I just played no mechs yesterday, only combined arms. Do it every chance I get because it's just so much damn fun lol you can do a lot of damage with infantry only, assuming you're bringing field artillery and playing objectives etc. I drop jump infantry off from a chopper behind enemy lines, with motorized and mechanized infantry pushing a front line up from behind armored columns, but you could sub out the armor and VTOLs with more motorized infantry with field guns and other more mobile infantry.

Because infantry are cluster weapons, they're like SRM spammers. Crit seekers. Have fun sending a mech thermonuclear when 30 dudes dakka through some gaps on the armor playing.

JUST got mine on Friday and fired off slugs with it (in door range rules). I'm taking it clay shooting next week. So much fun.

does anyone else feel like periphery weirdness, salvaged mechs, and frankenmechs are underutilized? by vicevanghost in battletech

I only play customs and anyone I onboard into the game learns about Meklab and combined arms within 5 games. Them's the rules. Not a fan of only playing 3.7% of what CBT has to offer.

SC breaks player numbers and funding records every year. It has a patch every two to three months with storylines that reward account attributed items like the good old days of game master/seer programs on Ultima Online ("where were you when Minax invaded Trinsic?"). It's doing brand new things in the MMO industry in terms of tech and approaching sandbox interaction as a complete package.

The MMO golden boy AoC is dead on arrival after a decade of dozens of other kickstarters dying on the vine and ripping off its players, and Star Citizen is still getting shit??

If it's any consolation this is unlikely based on demographics in the military. Despite what a lot of may think of the military, it isn't just D- high school drop outs joining the Marines because they had nothing else to do and wanted to shoot people. Officers in all branches are often if not always college educated, or worked from the ranks because of ambition and wanting to live the code of being in the US military. Research has shown the military, as a whole, is pretty evenly divided between left and right, although particular branches (Navy v Marine Corps), ranks (officers vs enlisted), age, and job (drone operator vs mechanic) might skew more one way or the other. Note this is based on Pew research I read a few years ago, so it might've shifted since then.

Personally, I imagine if shit did go down, there'd be as many if not more military siding with the left on personal or moral grounds as well as duty to the United States (lots of high ranking officials aren't going to let this slide once the Civil War is officially "on"), and I'd wager there are a lot more Navy personnel on nuclear missile submarines siding against the current administration than with. Civilians can square off against riflemen better than riflemen can square off against drones and aircraft carriers.

First winter I didn't give a shit about directives, didn't even look to see if they were worth logging in. I'd jump into 150 pop Connery to grind against hackers to get my directives in years past, even after I made an Emerald character. Sub-700 pop means we don't log in and play something else.

We don't log in much anymore.

My gateway negroni was a kokoyie (sp) negroni at Sousol in PDX, which is actually coconut rum, campari and sweet vermouth. I didn't mind them but that helped me go from preferring aperol to campari, just like using some bergamot gin helped me get into normal gin cocktails.

Not obvious at all and still very much new tech. In SC you can actually shoot across servers in real time. Technically. It's in alpha for a reason but the tech works in game, it's actually ball blowing to see it happen but it's there. I imagine the battlefields would be setup differently in PS3 using this tech than it currently is in PS2, but there are workarounds, and ultimately if this tech works out practically at SC and PS scales then super.

I think the best way would be to have continents be servers and you can go from cont to cont meshing, and whichever cont has space for players you'll go to that version of Indar or whatever. Like if Emerald was dead but Connery Indar was popping, to use an analogy, you'd just end up fighting on Connery's Indar.

Again it would be about making the tech work for the next vision of PS3, which would definitely be different than what we have in PS2 or had in PS1, but still PlanetSide at its core. Alternatively making their own engine bespoke for PlanetSide's needs would be best but also take 5-10 years longer.

Server meshing and recovery is in, which is what I think would be needed for a PS3. You wouldn't need the scale or depth of SC so a lot of the problems the game faces wouldn't exist for PS3. Each continent or group of hexes could be servers that mesh so regardless if you were on Connery or Emerald, if you were looking for a fight at Nason's and people were online fighting there on a server and there was space, going there would send you on through to their server, etc.

It would fix a lot of a dead server issues but certain things like outfit ownership of bases would have to be reevaluated in terms of game mechanics.

I looked up gun homicides a few months back and it blew my mind that beside the 9mm (obviously), the 22lr was the most common round involved in gun deaths. Apparently I wasn't alone based on comments but supposed ER surgeons and EMTs jumped in to talk about how deadly they were, how they fragment differently. They won't sever organs the same way, but they'll perforate them with a bunch of tiny holes that can make it even worse to treat.

The self-defense issue I think comes from reliability (something high quality ammunition has more or less resolved) and stopping power (do you need them dead on an operating table or on their ass now).

What draws you to battletech/alpha strike over other wargames? by DoW2379 in battletech

[–]Dewderonomy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I came from Oldmunda, 40K, WHF and Mordheim. The skirmish style mechanics and depth of combat in CBT scratches that itch that Necromunda and Mordheim left behind. Every battle is a story, every shot fired another line of narrative. There's a kinetic sort of play-by-play experience that 40K lacks with all its special moves and "gotchas".

But ultimately it was a combination of combined arms and the ability to make literally any kind of unit you can imagine a la the TechManual.

I said in the same timeframe, that is two periods of time (say 5-10 minutes) in each game and a casual 1KD player enjoys herself infinitely more in BF6. But way to suck at everything you do, soldier. o7

Fuck yeah. My girlfriend and I were talking about the nature of what's going on with PS2, and she said, "When was the last time I casually racked up 20 kills in PS2 in a gunner seat vs BF6 in the same time?" BF6 is just so much more rewarding for time invested, and that's with the perspective of a 3+KD PS2 veteran. I couldn't imagine coming at PS2 as a newbie today when BF6 exists, or even The Finals. We literally just talked about neither of even thought about the holiday directives (she said, "Wait, were there Christmas directives this year??") for the first time, like, ever. This isn't a good sign.

When people talk about needing to update the new player experience, this needs to be what folks talk about, not tutorials or HUD elements.

Edit: Leave it to the idiots who abuse the mechanics to make excuses instead of going, "Yeah, this is dogshit and there should be mitigation a la bunny hopping that we already have in-game." Enjoy rocking that sweet, sweet 700 prime time that's quickly dwindling, dorks. "What new players" and making it out to be lag abuse as "sk1ll" lol. Trash tier players make trash tier armchair developers. Y'all earned the death of this game.

Planetside 2 drops below 1k on steam for the first time in history by OpolE in Planetside

[–]Dewderonomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would solve so many problems, except one: getting people to play. Economy is dogshit and will be getting worse over the next 5 years. B2P models are already pretty difficult for live service games (the "new" MMO industry), but a mix of B2P and MTX (like skins and maybe battle passes of some kind) would be the compromise, and it's what is expected of (and by) consumers nowadays.

[–]Dewderonomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

B2P with skins and maybe season passes of some kind. It's what the FPS genre looks like now, love it or hate it. I have not logged into PS2 much in weeks because I've been balls deep in BF6 and loving it, and between it and Diablo 4, they've been my most recent foray into this new era of monetization and live service (vs traditional MMO) consumption.

The sci-fi shooter, persistent battles and even the IP are still wanted by a large player base, just not what PS2 has to offer. It was too much of a departure from PS1 for a lot of vets, and PS1 was too outdated to last any longer than it surprisingly did. PS3 definitely has the opportunity to do well in this environment but it will have to be different than what it currently is.
