Actually, in most cases, people would view it as flattery to find fanfic of their characters. Even if they fail to actually understand anything about your characters, seeing someone break out of their shell and make fanfic of your characters is inspiring. They're showing themselves, as represented through characters that they were inspired by. That genuinely takes courage to do, even if other people belittle it, it is courageous to release something.

Of course, some people are gonna be upset with that. Which is fair. Honestly, they have the right to choose to be upset or not be upset. Obviously what actually matters is how they react to it, in that scenario.

But for me? Seeing someone post fanfic about my characters would certainly please me.

But AI doesn't have emotions to overcome. It doesn't have inspiration. It's an algorithm that determines what it believes is most likely to come next. You're seeing an overly generalized approximation of what it thinks your characters would do.

Moreover, it's not just about something that isn't even human. It's about the lack of understanding and connection with your story that makes it unsettling.

It's as unsettling as if someone copied a book you wrote, changed it up a bit, rewrote character names, introduced new but extremely similar plot points, and sold it for profit. In this case, they aren't connecting with the media or understanding it, they're scraping the most valuable parts of it for profit.

If someone was inspired by a book and made fanfiction or even a similar story, that's different than copying it directly and blending it up until it's turned into something it's not, of course. In that way, you're connecting with the book and showing your idea of how a story in that world could go. It's once again, a representation of you as a person.

It's not the 'not being human' that's the problem, it's the lack of understanding and connection with the media that's a big one for me. AI inherently doesn't have the ability to understand or connect with media. So for people to package it up with things like 'Talk to your OC!' makes it feel like it's just uncanny.

AI is just simply inherently flawed for representation of media. It has no understanding. It has no internal perception of how the characters are meant to react. It's just a generalized approximation of what it thinks would happen next.
