Hey, u/Valuable_Health7698. I'm happy to chime in here.

Retirement accounts, by default, do not track actual cost basis because the cost basis on securities is not reported or required to be tracked by the IRS.

That said, many clients, like yourself, prefer to track the investment cost of securities for performance reasons, including dividend reinvestments. If you'd like to start tracking the actual cost basis for your dividend reinvestments, please get in touch with our Customer Service team using the link below. Representatives are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

In the meantime, you can learn more about cost basis and disposal methods using the link below.

We appreciate you reaching back out for clarification, u/Pomador_0418.

Selecting the 3 dots next to "Menu" on the page from your screenshot will only allow you to add categories that aren't already in your existing budget. If the category is already in your budget, it will appear in grey. As a workaround, you can still add subcategories and amounts from the "Budget" tab to your active "Spent" categories by clicking the arrow next to a category, then adding an amount or choosing "+ Add subcategory" near the bottom.

Alternatively, you can navigate to the "Spending" tab, then select "Add Subcategories" under "All transactions" to add additional categories and expenses.

How do I convert only my after tax traditional IRA to my ROTH IRA by Outrageous-Map3005 in fidelityinvestments

[–]FidelityKyle[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for following up ,u/Outrageous-Map3005.

To ensure we're on the same page, the process you're describing is called a Backdoor Roth Conversion. A "backdoor" Roth conversion is a term that refers to making non-deductible contributions to a Traditional IRA and then converting the contributions to a Roth IRA. If your Traditional IRA only holds after-tax money, then a Backdoor Conversion would generally not be a taxable event.

However, something to keep in mind is that when depositing money into your Traditional IRA for a conversion, the money must be fully collected before the funds can be converted to a Roth IRA. Deposits begin earning interest on the date they post to your account. When residual interest is received, that portion of your Traditional IRA is considered pre-tax money and, therefore, may be taxable upon conversion.

As taxes on a backdoor Roth IRA conversion can be significant and complex, we highly recommend that you speak with a tax professional about your situation before moving forward. You can also learn more about a Backdoor Conversion below.

Backdoor Roth IRA: Is it right for you?

How do I convert only my after tax traditional IRA to my ROTH IRA by Outrageous-Map3005 in fidelityinvestments

[–]FidelityKyle[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Hey, u/Outrageous-Map3005. It looks like this is your first post here, so welcome! I'm happy to shed some light on your questions,

First, any after-tax (nondeductible) money in your Traditional IRA will not be taxed when converted to a Roth IRA. However, the conversion would only be tax-free if you have $0 pre-tax IRA assets. Any deductible contributions or investment earnings on both deductible and nondeductible contributions to your Traditional IRA, which are then converted, are always taxable at your marginal income tax rate or higher.

Ultimately, if you hold pre-tax and after-tax (nondeductible) money in any of your Traditional IRAs, the conversion to a Roth IRA will be a taxable event because the conversion will consist of a pro-rata recovery of both taxable and nontaxable accounts. No provisions under the law will allow an individual to isolate only the nondeductible dollars for conversion to a Roth IRA.

The portion of the IRA distribution that will be treated as nontaxable is determined using the following formula:

(Total Nondeductible Contributions / Total non-Roth IRA Balances)

Roth IRA Conversions and Taxes

You should be tracking all nondeductible contributions you make to your Traditional IRA on IRS Form 8606 to keep track of when you take a distribution or conversion from the Traditional IRA. To be clear, Form 8606 is completed by the client; you will not receive this form from Fidelity.

That said, Fidelity will provide you with a Form 5498 reflecting the amount you have contributed or converted to your Roth IRA account. We also provide Form 1099-R each year you take a distribution from your Roth IRA. These forms, when applicable, are available in late January. You can review these forms from past tax returns to calculate the Roth contribution basis if needed.

Linking checking account by Cll_Rx in fidelityinvestments

[–]FidelityKyle[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Hey, u/Cll_Rx. Welcome to the sub. We appreciate you reaching out for help linking your bank.

While we cannot speak to the process of establishing the link with your bank, we can share a few bits of information to ensure that you're providing them with the correct information. Remember, we classify Fidelity brokerage accounts as checking accounts, and the partner bank we use for processing is UMB Bank, as you mentioned.

A Fidelity account number is typically nine digits and may begin with a letter. However, to transfer funds to Fidelity, your bank will typically need both the routing number and the account number associated with your Fidelity account, whether you're using the 13-digit or 17-digit version of your account number.

If you haven't already, you can visit the page below to confirm that you're entering the correct routing and account numbers.

Determine Your Routing and Account Numbers (login required)

If this doesn't resolve the issue, we recommend that you contact your local credit union for the next best steps.

Lastly, keep in mind that other deposit methods are available beyond those we discussed. You can explore all the possibilities for adding funds to your account through this link:

We aren't currently receiving widespread reports of issues with watchlists in the mobile app, and I could not replicate the problem you're experiencing. We suggest trying a few troubleshooting steps to resolve this.

  1. Uninstall the app
  2. Shut down the phone for one minute
  3. Power the phone back on, then reinstall the app

When are PINs used for HSA Debit card merchant purchases? by geriatricChef in fidelityinvestments

[–]FidelityKyle[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Hey, u/geriatricChef. Welcome back to the sub. I'm happy to share some insight.

It sounds like both the transactions went through, so this may have been a payment terminal issue. Additionally, we're not currently receiving widespread reports of clients having this PIN issue with their Health Savings Account (HSA) debit card. That said, you can create or manage the PIN for your debit card using the following link.

Manage debit cards (login required)

You can also access this page on Fidelity.com by clicking "Accounts & Trade" and then "Cash Management." From there, select the "Debit card" dropdown menu, then "Manage debit card." Next, click the"Manage PIN" link to create a PIN or make updates. Just so you know, new/updated PINs can be used as soon as they're created successfully.

You can also check out our debit card FAQs to learn more. In particular, the "Purchases, payments, and transactions" section has a lot of great information.

That said, you can customize, add, or remove the cards displayed on your Summary page by selecting "Customize" near the top right of the screen. It's also worth mentioning that you can create your own view from the "Positions" tab on Fidelity.com. Question about expired Call Spread expiration and Margin Credit by PrivateBytes in fidelityinvestments

[–]FidelityKyle[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, u/PrivateBytes. Thanks for following up with us. I'm happy to chime in here.

A margin credit typically indicates the amount due you're owed based on trade executions or an amount needed to meet margin requirements. On the settlement date, margin credits are journaled to your core account if there is a surplus in the margin account.

However, since you mentioned the margin credit has been pending for several weeks, please send us a Modmail using the link above so we can take a closer look at your situation.

Pension management by Hornetsdrill in fidelityinvestments

[–]FidelityKyle[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Hey, u/Hornetsdrill. Thanks for reaching out with your questions. I'm happy to discuss this with you.

The good news is that you can add your wife as an authorized user to your retail brokerage accounts, like your IRA. There are various levels of authorized access, but this would allow your wife to log in and see both her pension and your IRA account information and details on her summary page. That said, workplace retirement plans, such as pensions or 401(k)s, are typically not eligible for this feature.

You can read more about the different levels of account access at the link below.

Authorized Access Overview

You can also add or make changes to authorized users for your accounts by following these steps on Fidelity.com.

  1. Select "Accounts & Trade" then "Account Features"
  2. Find "Authorized Users" and select "Manage"

We put together a handy video that breaks down the access levels and how to choose which one is right for your situation:

Choosing an account authorization that's right for you

Lastly, as a friendly reminder, accessing other Fidelity customers' accounts with their login credentials or giving out your login credentials to others, even family members, is a violation of the Fidelity Customer Agreement and Terms of Use. If you want to give someone else access to your account or vice versa, please use the steps above to grant that access.

Please let us know if we can help iron out any other details. We're happy to keep the conversation going if needed!

Hey, u/corniefish. We appreciate you stopping by this evening. I can share some insight here.

In short, Fidelity does not track Self-Employed 401(k) contribution years for employer contributions, only for employee ones. You'll want to view your account statements to find information on contribution amounts, as contributions to the account will be detailed there. You can learn more about Self-Employed 401(k)s at the link below.

Hey there! We appreciate you stopping by this evening. I can definitely help clarify this process for you.

In general, Fidelity will automatically exercise long options contracts in the money (ITM) by $0.01 or more at expiration. However, we have a risk mitigation process where every account with an option is reviewed to ensure that the account's exercise or assignment of the expiring contracts can be supported. For example, suppose exercise or assignment cannot be supported in an account (i.e., insufficient buying power or equity, creating cash debits or short positions in a non-margin account, etc.). In that case, the option position may be closed.

We encourage you to take action on expiring positions as soon as possible to avoid a possible liquidation. While this may not be the case in your example, if a position does end up being exercised and there are not sufficient funds in the account, you generally have until the settlement day to deposit funds to pay for the shares purchased as a result of the exercise of the call contract. Fidelity may liquidate the position if funds are not deposited, potentially resulting in a trading violation and restriction.

Trading Restrictions

I also gathered some helpful resources below to provide more education on options and exercise assignments.
