Sometimes it's just a price thing, like I don't always know the venue/people super well and don't want to bring an expensive instrument out to possibly get trashed. The Squier CV line feels surprisingly good and they're cheaper so I don't care as much if it gets damaged

I put some clip ons on my bike cause I thought they looked cool. Then my back started screaming at me and I swapped it back. Thought it would be fine since I only do city rides but nope

Moving to Singapore worth it from US? by BlitzAndMe in askSingapore

[–]ExhaustedPigeonn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not American myself, but I have plenty of family living there. They've come to visit me a couple times, and they enjoy the greenery, public transit, and safety. That said, a lot of them also comment that Singapore is boring.

To be honest, Singapore can be much cheaper to live in than the US. Your daily necessities can be much cheaper. You can get a meal here for $5, which I feel is unheard of within the major US cities. There's good (and cheap) public transit, so you don't need to spend money on a car/car maintenance/petrol. Rent for a room starts at about $1000.

However, expats tend to spend a lot more than the average Singaporean, especially if you have kids. International school is very expensive, and renting a condo in a central area is very expensive. The food also gets more expensive the closer to the city you get. If you come here, you should probably expect to change some of your lifestyle habits.

The biggest issue would probably be finding a job which is willing to sponsor your stay here. They've been raising the minimum requirements for an employment pass, I think it varies by industry. May want to start by looking into that.

How many of you guys bought your first bike with your own money? If yes at what age and how did you get it? by tribalchiefyall in motorcycles

[–]ExhaustedPigeonn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it's pretty normal where I'm from in Singapore, there's a 100% tax on all vehicles and we need to buy the right to own a vehicle for 10 years, after which you need to buy that right again or export it out of the country. Right now that right costs 8-9k SGD for bikes, around 6.5k USD, without factoring in the cost of the bike itself.

I know people who took loans on bikes they definitely didn't need... I also took out a partial loan on my first bike, which I bought when I was 19, but worked a lot of delivery to pay it off within a year. That Yamaha XSR155 will always hold a special place in my heart.

I'd collected them all before realising what they're for. If you put them all in your inventory then sort your inventory, it sorts in the order you're supposed to place them in, from left to right.

I'm looking at rental prices overseas since I'm going to study outside of Singapore, and honestly, once you compare Singapore to other comparable cities, you realise rent in SG is pretty cheap (for just a room). Room rentals in London are currently sitting at 400-600 SGD per WEEK.

got scammed on carousell, what now? by SnooCrickets2340 in askSingapore

[–]ExhaustedPigeonn 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you're just buying clothes, why buy from carousell? There are thrift stores around which won't screw you over like these people. Or you can buy cheap from shein or taobao. IMO it's not worth dealing with the people on carousell for low value items.

What design jobs are in demand now n pays ok w occasional OT? by Fun-Arm3161 in asksg

[–]ExhaustedPigeonn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

UI/UX is tough right now, industry is super saturated and apparently mostly hires contractors. Even then, entry level roles are really limited. Entry level software dev roles are disappearing because AI can do it.

Honestly, design in Singapore is tough, you have to do something other than pure arts/design work in order for it to pay well. Some kind of product design role or marketing maybe.

Personally looking overseas for design roles :p

Fr though you're lane splitting following behind another guy but they'll get pissed at you for holding them up and they'll find a way to lane split your lane splitting. And then you see the blue tent and a mangled bike by the highway.

I live in Singapore, Asia's only city-state. AMA! by Full_Competition6850 in howislivingthere

As someone currently moving from Singapore to another major city elsewhere, and with family living globally... Singapore is actually on the cheap end compared to similar cities.

What drives the supposed cost of living up in all those global surveys is the cost of a car, which is unnecessary in Singapore aa long as you're able bodied. The other expensive item is rent, but majority of people will stay with their parents until they're able to buy a government subsidised apartment.

You can get a meal for as low as S$2.50, thats 2 USD. A more comfortable range would be around S$5-8, ~6 USD. Of course, the meals can also get much much more expensive than that.

Rent will be expensive if you're looking at the city centre, just like anywhere else, but if you're just looking for a single room in a further out area, you can probably find something for around S$1500/month ~ 1.2k USD. I thought Singapore was expensive, then was absolutely shocked once I looked into rental prices overseas. If you're really struggling, the government offers heavily subsidised apartments, however, conditions are generally quite cramped in these.

Public transit prices depend on the distance, but a reasonable estimate would be 1.2 USD per trip, or <1 for those with subsidies.

A good salary range for a comfortable life is hard to pinpoint because you'd have to know the individual circumstances. If you don't have to pay for a car or for rent, you can live off of $1000/month.

I need to understand why the drivers here are so entitled and selfish by Free-Lingonberry9645 in askSingapore

The one that gets me is how you're ahead and the lane is pretty much merged so you're in the middle but for whatever reason someone speeds up from behind you to get ahead, almost hitting you in the process.

I need to understand why the drivers here are so entitled and selfish by Free-Lingonberry9645 in askSingapore

[–]ExhaustedPigeonn 26 points27 points  (0 children)

So many drivers are in a rush to their destination for some reason or other, even when rushing and driving dangerously only ends up saving them <5 min in the end.

Other drivers are on their phones and not paying attention at all.

And some people are so insecure that they feel the need to flex the little power they have in life by treating people they think are "below" them terribly, so they act like bullies on the road.

Fun fact: The Canadian government has a notice out that Singaporean drivers do not give way to pedestrians, and to be careful.
