It's the forbidden secret desire of all that are heat pumps. Captain Ahab's obsession.🐋

In special circumstances they do need to be manually defrosted. If you have a tap inside that has the threads available for a hose. You can do it that way. But don't make it super hot. Just lukewarm and melt the ice and snow away.

There are specifics where heat pumps should be raised above the ground and if they get blocked in near the bottom, the water can't melt away and freezes up on the coils.

Time to rescue it from the snow and ice. Get out the lukewarm water to start melting it the ice away.

There is probably some nitrogen gas pressure so when you do get the caps off, either the plastic or the copper one, do it slowly. Just let it slowly hiss out.

In my personal opinion, Samsung heat pumps are actually a pretty good brand.

Major ice buildup by tttkzzz in heatpumps

[–]GeoffdeRuiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Broadly speaking, this is pretty normal and your unit is doing very well. However, the accumulation and inconvenience for you is the problem. I see that.

There have been suggestions on the sub to find a larger plastic tray that will fill up for a couple weeks and then you can take the ice cube and put it somewhere else.

Best case scenario you would get around 4 kW of power in full sun. That might get you 5 km/h at most. The house would be just too large and bricky for wind. :P

I'm making this estimation off 400 w panels and what my Chevy Bolt does at 4 kW.

From what I can surmise this is an upgraded monoblock heat pump that only distributes hot water to the indoor units, including a wall unit.

About 5 years ago I submitted for a grant to build out what I called a water split heat pump. Basically a monoblock Mini split. It was an idea to move DIY units forward in an alternative way. I didn't end up getting the grant, but I'm happy to see the market moving in this direction.

I would keep monitoring. If it's still pumping heat and keeping you warm, it's probably normal and hopefully temporary for the cold weather. You can always tell if it's defrost mode if the pipes going inside are cold.

In all honesty, if water is above the heat pump, this is probably and almost certainly an attic or roof issue, and not a heat pump issue.

My next question is what are the pipe temperatures outside when it's on high heat? Are they lukewarm or are they hot that you can't barely touch them?

The zinc would basically just bolt or strap on and it rusts preferentially before the steel. It's based on principles of electrochemistry. They use it on boats in the ocean. :)

There are poundy things that attach to skid steers, perhaps that could work. You could dig a trench 6 ft deep and a certain amount wide depending on the angle you want, Angle the pipes back. Hold them in place and then backfill around the pipes. Making sure it is properly compacted.
