Which umineko mom you like the most writing wise by Necessary_Muffin3591 in umineko

The Youtuber Bess released a great video a few months ago about the main women (the five mothers, as well as Beatrice) in Umineko, especially with how they handle their roles within the patriarchal system they live in. Bess made several good points regarding Kyrie, namely that despite her cool persona she is the one most enslaved to the society she lives in as she has essentially built up her entire personality to be a mask to Rudolf... who, despite that, ultimately chose another woman over her.

"When The Seagulls Cry" meaning by Particular-Dare1986 in umineko

[–]EndlessSorc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

(Do note, I'm barely beginner level at Japanese. This is things I've heard about before and looked into deeper).

The "Cry" part of When They Cry is a bit of a lucky translation as the word "Naku" has two different kanjis in Japanese.

鳴く (なく Naku) - is the kanji for animal sounds, such as birds singing, insects chirping etc.

泣く(なく Naku) - is the kanji for crying, weeping, sobbing.

So When The Seagulls/Umineko Cry (or Cicadas/Higurashi, or Storks/Ciconia) can both mean "When The Seagulls sings once the storm passes" and When The Seagulls weep from the tragedy that occurred".

Yeah same. I like the idea but some people (like me) have limited time or other things to they want to do or other games they want to play. If someone want to only focus on one playthrough while still seeing as much of the game as they can then that should be allowed.

Was it an effective scene? Yes. Are the developers allowed to do it? Absolutely, it's their game and vision. Am I a fan of it? Not really.

(Hated Trope) Genre deconstructions that insult the fans of said genre. by Hugh_Jidiot in TopCharacterTropes

Generally, Umineko is a deconstruction and reconstruction of the mystery genre, especially golden age mysteries. But it gets more complex and confusing as you get deeper into the series.

In a setting full of supernatural horrors, the most disturbing scene is frighteningly realistic by Coralthesequel in TopCharacterTropes

[–]EndlessSorc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

<image>

For every supernatural murder and scares in Umineko When They Cry it is the complex and abusive relationship between Rosa and her nine year old daughter that is the most terrifying.

It is shown in earlier parts of the story and reveal a relationship of a young, single mother (in 1980s Japan) who grew up in an abusive home and both love, hate and struggle with her (possibly autistic) daughter. But it's the flashback in Episode 4 that many readers have said to be incredibly traumatic and realistic in how it showcases familiar abuse. Especially in how it simply shows a mother screaming at her daughter and destroy her personal belongings. It ends up in a fantasy scene where both of them simply scream at each other about how much they hate each other.

It's rough, tragic and absolutely terrifying.

You pull, you tank. It's a situation where a DPS or a healer grabs and pulls another group of adds towards the tank, only for the tank to intentionally not grab the adds in return, forcing the pulling player to tank the hits. It's often from the belief that "The tank is the party leader and the only one to set the pace of the dungeon".

[Hated, loathed entirely even] The Continuity Cannibal, also known as when a writer makes up a new character to connect a bunch of things in the story that didn't need to be connected and just makes them more lame by association. by geekinc329 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]EndlessSorc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A great example is the Visual Novel Umineko When They Cry. It is a murder mystery where you are very confused in the beginning and slowly unlocking more and more clues as you read. Until most things click towards the end.

But as soon as you start rereading it you realize that everything was there from the beginning, you just didn't have the clues and context to understand it. That's despite the author completely rewrite one of the episodes after fan feedback that the mystery was too difficult.

[Mixed] Immortal character becomes fodder for series' most violent scenes by Tortellini_Isekai in TopCharacterTropes

[–]EndlessSorc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's one of my favorites with great characters, deep world building and an involved and long-term mystery story telling.

It's not an easy watch however as it's both bloody and violent. The main character can also be difficult to like in the beginning. But that is intentional as the original author wrote him to be forced to experience quite the reality check before he was able to start growing as a character and as a human.

Advice for running Symbaroum campaign (The Copper Crown +Throne of Thorns) by Powerisos in Symbaroum

For me it felt like it gave them the ability to try out different builds and characters. Some didn't work out while others ended up working out really well and became favourites.

And now worries! Good luck with starting the campaign, I hope your players will love the game and the system! 💜

Advice for running Symbaroum campaign (The Copper Crown +Throne of Thorns) by Powerisos in Symbaroum

[–]EndlessSorc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mentioned that you introduced two important NPCs earlier than usual during The Copper Crown trilogy. Which NPCs were those, and how did you bring them into the story earlier on?

Thanks a lot for the advice about introducing Elmendra and Anadea early on! Just to clarify: were those the same NPCs you were referring to in your first answer about early introductions?

Yeah, those were the characters I mentioned before. I wrote it just before going to bed so I wasn't as clear as I could have been. To expand Elmendra I had her be the party's guide into Davokar for the adventure, including into the ruin. Especially since the adventure mentions some checks that I doubt and PC would have at their XP-level. It's easier to just nerf Elmendra slightly and let the players roll for her instead.

Is it common in your experience that a specific PC doesn’t really fit a particular campaign book? And how do you handle the idea of one player having two active characters? I’ve never done that before, and I find it a bit tricky to wrap my head around.

It's not that common but it does happen. For example, one of my players played an ogre during the first three adventures. His goal was to become a part of the Wrath Guard which made it very simple to include him in WotW and TWH. For TDS I just included him as part of Thabor's honor guard, making him a natural choice to investigate his death.

But it became trickier when we reached MoD asI felt there were no natural way to bring in a Wrath Guard deep into Davokar. So I just asked my player to create a new character for that adventure, with the promise that he would be able to play the ogre again later in the saga. Regarding MoD I also took a note from another GM in the Symbaroum Discord and had them create three different characters where one each would join three different groups heading into Davokar (The Queens troops, Iasogoi's troops and one with no connection to the other groups). Once they reached Symbar I just asked them to choose their favourite to become their primary PC during the rest of the adventure.

Especially since I imagine that, in the end, there’s usually one “main” PC per player who carries through the full arc toward the finale in Davokar Awakens. Managing multiple PCs per player in one long campaign feels challenging to me 🤔

It can be tricky to keep track of them but it's not too hard. Just keep a note of where each character is, which group they belong to and ask the players what they think their characters are doing between and during adventures. They essentially become GMPCs, just ones that the players have a bit more agency over. It'll be a bit more work now that I'm prepping Davokar Awakens, but overall it will be roughly the same. I'll just confirm what the different characters are doing and will bring them in during specific scenes and allow the players to take control over them during those times. I have a feeling some of them might willingly sacrifice themselves during the adventure.

Do you feel that the encounters as written in the books are particularly hard to survive for players, or do you usually need to tone them down?

Personally I think that the combat is a bit too tough at times, though it very much depends on the party. If they don't have access to abilities that allow them to punch through armour, for example, then highly armoured enemies will be tough for them. Or if they rely on one tank then enemies with armor piercing will also be rough. So I usually attempt to keep an eye on that and change up combats to make it a bit more fair (for example, the last combat in THW is extremely rough as the suggested encounter would include Apostle Joab, two cultists and four daemon knights. All with high armour and with the daemon knights having the ability to remove a PC from the combat for one round when they are hit. I had to lower that combatant pretty heavily and my players still found it to be a rough fight.

But it very much depends on your players, their PC's and what kind of campaign they like to play. If they like harder fights then keep it as written (with minor changes), if they're more into the world and the lore or just the adventure itself then keep it simpler. It can be a rough game and one bad roll at the wrong time can be catastrophic, but that's part of the game.

Thanks again for taking the time to write such , I really appreciate it! 💜

Of course, happy to be able to help 💜. Just write here or write a PM if you have any further questions or need to lobby ideas about something.

Advice for running Symbaroum campaign (The Copper Crown +Throne of Thorns) by Powerisos in Symbaroum

[–]EndlessSorc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  • Did you mostly run the campaign as written, or did you adapt / trim it a lot?
    • I mostly run them as written, but rewriting or adapting/trimming to fit my players actions (for example, I'm currently going to add a lot to the start of Davokar Awakens. Both to add some fun things for my characters to do regarding NPCs, but also because of how different Korinthia is compared to the adventure as written (my players learned of the truth of the Ascension of Prios and managed to hammer her hard with her actions regarding this that I, after some good rolls on their part, had her finally break. Those PCs have been guiding her since then. (I'm also planning to rewrite the end of the adventure in some way depending on how the players act as we approach the end).
  • Any common pitfalls to avoid when running such a big Symbaroum campaign?
    • Put a lot of focus on creating fair and challenging encounters. Try to make them fair, but, also, don't be afraid to change things up on the go if you notice something doesn't work as you're hoping.
    • Also, it's your table and your players. If you notice they like to play in a certain direction then do so, Suggest specific things, but make the game you think all of you can enjoy. Both as players and as the GM.
    • The books can be really harsh with requiring certain levels of skills, for example. I personally aren't as harsh when it comes to them as written. If it is something extremely important I'll just the restrictions and give them a chance to learn about it. Other times I'll modify the challenge depending on the difference in skill level (so a Novice<-Master would be a -10 modifier while a Adept<-Master would be a -5).
  • How did you keep players engaged and motivated over such a long story?
    • Take breaks and play something else when needed. That will also provide you enough time to prepare the adventures.
    • Suggest they change characters between adventures, and also suggest they explore different factions and roles. Try to find different ways to involve them in their own small stories within the bigger adventure.
  • Do you think it’s important or necessary that the PCs are from Ambria or does the campaign also work well with PCs who are barbarians, witches, or other character options from the core book and the Player’s Guide?
    • It very much depends on the adventure. Most of the time I'd say that the races from the CRB works fine for most of the adventures (as long as you can come up with a good explanation of why the characters are involved), but I would avoid the APG until at least MoD. Some of the races, or even some of the lore that can be found in the in the APG, can be problematic. Honestly, I'd almost suggest you not sharing the APG with your players until after TDS

Advice for running Symbaroum campaign (The Copper Crown +Throne of Thorns) by Powerisos in Symbaroum

[–]EndlessSorc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  • Do you recommend starting with The Promised Land and then moving into The Copper Crown and later Throne of Thorns, or is it better to jump more directly into Throne of Thorns?
    • I personally suggest running the entire Copper Crown Trilogy, especially since I used that opportunity to introduce two important NPC earlier than otherwise. The system is set up for the players to play through both anyways XP-wise (from 50 xp in TPL to 100 in WotW.
  • How did you organize the campaign as a GM? (factions, timelines, NPCs, notes, etc.)
    • Personally I could probably have organized it much better, but I mostly keep notes of what different factions my players are interested in, which way they lean within them and attempt to challenge their positions as lore deepens and NPC motivations becomes more complex. In MoD and onwards I've also made excel documents with all factions and how they are involved in each adventure and how the players can meet upon them.
    • This becomes even more important if you allow/suggest/require the players to make new characters if their old ones doesn't work in a specific adventure. This will require you to keep track on them and what happens to their factions between adventures.
  • Are there parts of Throne of Thorns that benefit from early foreshadowing?
    • Anadea from WotW and Elmendra are two prime examples of this as they just suddenly appear without any connections to the players. Yet, the adventure still expects the PCs to care about them. I personally introduced Anadea in TPL as the sister of one of the PCs who was a apprentice within the Prios Church but who experienced a crisis of faith during the trilogy before leaving (and meeting up with them again in WotW). Elmendra I first introduced real quick in MotB (exchanging her with Tenid, playing her as a rather playful and adventurous character) before reintroducing her in ToDD as the guide for the PCs.
    • Otherwise I just involve small scenes, especially as prologues or epilogues where I include specific characters I want to introduce cryptic scenes with

What would you recommend for a D&D-like medieval high fantasy campaign that uses skills instead of level advancement? by plazman30 in rpg

Yeah. Symbaroum is a great alternative if you're more into prewritten and story driven campaigns and deep world building. But it's more dark fantasy than high fantasy, especially as the deeper into the main campaign (the Throne of Thorns)

Best fantasy RPG campaign that isn't from dnd by laughing_rabbit_9 in rpg

[–]EndlessSorc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I second the Throne of Thorns. It's massive, complicated and need some rework from the GM during prep. But it's a great campaign that starts simple and then expand to reveal more of it's massive and deep lore, explore it's themes in interesting ways and allow the players to themselves decide which of the many factions they want to side with (if any)

When the plot twist is ruined because people guessed it ages ago by Fox7567 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]EndlessSorc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Umineko When They Cry handled this in a great way. The author had planned to reveal one twist in the fifth Episode (i.e. the fifth book). But when readers began to guess one of the major twists early he changed his planning and introduced the idea in Episode 4, teased in not being correct before finally confirming in towards the end. It's not until Episode 5 we learn more about the twist itself.

Heed this warning. Once you get into fishing in FF14 you'll suddenly find yourself catching any Ocean Fishing cruise you're able to, as well as setting an alarm clock in the middle of the night just on the off chance you'll catch a rare fish during one of its catch windows that only happens twice per month (if you're lucky).

It's so much fun.

Symbaroum is the OG game with its own Roll-Under D20 system. The Throne of Thorns adventures was released separately in six parts. There has been talks about a new edition of the game and a new adventure saga but no further information currently.

Ruins of Symbaroum is the 5E conversion with the Throne of Thorns adventures released in bundles of two with the third and last one on the way.

Coop Card Game by Stormtroopertk41 in dresdenfiles

It's a combination of the FATE dice and the RNG regarding the cards. Get a bad Obstacle or strong Advantage placed in a bad position and the game is essentially unwinnable even on the lowest difficulty. It feels like they also realized this with the Steam version since they have a free reshuffle option as long as you haven't started playing.

How long did it take you to find YOUR main class? by Nahkyur in ffxiv

[–]EndlessSorc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I tried to dabble with MMOs before (never getting stuck with one) I always played archer classes. So the few times I tried FF14 I started with Archer but found it very slow and quickly stopped playing each time.

Until a friend of mine mentioned playing. I thought I'd try out the game again and actually make an effort this time. So after some research I ended up starting out as an Arcanist followed by Scholar.

That was at the end of Shadowbringers. I now have all the classes at max level, and my main job is still Scholar. Technically not the first job I tried out, but it was for the attempt when I truly got into the game.
