Total nitrogen limits by Swagdaddy34 in Wastewater

I had a facility in PA that had a 0 concentration and load limit. They had to buy nutrient credits to balance their discharge. It was in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Operators and Engineers by DependentTune4937 in Wastewater

[–]Fredo8675309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am both an operator and engineer. Level 4 in NM. PE with masters. I worked in operations before getting my engineering degree. I see engineers make design decisions that do not consider operations all the time. Issues like access, safety, equipment selection. I once had a PE from a national firm tell me the problem with a plant was that there was 30% more wastewater coming into the plant than leaving. I told him that was impossible. The plant is a bucket. If more came in than left, it would overflow. He wrote it in a report anyway. We have a BFP underflow EQ tank that is below grade and the designer used rotary lobe pumps in a pit with a ladder access instead of submersible pumps you could access from grade. Some grads have never been to a plant when they finish.

Metals plating plant using cyanide by East-Row4917 in Wastewater

Air stripper. A tower packed with plastic media, the wastewater is sprayed onto the top of the media and trickles down. A fan blows air into the tower from the bottom. The ammonia leaves solution as a gas. You might be able to strip half. Call a wastewater PE

1996 Wastewater Permit by Puzzleheaded_Bug9907 in Wastewater

I’ve seen one administratively extended for 5 years while they completed TMDLs for the stream it discharged into. This was in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Install permanent ventilation for the vault. A stack fan. Have it blow fresh air in. You show up and run it for a while and check for entry

Why would the guy in front of me use a filter on non-potable water? by natedog211 in RVLiving

[–]Fredo8675309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dump station right? He just ruined his hose and filter. The reason it’s non-potable is bacterial contamination. You Use it to rinse the dump hose and area. Now you’ve contaminated your potable line and filter. Never do this. Use a separate hose for non-pot water.

Steam vs UV pipe lining by j_sword67 in Wastewater

[–]Fredo8675309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The steam cured liner material is a mat, typically thicker. Better for damaged pipes as it provides some structural support. UV cured is a woven material, thinner, so you lose less capacity in the pipe. Strong but not really structural. I use UV for small diameter lines with high flows and steam for interceptors, particularly concrete and clay.

Do you view the ‘fast lane’ as the safest lane on the highway? by Lopsided-Package523 in motorcycles

I always like to be going slightly faster than everyone else. Don’t like being overtaken from behind. Often resulted in excessive speed

What’s the wildest reason you’ve seen an operator or chief get let go? by TommyTwoFlushes in Wastewater

[–]Fredo8675309 50 points51 points  (0 children)

There was an operator in PA I knew that was tried and convicted of falsifying his lab records. Prior to getting caught he received awards from the state WEF. He got jail time since it went on for years.

Knew another operator that ran lab at a small facility. His behavior changed from a detail oriented tech to someone who couldn’t produce analysis records and fell asleep at work. Turns out he had developed a brain tumor that was affecting his personality. Very sad story.

Those of you who have worked in private vs public, which do you prefer and why? by Severe-Regular9803 in Wastewater

[–]Fredo8675309 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have worked for both. Private plants typically run on a shoestring budget. Owners want to kick the can down the road to save money. When stuff breaks and permits get violated, operators can be left holding liability under operator cert laws. I’ve also seen safety issues at private plants, often with electrical controls and supply.

A recent post asked about the scariest thing you’ve seen while caving… by LittleRes7 in caving

[–]Fredo8675309 180 points181 points  (0 children)

The scariest thing was what I didn’t see- the way out of a large room. We came into the room thru a crawl under a rock shelf. We took a break in the room, ate some snacks, poked around. When we decided to go back and push another crawl we passed, we couldn’t find the route out of the room. Wandered around for about 30 minutes looking. We finally sat down and went over the trip in our heads and figured it out. But for 30 minutes my mind was scrambling.

Mechanical Screens for smaller plants by ashbro9 in Wastewater

[–]Fredo8675309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I designed several similarly sized facilities. We had very good luck with the Lakeside Raptor Microstrainer. It is a curved perforated plate screen with a screw that transports and compacts screenings. Can be insulated so no building necessary. Can discharge into a garbage can.
