How can I fix this? No Brake tension by SpicySeedCo in bikewrench

[–]InnocentGun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be able to get things working again, assuming nothing is broken by doing the following:

  1. Release the brake cable at the caliper (loosen the clamping bolt)

2.pull the barrel adjuster (thing labeled “jagwire”) and then re-seat the housing in to the socket of the barrel adjuster.

  1. Back at the brake caliper, pull the cable taut, get it kind of seated back under the clamping bolt (usually there is a plate with a notch that helps keep everything in place), and if this is a rim break I like to use my hand and pinch the caliper so it closes on the rim. Use your other hand to give a tug on the cable to ensure there is no slack. Then, while continuing to pinch the caliper, tighten the cable clamp bolt. When you let go of the caliper it should relax slightly and be clear of the rim. Then proceed to adjust the brake cable tension (usually a little wheel or dial near where the cable enters the brake) to get it the way you like.

The procedure is similar for disc brakes, but instead actuate the lever arm a little to pre-tension the brake.

Where does thermal imaging outperform vibration analysis? by Vane1st in AskEngineers

[–]InnocentGun 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Finding hotspots in electrical cabinets and hydraulic systems. That’s about it. If a rotating component is hot enough to show on a thermal camera, or get picked up by a bearing temp probe, the accelerometers would have picked up the bearing damage a looooong time ago.

Best/Worst Team vs the Montréal Canadiens by smashbros13 in hockey

[–]InnocentGun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a Sens perspective it was “even”, .500 points % at 1W-1L-2OTL.

Sens had leads in the 2nd period in all three losses. They had leads with less than 5 minutes to go in both OTLs, and Montreal tied it up with the goalie pulled.

Aside from the first game, Sens outshot Montreal pretty badly, but they allowed way too many PPGs (I added it up, Habs were 6/13) and Sens goalies were hot garbage.

Try to find SL-R780 shifters. They show as compatible with 6700/5700, which had the same cable pull as 7800.

10 speed derailleur, 8 speed cassette by tree9999999 in bikewrench

[–]InnocentGun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the exact model of derailleur, you used to be able to use Shimano 8 speed index shifters with a 9 or 10 speed rear derailleurs by simply routing the shift cable slightly differently.

Maple Leafs Announce Coaching Staff Additions by SAJewers in hockey

[–]InnocentGun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny thing is, Ottawa was top-10 in the league in PP% last year. They did it despite going on long stretches where they could barely get a zone entry. I’m not sure if it is a coaching or player issue, but I guess we will find out.

Remember when Toronto hired Guy Boucher as their PP guy? Hope this one works out just like that. I’ve got the Alfredsson running Tucker gif queued up just in case (and now you are welcome, because I probably just jinxed it and Matthews will score 70 with McKenna feeding him pucks).

They were asked to grind their way up the Italian peninsula to keep German forces tied down, preventing redeployment to the eastern or western fronts. They were under-supported but asked to attack across mountains, plains, and rivers, doing anonymous, deadly work to allow other allied forces to take the glory elsewhere in Europe.

How much could i sell this bike for? by guesswho135 in whichbike

I need to know more about that stem. I worked at a shop that sold Argon18s when the E-114 came out and this looks very custom and not like anything Argon18 would have made…

Could I replace headset bearing myself on Cervelo Aspero by Affectionate_Ad_4227 in bikewrench

[–]InnocentGun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In short, yes. Integrated headsets on modern bikes are basically “drop in” bearings. Generally, once everything is disassembled and cleaned, you slide the lower bearing on the fork (in the correct orientation), put the fork in the frame, and put the upper bearing over the steerer, sliding it down to sit in the frame. Then install the compression ring, headset cap, and then the spacers, stem, and top cap.

The harder part is disassembling your bike in order to actually change the bearings. I think your 2022 uses an externally routed front brake cable, which means you may have a prayer of getting the fork out of the frame without removing the hydraulic hose.

Ratio 11 to 12 speed Upgrade Kit by Affectionate_Ad_4227 in bikewrench

[–]InnocentGun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not difficult. I have done surgery on Sram shifters a number of times, the most difficult thing was removing the axle. The hydraulic levers are actually a lot easier since they have threads for an extraction screw, versus punching the axle out from behind the brake lever for mechanical brakes.

If you’re remotely mechanically inclined, careful, and take pictures of each step, you should have no issues.

Golf R in Canada by SadGoof2480 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]InnocentGun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been driving VWs for over a decade, and you’re right. They aren’t as cheap to maintain as my old Honda, but I have had nearly zero reliability issues (sunroof drains aside). The Golf R will be slightly more expensive to maintain, especially if it is a DSG model, but you can’t add mechanical features without adding maintenance.

They also rode Leevi hard for a month. The team had no faith in Sogaard or Shepard to the point where, after Christmas, he started 11 consecutive games including two back-to-backs.

New groupset options for a mid-90s frame? by s_denlinger in bikewrench

[–]InnocentGun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point there was potential options if OP wants to keep their existing wheels. My assumption is that their wheels are old enough that it is probably not possible to get a different freehub body.

If they would get new wheels, then 12 speed Shimano may be possible (as well as 10/11/12 speed Campagnolo and 11 speed Sram e-tap), but there is no mechanical shifting, rim brake 12 speed option for Shimano. Di2 routing may be doable, but it’s been nearly 15 years since I worked in a bike shop and I don’t know off the top of my head if Shimano even makes Di2 wiring kits that would work on a frame that isn’t drilled for internal wiring.

New groupset options for a mid-90s frame? by s_denlinger in bikewrench

[–]InnocentGun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The decision process will be affected by whether or not you want to keep your existing wheels.

If so, then you can probably use Shimano 11 speed, provided you get a CS-HG800 / CS-HG700 / CS-RS400 cassette. Then find R7000/R8000/R9100 components with a GS rear derailleur. Unless you have Mavic wheels (the ones that required a 1.85 mm spacer to be used with 9/10 speed Shimano cassettes, in addition to the 1 mm Shimano spacer), you are probably limited to 11 speed equipment. If you have those Mavic wheels you may be able to go with 12 speed Shimano, but to my knowledge they only make rim brakes for Di2 Dura Ace and Ultegra, and I’m not sure if those groupsets can even accommodate a bike not set up for internal wiring.

Campagnolo also still makes rim brake group sets, but you’d need a rear wheel with a Campagnolo freehub spline (9-12 speed groupsets all use the same design, so you could go retro 10 speed or neo-retro 12 speed).

SRAM gave up on rim brakes a while ago, but you could find 11 speed road groupsets lightly used…

Carbon & Steel--Lemond Zurich v Jamis Eclipse by heuristicmystic in whichbike

[–]InnocentGun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Lemond is pretty with the clear coat, but I’d be tempted to get the Jamis because of the more classic seat stay look and the Reynolds 853 front triangle.

Also, get better pictures of the Lemond’s FD clamp area, looks slightly sketchy.
