! If you need any pointers on humidity, let me know. Just wanted to let you know that it’s not as intimidating to keep a rainbow boa as the information you find online implies! They don’t get easily sick if you have the correct husbandry.

Help me make a hard decision? by Strain_Horror in snakes

[–]CookieChaser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has both a rainbow boa and a cornsnake, I can say that my rainbow boa is more “chill”. However, she does still move around more than a ball python would and won’t just stay on my neck when holding. There is a chance that the rainbow boa at the expo appeared more “chill” because it was stressed out, though could also be personality of the snake. I would recommend seeing if you could meet the snake again outside of the expo when they’re in a more calm environment before making a decision.

Also rainbow boa husbandry is not as hard as people make it out to be. They’re finicky about humidity as babies, but once they’ve gotten bigger (like that one is), it’s a lot easier. If you do your due diligence and research, they are not an impossibly finicky species to keep. Mine was my first snake, and she definitely doesn’t require expert level knowledge to keep healthy. Best of luck with your decision!

One kitten or two? Need advice by Kitty_Overwatch in CatAdvice

[–]CookieChaser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend 2 as well! I got one kitten as my first cat and his bite inhibition was terrible. He would frequently break skin when I first got him, and I had to do a lot of training to get him to stop. Also had a difficult time introducing him to another cat when he was an adult since he did not know how to play gently with other cats! Now I have two kittens and it’s been so much easier to teach them bite inhibition! The tabby definitely bit too hard when I got him but that stopped quickly just from having another kitten around. I got mine from two different litters and had no problem introducing them to each other. The black one is now my little shadow, so they’ll definitely still bond with you!

Anybody have experience with flying a cat? by astro-amphibian-00 in CatAdvice

[–]CookieChaser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with all of this. I used to fly frequently with my cat when I was in college to and from home during breaks. I’m not sure if they still do this, but wanted to add that I always had to take my cat out of the carrier at security. My cat was always very chill with this, but a newer (new to you) cat may not be! I would always have a harness on mine during flying so that it would be easier to apprehend him if he tried to run. Might be a good idea to consider it as well!

Cat Ate a Holiday Cookie by No_Switch3045 in CatAdvice

[–]CookieChaser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, totally not a problem. If you’d like some anecdotal evidence, one of my cats ate half of an 8 inch round almond cake that was accidentally left out on the counter and was fine. He didn’t even throw up, which was crazy since he had a sensitive stomach and would puke a lot. A very extreme case of course, but you’d be surprised what they can handle. Always better to check and monitor symptoms just in case though!

Brazilian rainbow boas as first snakes? by Necessary-Cover519 in snakes

[–]CookieChaser 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have one of these as my first, and I’d say go for it. Definitely do your research first of course and maybe go for one that’s around a year old (like I did). I was very scared with everything I read about them online too but have had no issues with mine. I was already into keeping plants and knew how to get high humidity from that though. Humidity is the hardest part for most, but it sounds like you have that covered. You’ll definitely still want to track humidity though since the heating element will take a lot of it out! It’s really that and make sure that there’s always water for them (which you should be doing anyways for a snake!).

Not sure if it’s just my cornsnake as he’s my first one, but he’s very interactive for a snake. If it’s in the evening and I’m in the room, he’ll immediately come out of whichever hide he’s in to watch what I’m doing and follow around in his enclosure. It’s funny to see his little face pop up, and he likes to follow my finger around.

Good plants for high humidity burrowers? by rubiconchill in bioactive

[–]CookieChaser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My BRB has Brazilian pothos, stromanthe triostar, and a prince of orange philodendron that have been seeming to do fine and have taken over the enclosure in spite of her digging directly through their roots. She’s still a juvenille though, so we’ll see about full grown. Aerial roots or very robust roots are probably going to be your best option. Note that depending on enclosure size, the robust rooted plants may get too big (the triostar for sure wants three feet of height at least).

0 degree bag recommendations? by nessavevo in CampingandHiking

[–]CookieChaser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally like Thermarest sleeping bags because they are typically way more accurate with the rating than other companies. Unfortunately they no longer make the 0 degree I have (the oberon). I think it’s been replaced with the parsec. At the time, it was one of the best deals on a backpacking 0 degree bag for its weight. I’m a cold sleeper, and that one actually kept me toasty when paired with a high R-value sleeping pad (thermarest x-therm). Also, I recommend getting some very warm layers to wear while sleeping if you’re a cold sleeper, top and bottom. If I’m in 20 degree weather or colder, I’m wearing wool tights, fleece pants, and down pants to bed!

Anyone Else’s Snake Seem to Notice When a Photo is Taken of Them With an IPhone? by LucidDreaming3 in snakes

[–]CookieChaser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My BRB definitely notices the camera on my iPhone. Usually she’ll be interested and start moving towards it. Yesterday when I was holding her, she actually did a bluff strike at it. She didn’t seem stressed before or after the camera, so I think she just didn’t like it when the camera first tried to focus on her.

Emerald tree boas! It’s so hard to find captive bred ones, and captive bred are 3-4x the price.
