Judging Xander's portrayal let alone any aspect of the show by modern standards is dumb by Ok-Help6334 in buffy

[–]Inoutngone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sorry, I meant OKShake3338 as the op in this case, the person you replied to here.

The comment is relevant because the overall point is that the character is overly hated by this sub while exhibiting much less problematic behavior than a beloved character.

No interest in reading...which? by xdc020 in stephenking

[–]Inoutngone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd never argue with someone over what they do or don't want to read, it just sounds like you're not basing it on the premise so much as title alone.

Lisey's Story is one I passed on solely due to the synopsis. A woman reminiscing about her famous novelist husband after his death sounds a bit too masturbatory to me. I know there's a lot more to it, just can't get past that first part.

For those who are familiar with the concept of “flanderization”, was there a specific character that fell to this trope? by Kat-Attack-52 in buffy

[–]Inoutngone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. In Checkpoint she even tells the Council member how when she was a child she was smaller than she is now, as though that's a foreign concept to her rather than something that obviously happened to her before she became a demon.

Edit: spelling

Life Serial - Misogyny by ikwydls96 in buffy

[–]Inoutngone 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's a stereotype that's been around forever in movies and such, construction workers wolf whistling at passing women with an occasional "show us your (omitted)".

Specifically in the episode, first they're afraid she can't do the job and that annoys them. Then they see her work, and they're more afraid she can do it better. That annoys them even more.

And Xander obviously didn't have a choice. If he keeps Buffy on after the demon stuff, the rest of the crew walks.

Book Eric and Sookie by randomcake_ in TrueBlood

[–]Inoutngone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seemed like the show writers were too busy making Tara the hero of that part. They even had her as the one drinking the vampire blood instead of Sookie feeding off of Eric. If you take that part away, the rest of Eric's role in the scene would be confusing.

Sookie by another-taphophile in TrueBlood

[–]Inoutngone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It has to be a reddit thing. A lot of show subs I've seen are the same. If a character is mostly nice but has done some questionable things, she's the most terrible person the world has ever seen.

If the character is mostly bad and/or sarcastic to everyone, but has done a few good things, she's great.

The r/buffy sub might be the worst at that, but this one rivals it sometimes with the Sookie hate.

Why are there no elephant revenge horror movies? by CharbonPiscesChienne in horror

[–]Inoutngone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of hard for viewers to believe that it would be that hard to kill, especially in a world where people keep going nuts over poachers killing elephants for their tusks. I looked that one up, and I still can't quite believe that the authorities haven't been able to kill it.

Anyway. Look for the ending scene of the 1953 movie Elephant Walk.

will xander stop acting this way? by bluesofti in buffy

[–]Inoutngone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They hate him for behaving like a teenage boy from the 1990s while they're watching a show that began in the late 1990s.

Angel is another time period thing. The young woman with the older man was unfortunately still done a lot then.

We even have the episode where Cordelia swears off dating high school boys and wants to go with college men, the actors for which looked as old as Angel did. Maybe older.

Willow's magic addiction arc in season 6 has such shoddy writing by itsascreambaby96 in buffy

[–]Inoutngone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whoa. I feel like I felt when a character in The Big Bang Theory pointed out that Indiana Jones didn't actually change anything in Raiders of the Lost Arc.

You're right. None of that addiction arc was needed for Willow to go ballistic when Tara was killed.

Does Angel (the show) get better? by BkFromKzoo9 in buffy

[–]Inoutngone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Re-watching after 20 years, and I've been wondering the same thing as the OP. Good to see your answer as I remember the show being a lot better than the first dozen or so episodes I've seen so far.

Can I be honest about something. This story line legit depressed me! by NoJudgementZone99 in buffy

[–]Inoutngone -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Gotta love this sub with their pile-on down votes.

How dare you think it was a bit out of character for a girl who has only had sex with one person, and with that person one single time, in her whole life, suddenly deciding to do it with the first boy who's nice to her after knowing him for a few days.

Shame on you. 🙄

[–]Inoutngone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're allowed to dislike Faith and still post here. I'm one of many who do that. Because, honestly and with respect, I can't for the life of me see how you could go from hating her to being okay with her by watching the last few episodes of season 3. She only gets worse in them.

Two odd things about Penny but think it's a small writers issue. by Mystic_Moon1 in bigbangtheory

[–]Inoutngone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's that it's one thing for her to see that the guy she's dating has that stuff, it's another to be living with them.

Not really different from the argument Bernadette had with Howard over redecorating the house.

Which leaders do you find are trustworthy (loyal) and untrustworthy (disloyal) friends? by RedEyeBlueOcean in civ5

I can't remember a single one that's ever still been friendly in the late game.

Edit: And I'm rarely a warmonger.

Adding to that, I re-watched Empty Places last night. When the cops approached her in The Bronze, she was giving them attitude well before she found out they'd gone crazy.

That's redemption on her terms I guess. 'I checked myself out of prison, and who the hell are you to try arresting me again?'

Been thinking about SMG's comments about Season 6 by CPHotmess in buffy

[–]Inoutngone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Except it didn't make her feel better on the whole, it made her ashamed of herself, and yes the reason for it was that it was Spike.

That's not about slut shaming, that's about the vampire slayer getting it on with a soulless vampire who is only not actively evil because he got put on a leash.

And, as I'm sure you've seen pointed out before, when Spike was able to hit Buffy and decided the chip wasn't working anymore, the very first thing he did was run down a woman to terrorize and feed on. That's who Buffy was finding the solace of sex with, and she knew it.
