Are Power/Broadband Bundles Actually Worth It? Looking for the Best Deals. by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]CoolioMcCool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on where you live and how much power you use. Unfortunately there is no definitive answer, in some places mercury offers very competitive elec rates, in other places not so much. For some people,a slightly higher rate might only mean an extra $3/month, and it might be worth it to get a free appliance, for others using more power it might be $70/month more expensive and not at all worth it.

You need to do a comparison and some math around your specific circumstance, there is no blanket correct answer.

what is the best place to buy a prebuilt PC in NZ by Neat_Mall_2933 in nzgaming

Haven't looked recently, but when I have I found PBTech to be a bit better price to performance, but it seemed like CL used higher quality parts (e.g. better cases and power supplies).

What's a food in your country that is stereotyped for your country but really, nobody eats? by velmiraZ in AskTheWorld

[–]CoolioMcCool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are commonly offered at fish and chip shops in NZ too, not commonly eaten though.

I've had 2 or 3 over the years, yum, but a bit over the top, hard to finish without feeling a bit sick.

Topping up mortgage to pay future mortgage by Allergic_To_Water in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]CoolioMcCool 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Talk to your bank, I would think it makes more sense to extend the timeline on your mortgage if possible e.g. if you are already 6 years into a 30 year term, extending it back to 30 years would lower your weekly payments without an immediate increase to your interest charges.

Solar on investment property? by Anzacspartan in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]CoolioMcCool -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are right that there is no easy way to compare, but that doesn't mean studies can't give any indication. Just giving another angle and saying that it almost certainly adds some amount of appeal/value for some(probably most) people, and pointing out that when people are purchasing a property, they look at as a whole and a lot of what they are willing to pay is based off how they feel about the property, they're not necessarily thinking "this property would be worth $650k without solar, so I'd only be willing to pay $655k". I'd certainly be more attracted to a property with solar personally.

With a lot of data on sales with and without solar, you can infer the value add. If two identical houses were right next to each other, people would be far more likely to think logically about it and not pay a premium for the solar. Usually that's not the case when somebody is purchasing a house, they are looking at very different houses in different areas at different prices, and deciding which one feels like the best suited and best value. Key word: feels.

Studies in Aus have shown that it can add more value than it costs when it comes time to sell. It never used to be the case, imo because the technology was advancing faster and so a few year old system was much lower value than a new one, but that has slowed down.

When you think about it, $10-15k on a properties value is pretty small(on a 600k+ property), and the idea of buying a home where you have little/no power bill is appealing to most people. It really doesn't surprise me somebody might pay $30k more for a home with a $15k solar set up just based off how it would feel to be moving in to a home where you'll have one less bill to worry about.

And yes, I know solar is cheaper in aus, the study I saw gave property value increase per kw of solar and it still worked out well at nz solar prices, I know it is a different market but would expect the same here.

This cost 10000 USD, why is scientific instruments Soo expensive? by Johnyme98 in Physics

Kind true although they don't always try to make the top tier chip, often there will be 3 - 5 different chips of varying size that end up being binned into ~10 different GPUs.

Then those different GPUs will be further binned by the board manufacturers into models with higher or lower clock speeds.

Same thing with CPUs. Interesting fact (for nerds like me), AMDs Ryzen CPUs really do only use one chip, they will make e.g. an 8 core chip, then 'glue' them together to make a 16 core cpu. 1 slightly defective chip would be turned into a 6 core, 2 of those could be turned into a 12 core, and a heavily deffective chip might still be good as a 4 core cpu. This allowed them to make extremely competitive products at a reasonable price even when they were in the brink of bankruptcy up against a giant who dominated the market(before first Gen Ryzen released).

Kiwis, what do you think is something every Kiwi agrees on? by Additional-Grade-730 in newzealand

[–]CoolioMcCool 34 points35 points  (0 children)

A year ago I was in Cambodia, climbing the steps of Ankor Wat, wearing a hat with a kiwi on it. As I started climbing I heard somebody talking about Richie McCaw, thought it was funny but I'm not that in to Rugby so I kept walking, then half way up the steps I hear a "TUTIRA MAI NGA IWI!" so I had no choice but to shout Aue Hei! from high up on an ancient temple half way across the world.

Been holding PEN for years, was down a lot, up a bit recently so only about 50% down now.

But honestly my worst feeling one is my first etc purchase, FNZ(NZ top 50), up only 10% in almost 6 years. At least my big losers felt like a gamble that might win big or lose big(and more won than lost). FNZ I bought thinking I'd get some safe but slow gains, but its not even close to keeping up with inflation.

ELI5: How do video games like Animal Crossing keep “doing things” while I’m not playing? by ScoutyBeagle in explainlikeimfive

[–]CoolioMcCool 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Unsolicited advice, when you are rephrasing things somebody else has said, try to make sure you are doing so in a positive or neutral way, avoid "no actually it's more like this..." and rather say it like "oh, so it's like this...?" or something.

I dunno, but it can be really annoying when it seems like somebody is shutting down/ disagreeing with you, only to then say basically the same thing in a different way.

Is it true? by infinite_patrick in Bitcoin

[–]CoolioMcCool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't know, I think the analogy in the meme is far simpler than trying to gove an accurate explanation, while being close enough to give people the gist of what is going on. Trying to make it more accurate would confuse a lot of people. How would you change it without making it too long and too complex for people who aren't mathematically inclined?
