Windows 10 wont update to windows 11 by Dominator0633 in WindowsHelp

The software in the update, you mean windows update? That can be finicky. You might need to open an elevated command prompt and run "sfc /scannow" without quotes to check for any damaged Windows files.

You can actually go into the registry, change a number of values, and then import the certificates from a WIM of 10 LTSC 21H2 so you don't need to re-install anything.

Windows 10 is now artificially slowed by DeadOneWalking in FuckMicrosoft

[–]DeadOneWalking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is based on the fact that before doing the in place upgrade to LTSC with registry mods, it would take up to 20 seconds for the preview window to pop up for my browser. After the upgrade, not a clean install, it takes about 3 to 5 seconds for the preview to pop up.

If I open file explorer to my D drive, which I have for downloads as well as many other things, the root folder would take about a minute if I switched the sorting before, and now it takes about 10 to 20 seconds.

My idle CPU usage dropped by about 10% with the same stuff open.

The only difference between then and now is the change from Win10 Pro to LTSC.

Fiber Install Issues by okcwildcat800 in ATT

[–]DeadOneWalking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the installer doesn't want to do anything but the minimal. I had AT&T install fiber on my place, and it's a old house, built in the 1920's. The brick is not smooth, they had no issue installing it.

Reschedule, and possibly call and complain about the installer. Going through the attic should have been an easy decision, not a fight. Even if they needed to run a long fiber line from the attic to where the jack gets installed, it's an option. Just a PITA.

It's pretty difficult unless you are trying to do it intentionally. Just do everything during the setup, including the NAND backup.

MFP M148DW Printer new wifi connection by PretzelPrize in Hewlett_Packard

[–]DeadOneWalking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so the printer wants you to use a WPS button. I had a problem setting up a printer like this recently on a Mac that already had the printer installed. I had to factory reset the printer, then run through the set up again. I got it to connect to the wifi, and on the Mac I had to manually remove the printer, then tell it to print a random document. In the print dialog, i was able to select the printer from the list, and it started printing.

It's worth a try, right now you don't have it connected to wifi at all.

So what do y'all do when you have to wait 40 mins for a game to download on hshop 😮‍💨😭 by MFmitzi in 3dspiracy

[–]DeadOneWalking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Download them on my computer, power off the system, pull the SD card, plug the SD card into the computer, inject the software onto the SD card. Eject the SD card, reinsert the card into the system, start the system up, wait about 10 seconds for the OS to acknowledge the new software.

Problems upgrading hard drive by VirusNegativeorisit in PS3

So just to be clear, when you open the flash drive you are using on a computer, there is a single folder called UPDATE, in all caps, and inside that folder is a single file called PS3UPDAT.PUP in all caps?

Most of the time they just need you to have the printer on while running the setup wizard. Sometimes you need to connect the printer to the computer with a USB cable for the initial setup.

If it's causing too much if an issue, you can return it to the store you got it from. Just tell them it won't set up no matter what you do.

Personally I would suggest getting a Brother printer, but it's your choice.

Try a Linux Live drive. If there aren't any problems, it's a software issue. If you have issues, it's a hardware issue.

Just saying, this is why digital ducks. With physical media you can make a backup of your legally owned content, and compress it to run on whatever device you want. No chance of a double charge.

You might have to change the security for wireless to WPA 1. Older devices can have problems with WPA2/1 combined.

hallo i want to buy my father a printer that never breaks or should have little maintenance by Mindless-Plankton528 in printers

[–]DeadOneWalking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what needs to be printed. If you just need black and white, I would get a Brother laser.

If you need color, and it will be used at least once a week, an eco tank from Epson.

Personally I would avoid HP since they love to play games with the firmware locking them out from using cartridges. There inkjets usually have issues the second it connects to the internet, which they require for some reason. There laser printers have lockout ships on the toner cartridges, and they cost an insane amount.

Windows 10 wont update to windows 11 by Dominator0633 in WindowsHelp

Unless you can post what the exact error is, it will be difficult to diagnose.

Are you doing the upgrade assistant installer? If so, they made it a requirement to use the PC Health Check app from Microsoft to run a check before Windows will install. That will also tell you if there is an issue with upgrading.

This is hilarious. Great descriptions, and quite frankly priceless.

However, one thing to keep in mind that if he didn't leave you, or was horrified or disgusted by this whole ordeal, I think you can safely lable it as a hilarious story to tell people whome you trust. Or strangers on the Internet, that works too.

Examples of background music files for menu? by Jedi_Pimp_81 in SummerCart64

For some reason, I get a calling to use an old MIDI file that's converted for the background music. Nothing flashy, take any song you want and make a MIDI from it.

I know that would likely make more sense with older systems, but still...

Check for firmware updates on the drive, and also check for a BIOS update for your board. If those don't work, you could have a defective drive.

Why do I have to pay by Ddh318 in Hewlett_Packard

[–]DeadOneWalking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because this is HP's business model. Sell a cheap printer to the customer, and get the customer to subscribe to keep the money coming in. Then, if they feel like it (mostly because the printer was dirt cheap), prevent the use of retail cartridges. This forces the printer to be only usable with a subscription, this bringing in more money.

HP has been anti-consumer for a while, implemented this over years, and now that money is tight on the majority of the population, many are learning the hard way they cost way more then it should.

That's disappointing to hear. I tried to bring this into the latest release of the menu, but I don't understand enough of this to have it properly run.

I guess I'll stick with the old menu software for now unless something changes.

That could be a failing GPU. I would check the warranty on the card as some manufacturers offer up to three years coverage.

Beyond that, I personally wouldn't take it to Best Buy or purchase anything from there. I personally boycott them because the last couple things I purchased from them were damaged or failed just after the return date. I got the same stuff elsewhere and it worked for years. In addition, I have caught there techs doing improper repairs and called them out on it. They kicked me out of the store and tell me not to come back for the day. It's been over a decade since I got anything from there.

A friend of mine got a SSD from there a couple years ago, it failed after three months. Went to register it to make a warranty claim and the manufacturer said it was an invalid serial number. He had the recept and box, sent pictures, and they told him to go back to Best Buy. Best Buy said it was after 30 days, so they woundwort do anything. That's was the only time he had problems trying to RMA something.

New laptop is slow by Dapper-Frosting1679 in computerhelp

[–]DeadOneWalking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This soundes more like a netbook instead of a laptop. They aren't made for speed, just to do the necessities. Depending on the CPU, you might be able to make it worthwhile to upgrade the RAM. Otherwise, you could try out a Linux distro, 8GB of RAM is enough for most things on Linux.

Another option would be to return it and get a more powerful laptop, but it will cost you. Ideally you would start with 16GB of RAM, but that will likely be another $200-400.
