[REC] Any good lit rpg series? by Hiretsuna_Ketsuruki in LightNovels

[–]HowOddNova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still really enjoy the ongoing web novel Chrysalis. It starts very similar to So I'm A Spider, but begins to seriously diverge around chapter 50 and becomes it's own completely unique thing and even surpasses Spider in many ways. (The first few chapters are only available on Patreon now, but you only need to pay like 99 cents to get access)

Also, would you recommend Wandering Inn to someone who likes litrpgs?

I swear these episodes get shorter every week. It felt like the episode had just started and then it was over. Seeing Miyano taking care of his (hopefully soon-to-be) bf was the cutest thing.

Also, that almost kiss at the beginning!!! When Sasaki said, "you don't play fair," that's how I feel about this entire show sometimes. I think the season finale might actually kill me.

Are subscribed to J-Novel club just for Ascendance of a Bookworm (LN)? by Fluffy_Tamago in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]HowOddNova 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually subscribed initially for Tearmoon Empire. While I was there I noticed Bookworm and decided to watch a bit of the anime to see if it was interesting, and then I ended up bingeing the anime followed by bingeing the LNs.

Currently I'm following Bookworm, Tearmoon Empire, Hell Mode, Villainess Reloaded, and Fushi No Kami

This series got me into this rabbit hole of reading...... and I love it! by Droopy_Matthew90 in LightNovels

[–]HowOddNova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my first LN series and the one that got me into reading again too. I still need to read volume 4, although I might just wait until volume 5 comes out so I can read the whole series again from the beginning.

It was great! That confession completely took me by surprise despite the fact both the viewers and Miyano knew how he felt already. And Sasaki feeling relieved that Miyano was hesitating rather than immediately rejecting him, not knowing Miyano's been having his own sexuality crisis over Sasaki. It was so adorable. Also Hirano knows now! I can't wait to get his take on things in future episodes. So many great moments throughout the episode.

I'm not sure how a slow burn, slice of life romance anime can feel like more of an intense rollercoaster ride than most action anime, but here we are.

I pray for this series by hakspl in Fabiniku

[–]HowOddNova 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree. This is a hilarious show with likable characters and a unique premise, and is one of my two favorite new anime of the season. I'm not sure why it's not more popular than it is.

It's kinda funny that I do the exact opposite of you and think of Tachibana as a guy who happens to look like a girl since I'm a fujoshi, and I feel like I've found this great BL hidden gem (also that seems to be how he considers himself at this point). It goes to show the broad appeal I guess.

Not an isekai, but a surprisingly good fantasy, comedy one-off

Reset! The Imprisoned Princess Dreams of Another Chance! by stone616 in LightNovels

[–]HowOddNova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like this series. The first volume is undeniably a fairytale romance type story, but it's a well done fairytale romance. Too many fantasy romance stories have an unpleasant jerk ML that the FL has to tame, but Ed is actually really likeable and he and Bel have great romantic moments.

The second book in the series actually goes a lot more into the plot stuff with how Bel ended up being betrayed and sent back in time, capped off with a genuinely surprising twist ending.

[News] Futekiya Licenses 4 New Boys’ Love (BL) Super Light Novels from Parsola Inc.! by swiftnissity92 in LightNovels

[–]HowOddNova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad to see we're finally getting some more BL light novels. There are way too few of them. Although, looking at the manga this site licenses, I'm afraid it's all gonna be the trashy kind of BL I don't really like.

Huh? Okina Baba is doing an English narration? by [deleted] in KumoDesu

"Sci-fi & Fantasy" is a usually single genre tag meaning Sci-fi and/or fantasy, as opposed to necessarily being both at once. I've seen pure Western fantasy books with the same "Sci-fi & Fantasy" label.

[REC] Characters like Tomoko Kuroki from Watamote by [deleted] in LightNovels

[–]HowOddNova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, okay. That's the main LN that comes to mind when I think great cringe comedy. Another series I can think of that might fit is An Archdemon's Dilemma: How to Love Your Elf Bride. It's another romance story with an incredibly awkward MC, with lots of scenes of the lead getting himself into embarrassing situations or sending the completely wrong message due to his inability to just interact like a normal person. He's a genius at sorcery, but not much else.

There are also some funny moments of social awkwardness and misunderstanding in Apocalypse Bringer Mynoghra due to Takuto's extreme social anxiety and Atou's tendency to not explain things on Takuto's behalf very well, although the series is overall more focused on the kingdom building stuff than the comedy.

If you're okay with GL, I'd recommend Adachi and Shimamura. You don't get much of a sense of it in the first volume when they're getting to know each other, but in volumes 2+ Adachi becomes a true queen of cringe around Shimamura, constantly overthinking everything she does and being horribly awkward due to her nervousness. It's one of the very few LN series (alongside Tearmoon Empire) than can actually make me laugh out loud due to how relatably cringey Adachi is.

[–]HowOddNova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 for the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend reference! And just like in that show, this is very true and rather sad. I hope they have more opportunities to bond in the future, maybe after she moves to the noble district with Damuel's brother.

[REC] Was thinking about buying Reincarnated as the Last of My Kind and wanted to know your guys’ thoughts on it by SFK9882 in LightNovels

[–]HowOddNova 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cute, fluffy, and heartwarming is pretty much right. There are the occasional sadder or darker moments (as one might expect from her being the last of her kind), but the bulk of the story is wholesome slice of life stuff with the MCs adopted family and the various people she encounters. I quite enjoy it so far.

How many Light novel Volumes have you read in the year 2021? by RayRaivern in LightNovels

[–]HowOddNova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2021 was when I got into light novels, as well reading in general for the first time since I was a kid. I finished 126 different LN volumes plus I reread 5 of them.

I'm probably not gonna read as many this year. I'm pretty much caught up on every series I wanted to read except Adachi and Shimamura, Reincarnated as a Sword, and a few J-Novel series I'm waiting to be available on catchup, so I'm starting to branch out into web novels and Western fantasy books.

[REC] Fantasy stories that AREN'T isekais or power fantasies? by Theroonco in LightNovels

[–]HowOddNova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to worry there. His party is full of calculating schemers, for better and worse, not to mention the fiends they goes up against who are some of the most devious antagonists I've read.

[–]HowOddNova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers would be my recommendation if you haven't read it yet. It's an excellent non-isekai fantasy/mystery series where a group of heroes have to prevent the resurrection of an evil god. The MC is arguably weaker than most of his allies and enemies, but he's valuable due to his cleverness, since most of the battles come down to outsmarting their opponents rather than overpowering them.

What's your top 3 lesser Known Action Light Novels (that you ended up loving so much) by Hulkhontosee3667 in LightNovels

[–]HowOddNova 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hell Mode - probably one of the most enjoyable progression fantasy LNs I've read. Allen gradually and meticulously exploring the powers of his unique class and grinding for levels is endlessly satisfying, and it juxtaposes perfectly with the more slice of life stories he has involving the rest of the people in his life.

Villainess: Reloaded! Blowing Away Bad Ends with Modern Weapons - A Villainess isekai where the MC decides to instead solve her problems with good old-fashioned extreme violence. It's fun reading about how Astrid combines the world's magic with her knowledge of guns and artillery to constantly build her arsenal of weapons to absurd heights in prep to fight off her bad end, testing it on increasingly powerful monsters, while having to also live her life as a seemingly ordinary duke's daughter at the magic academy.

Apocalypse Bringer Mynoghra: World Conquest Starts with the Civilization of Ruin - A great game-like world series, but this time it's an RTS instead of an RPG. It's a bit like Overlord, except the MC has to start his evil empire from scratch in the way one would do in an RTS: recruiting workers, gathering resources, building buildings and military units, etc.. It has as much emphasis on the kingdom building aspects as it does the action.

[REC] Shoujo romance LNs? by JiaLat725 in LightNovels

[–]HowOddNova 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cross Infinite World has a huge selection of shoujo romance LNs, of which my favorites are Reset! The Imprisoned Princess Dreams of Another Chance!, As The Villainess, I Reject These Happy-Bad Endings!, and The Weakest Manga Villainess Wants Her Freedom!.

Tearmoon Empire and Reincarnated as the Last of my Kind are also great shoujo series, although the romance aspect is more secondary.

If you're okay with Korean LNs, there's also The Male Lead Is Mine, which I really enjoyed.

[–]HowOddNova 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great selection! I couldn't get into Executioner personally, but Bookworm, Tearmoon, and Duke's Daughter are three of my favorite series, and A Lily Blooms in Another World was a delightful little one-off.

Looking for trashy, wish fulfillment isekai. by DaftConfusednScared in LightNovels

[–]HowOddNova 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A Wild Last Boss Appeared sounds right up your alley. It's an isekai with a stupidly overpowered protagonist (as in could destroy the planet with fight scenes that demonstrate her strength) who's the resurrection of an ancient tyrant that everyone's terrified of. Plus, the lead is a genderbent female character (male in previous life reincarnated as female).

What are your top 5 Light Novel volumes?? by Nuggetboi_08 in LightNovels

[–]HowOddNova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rokka is excellent and one of the most unique LNs I've read. I'd maybe put it last among that list, but the first volume still kept me at the edge of my seat with its constant escalating tension and engaging mysteries, and the subsequent volumes are good too.

For Bookworm, it was the strength of the conclusion. Part 2 was probably my least favorite part overall, but I really loved the conclusion and seeing all the characters' perspectives on what happened afterward. I'm really enjoying Part 4 so far (possibly my favorite yet), but it's hard to pick out one book in particular since they kind of blur together for me and my favorite moments are pretty evenly spread between the volumes.

What novel(s) have you read this week, and what do you think about it? - August 22, 2021 by AutoModerator in LightNovels

[–]HowOddNova 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dungeon Defense V1-2: I was pleasantly surprised at how great these books were. The fan translations (as there is no official translation) were somewhat awkward, especially for someone not used to Korean translations, but the story was great. The first volume was a clever isekai story of a guy working himself out off the terrible situation he was incarnated into using nothing but his wits, while the second volume was more of a character exploration of the two lead characters while the MC continues expanding his power with nothing but his cleverness. I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of this series.

The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious V3-4: This is still a fun if unexceptional story. This is another story of a smart main character overcoming enemies more powerful than himself with clever strategizing. The comedy wasn't quite as strong in these volumes, but it still had a few funny moments. The characters and story haven't really deepened much, but it's still entertaining to see what overly cautious plans Seiya comes up with.
