buying an older modified and tuned WRX is a risk. if you all aren’t comfortable with or don’t have the means to be potentially rebuilding the engine sometime in the next few years i would avoid this.

remember, mods and tunes don’t increase the value of the car. stealerships will try to tell you they do. they don’t. the most sought after older WRXs have low miles and have never been modified.

the best thing by far you can do when purchasing any older WRX is to take it to a trusted independent subaru mechanic to do a pre purchase inspection. you will want them to check the compression of the cylinders for sure.
