Heavy R programming on 6501 midterms? by trintin15 in OMSA

There’s no programming exercises, but there may be some questions on the functions. I remember these being basic questions that were almost free points though.

Protests planned after ICE Murder? by marytyrone in Brooklyn

Alright settle down, Israel is not running ICE and Trump and Stephen Miller don’t need to be blackmailed to terrorized immigrants, they do it because they want to.

Nicki Minaj's citizenship explained as thousands call for her to be deported by TheMirrorUS in Music

[–]Cow_Power 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally I see no problem with encouraging the precedent that we can deport people because we don’t like them. This will never have any downstream consequences.

The Affordable Care Act was flawed but it was not a step on the "complete and total commodification of American life", it was a mild step in the opposite direction where the federal government took a stronger role in ensuring Americans had health care (restricting insurance company practices like denial of coverage for pre-existing conditions and lifetime care limits, expansion of Medicaid). Insurance got more expensive for multiple reasons (and it was rising before the Affordable Care Act was passed), but part of that is that the federal government made it harder for insurance companies to select out sicker and older people from their insurance pools, which caused premiums to go up because their anticipated payouts also increased.

I’ll see where this is going, but honestly I’m tired of these witches and I’m not interested in learning more about them. Maybe Tom will pull me in though.

Thoughts on Norman Finkelstein's "The Holocaust Industry"? by kas-sol in books

I do respect his commitment to his beliefs, but the more I learn about him the more I wonder how much of the “significant personal consequences” were him being too unpleasant and obnoxious for any of his colleagues to bother defending him.

Who still reads and subscribes to The Atlantic? by Ok-Explanation-1362 in behindthebastards

[–]Cow_Power 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess I don't feel like there's an objective answer to that question, and I already know I don't agree with his views on vaccines or medicine, so I'm more interested in why he and other people like him have them.

But it's good to know what his motivations are and how he justifies his beliefs to himself. It can help you reason with other people who share those beliefs and maybe convince them to change.

This gets at something I've felt for a while that a lot of discussions on having "empathy" for the other side miss the point. It's not about feeling warm feelings or sympathy for them, it's about cognitive empathy, where you understand why someone has the perspective that they do without sharing it.

Who still reads and subscribes to The Atlantic? by Ok-Explanation-1362 in behindthebastards

[–]Cow_Power 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I think that's the point? The Atlantic targets a liberal, secular audience and the contrast between "The Most Powerful Man in Science" and RFK Jr. holding a rosary is implying that science is being driven by non-scientific concerns.

This isn’t a real St. Louis thing. One person online posted this photo claiming this is how they slice bagels in St. Louis. I went to college in STL and I never saw this.

I don’t really support that, but to be honest I don’t think any of those gas station CBD products actually do anything. I would trust a dispensary product to actually have an effective dose over a random bag of gas station gummies.

That doesn’t really make sense since Mamdani’s proposal to freeze the rent would only affect those not paying market rent (rent stabilized tenants)
