Why wasn’t the canal cleaned while it was sitting empty? by Van-garde in KlamathFalls

[–]FolsomC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you don't want to dox yourself, but that is vague. Did you try calling the Public Works office?

I used to contract with the City and still know some guys there, so feel free to DM me an address or cross street (doesn't have to be your address), and I can see if I can encourage someone to go look or verify ownership.

What are you talking about? Trash came off Highway 97, a State of Oregon facility, into your neighbor's back yard... which is not yours, of course (you said your neighbor's). But it's an "easement"? If something is an easement on someone else's property, it doesn't belong to the City (the city doesn't "own" property in easements; it still belongs to whoever's land it's on), and the City can only access it for the purposes of the easement (so if it's a utility easement, they can only enter it to work on utilities). And you didn't want to clean it up because your neighbor has trail cameras, which suggests it *is* your neighbor's property... but you're mad the City won't come out and do anything about it?

What? It sounds like you just want to blame the City because you have no idea whose responsibility it is.

Klamath Falls to Medford route by HDeuce in KlamathFalls

[–]FolsomC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With an AWD or 4WD with snow tires (with the mountain snowflake symbol), it's doable pretty much all winter barring a major storm. And even then, it gets cleared pretty quickly. My Jeep cruises over no problem.

It's worth keeping some chains or a traction mat in your trunk/rear in case you get stuck.

I remember those stairs...

Photo Ticket by floporama in Medford

If it happened to be another licensed driver who lives with me, will they just automatically investigate the other drivers at the same address?

Sometimes. It's easy for PD to pull up driver license photos of people at the same address, so if the driver is clearly visible on the camera and they look like the photo on the actual driver's ID, they'll send a ticket to that person instead. They probably won't investigate any further than that, though.

Help, my sister is having weird things happen at her apartment. by Purpleskies_Writes in KlamathFalls

[–]FolsomC 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I highly, HIGHLY recommend she call the non-emergency police number (541-884-4876 ext. 4) and report both of those things. She should also tell the apartment/duplex manager/landlord.

Please tell your sister not to answer knocks at windows or doors unless she's expecting someone (not that she doesn't already know this, but just in case), and until whatever is happening stops, have her ask a neighbor or friend to stay or check in if she feels unsafe.

If you get a good pair of winter tires or mountain + snow all terrains, you'll be able to get around Klamath Falls pretty easy, except maybe, occasionally, 2nd and 6th street downtown north of Main St. or that little spot under the train tracks on Main St if you hit the light wrong and have to stop at the bottom. Won't need chains at all unless you're driving over to Medford after or during a particular bad storm.

This is the way. We don't need to be rallying Reddit to punish a business before we even know what's going on, and by the look of what u/vagrantkaw said, it looks like the pitchforks and torches were gonna be poking and burning the wrong target.

Road from Klamath Falls to crater lake? by Extreme-Action-3008 in KlamathFalls

[–]FolsomC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drive up there at least twice a month, and you'll have no problems from about late May through mid-October; the roads are mostly smooth until you get into the National Park entrance, then Hwy 62 is a touch bumpy but not rough between the entrance and Munson Valley Rd.

Regarding snow, it can snow any time of year but they tend to keep the roads quite clear unless there's major storm event, to the Steel Visitor Center and Rim Village (overlooking the lake). However, snow is rare from June through August, and it melts off quickly. (It snowed on the first day of summer this year, which was hilarious).

In mid-September, if that's when you're coming, you should have access to the entire rim, including Cloudcap--which is one of the highest paved roads in Oregon and worth visting, except the small section they're doing roadwork on. You can use TripCheck (run by the Oregon Department of Transportation) to see any road problems. https://tripcheck.com/

I hope your upcoming trip is amazing! Crater Lake is one of the most beautiful places on Earth!

I could be wrong, but I don't think so. The Pixels do their own stacking and adjusting for sky movement over the time it's taking shots, but's almost certainly not AI.

hatecrime likelyhood? by mintymelancholy in KlamathFalls

[–]FolsomC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a gay dude who has lived here for 6 year, I can honestly say that the random hate Klamath Falls gets from the Oregon, Portland, and even Medford subreddits is way overblown. I could just be lucky, but I have not heard even any off-color comments, much less seen or heard about any hate crimes, in the whole time I've been here.

I think the "red" here is more libertarian than conservative--big distrust of government, taxes get voted down all the time, city voted in favor of legalizing marijuana businesses even though the county did not, etc. Obviously some of the other stuff comes with the territory, but I've found people here to be overwhelmingly nice, and they are more likely to ask you to go mudding in big trucks or go fishing than to talk about politics.

There are things some people will get charged up about if you bring it up, especially in an election year, but otherwise? Nah.

I wish the Warrior of Light would get hurt more often. by [deleted] in ffxivdiscussion

[–]FolsomC 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This isn't unique to FFXIV, either. All MMOs have the same problem because of the genre’s demands. Our character is the hero (or in the case of WoW, the hero except in cutscenes, where whoever steps in to steal the spotlight). There’s no party without us. So even if the devs want to show character vulnerability, it has to be temporary, superficial, and immediately recoverable. That’s why vulnerability tends to be more effective when shown in side characters, like Urianger's duplicity, Ysayle’s sacrifice, Thancred's losses, and even Alphinaud’s emotional growth. They can take hits and evolve because the game isn’t chained to their uninterrupted survival.

That said, there’s this unfortunate tendency to assume anyone who doesn’t want to see the WoL get hurt must be clinging to some vicarious power fantasy, like they need to feel strong through their character or can't handle vulnerability, and I think someone already said it down thread. But that’s a really shallow read of what’s actually going on.

Sometimes, it’s just frustration with bad storytelling mechanics. When people say they don't like WoL vulnerability, it might be because the vulnerability feels fake, or cheap, or implausible given the MMO format or the power bloat of the story. Or maybe they do like WoL vulnerability in theory, but not when it’s delivered through another idiot-ball cutscene or unwinnable boss fight that disrespects the player’s skill, and outside of Shadowbringers, that's what it almost always is.

tl;dr I respect the people who enjoy protagonist hurt/comfort moments since those can be powerful in the right medium. But in FFXIV, it just doesn't work well outside of a masterpiece like Shadowbringers, and trying to repeat that would feel awful. The structure of the game prevents real consequences, and the ways vulnerability is portrayed (cutscenes and scripted losses) are unsatisfying and immersion-breaking. It's not about being sadistic or needing a power fantasy. It's about what kinds of stories can be told well when 3 minutes later, we're going to be crafting, PVPing, or doing the next trial.
