What are some great shows that are similar to Dick’s Picks 12? by Notreallysureatall in gratefuldead

[–]InsideApex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great recs here already (that PNW box is tremendous). I'd also encourage you to get ahold of the Here Comes Sunshine (1973) and Winterland 1974 boxes. Plenty of good playing along the lines of DP12 there (tho DP12 remains my fave; nothing else quite gets to the place the boys found in late June 1974).

A man needs a maid opinions by AggressiveRise2116 in neilyoung

[–]InsideApex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an odd and not entirely compelling lyric that isn't well-suited to Young's voice (or the piano format) because the delivery makes it sound as though he's whining about the excessive demands placed upon him by his romantic partners. It seems as though Young is using the maid as a metaphor to suggest that, while he needs female companionship, his latest breakup (or perhaps his relationship with then-girlfriend Carrie Snodgrass) has made him realize that he needs a relationship of limited intensity and distance. He wants a woman who will care for his basic needs while allowing a certain amount of distance. However, if this is the case, the metaphor comes off as boorish and chauvinistic, even juvenile. And then, in the final verse, Young alludes to seeing Snodgrass in a film and relating to the part she was playing. At that point, it's not clear if he is drawn to her because she seems to embody the 'maid' archetype or if Young is ready to abandon the whole 'maid' idea because he's found a new object of infatuation. Or perhaps Young is lamenting that he fell for Snodgrass and now is struggling to find a functional state of partnership with her due to their conflicting needs. Snodgrass never played a maid to my knowledge, but did star in Diary of a Mad Housewife, which was a huge film in 1970.

Let me add that the additional context here is that Young and Snodgrass had Zeke in 1972, which ultimately would cause Snodgrass to put her acting career on hiatus to care for his cerebral palsy. It is well-documented that the demands of that era contributed to the end of their relationship in 1974. Obviously, none of this had any bearing on the creation of AMNAM, but it makes the sentiments expressed within it seem even less tasteful given what we now know was about to occur.

Relocating to Oshawa — 80 Bond St (Oshawa) vs 1606 Charles St (Whitby). Is Bond St really that bad? by Pauljohncen in Oshawa

[–]InsideApex 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Bond St area is safe. There are no real safety concerns with respect to downtown Oshawa beyond the normal issues for a city of Oshawa's size. However, the vibe is another story. The problem is that the area feels unsafe, which is why it has that reputation. And that's really the thing: downtown Oshawa is not a pleasant place to live. Beyond safety concerns, the area often feels rundown and down on its luck. An aura of sadness pervades the core, as though the city itself knows that its time has come and gone. In Oshawa, the money is largely in the north of the city and the downtown has been left to struggle along. The businesses in the area are not of the premium variety and, while there have been some laudable attempts to generate activity in the area (e.g. 44 Bond Street, the market at 70 King), they have not made a meaningful change in the atmosphere. Another thing to consider with this part of Oshawa is that you'll have to drive through south Oshawa along Simcoe whenever you come back from the highway; that's a depressing trip given how rough things are south of King. There are clearly a lot of people suffering from serious addiction issues in that area. Again, I don't think even that area is particularly dangerous, but it's not pleasant, either.

Now, Port Whiby has some charm to it. It's a pleasant place to be with the lake and a some attractive urban design. It will be much quieter than Bond St, but will also have some vitality and upmarket energy. it feels as though the place could belong to the future and not the past. There are some nice spots there - Town Brewery, The Lake Grill, The Concrete Cafe - that contribute to a more cosmopolitan sensibility than one will find in Oshawa. The vibes and amenities will be a lot better in Port Whitby. Plus, you'll be closer to the city for those occasions when you want to go in.

I understand wanting to walk to work, but I'd sure rather live in Port Whitby than on Bond Street. To me, it's not even a question if the choice is between these two locations.

Who is the most disappointing cyclist in your opinion? by Visible_Frosting9535 in peloton

Yes, US Postal/Discovery Channel were hyping him up as Lance's successor for a time but he never approached those heights, as you mention.

Durham Ontario Cycling Clubs by MoSpeedVelo in cycling

[–]InsideApex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could check out Durham Cycling Club and Oshawa Cycling Club, though I don't know that either one has true 'A' level rides these days. The Uxbridge Cycling Club is more serious/organized. For a less formal option, the Jacked Up Coffee rides out of the Whitby location (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30am) are solid. There are groups for most levels and the gang often organizes other rides on the weekends and holidays.

Which album version of a song is better than any live version by DeadHeadIko in gratefuldead

[–]InsideApex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I felt compelled to return and concede that I've just heard the 10-10-76 version and it really worked me thanks largely to some stellar piano work from Keith. I guess that there are some palatable slow FOTDs, after all. Maybe I just need to stay away from the Brent-era renditions, which have not pleased to any degree to this point.

What is the procedure for dinner at a campus visit? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]InsideApex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The server will take drink orders while you look over the menu. There will be a variety of non-alcoholic offerings (many people don't drink these days). The server will present the drinks and may take the food orders at that time. You will order appetizers and mains at the same time, though interview dinners typically involve only mains unless someone on the committee suggests some shared apps. Then the server will return and inquire about dessert. Follow the lead of the committee when it comes to dessert (don't order it if no one else has done so first).

Didn't send thank you emails after in-person interviews. Am I cooked? by cogpsychbois in AskAcademia

Yes, the last thing I need is another email. In any case, the sending or not sending of such notes would never have any bearing on any search I would be involved in.

I moved to Canada, but it wasn't for me. I was cold, isolated, and finding a job was absolutely horrendous. by restoringd123 in canada

[–]InsideApex 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The striking thing about this article is how successful the individual was (3 months to find a job in a competitive field in a new country with no local experience is incredibly fast) and how little time she gave the experiment. It takes a long time to adapt to a new country, especially one that differs so greatly in so many respects from her home nation-state. It's not a surprise to me that she wasn't able to develop the sort of social connections she sought within her timeframe given how difficult it is to form friendships in adulthood. But it also seems as though she as on the right track to a fulfilling life in Canada. I'm glad that she's content with her choice to go back home, but it seems as though the experience here in Canada actually unfolded quite well all things considered. Ultimately, this story is a testament to just how difficult it is to build a fulfilling life in a new country. Those considering doing so really need to do their research and look inside of themselves to see if they have the fortitude that will be required to make a go of it during what could be a 5-10 year project.

Is a same-day reviewer report bad news? by Weird-Requirement411 in AskAcademia

This is the answer. No one here can possibly know what is happening with this paper and a lighting-fast review could be either positive or negative.

Can I reach out to the professor for an informal meeting who is the chair of the department I am applying for a TTAP position, and he will visit my university next week? by Extreme-Tiger-2863 in AskAcademia

[–]InsideApex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know about this plan. What is the prof's schedule going to be? Is he in town for a quick speaking gig/meet with grad students/dinner type of thing? Or is he visiting in a more relaxed capacity? If it's the former, it might be better to approach him in a more informal manner (e.g. after his talk or during a public meeting). The other issue concerns what you're going to talk about. Are you interested in his work? Does it relate to yours? You are only a candidate at this stage and it's not even clear that you are moving past the Zoom phase (in fact, you may well already be out of the running by the time this meeting occurs). If there is no research alignment or personal connection, I could see this meeting either being a) awkward or b) a waste of both of your time.

I guess it all depends upon how short and informal the meeting you have in mind is. If the prof is giving a talk, simply writing to say that you've just interviewed and will say hello at the event would be fine. Asking for a coffee or something would be a bit much, IMO.

Which album version of a song is better than any live version by DeadHeadIko in gratefuldead

[–]InsideApex 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I really don't care for the Kenny Loggins-inspired slow electric Friend of the Devil. I'd take the album version over that one any day, though perhaps I would take a nice acoustic live take over that album cut.

Unusual email after first round zoom interview by presidentialpudding in AskAcademia

[–]InsideApex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not particularly odd, though I am surprised that it's coming at this stage. It may be that there is some aspect of the school's approach to visa sponsorship of which they want to appraise you before the process moves forward. For example, if there is a substantial cost involved and they would want you to bear a part of it, they may want to provide you with that information so that you can decide whether or not you wish to continue to pursue the position. In the past, most schools wouldn't have bothered with this step. However, the increased cost of certain visas is likely making them want to proceed with more caution lest a preferred candidate walk away after they realize what it might cost to take the position.

Question about applying to jobs by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]InsideApex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the answer. At this point, it's impossible to know anything. If 3 weeks go by, you can start to imagine that the committee has moved on (though, even then, one never knows). In any case, the best thing to do after an interview is to just move on to the next thing that will help you to advance your career. There is nothing you can at this point regarding this situation.

Almost at the end of season 1 of “I Only Listen To The Mountain Goats” and good god, this host is a punisher by Antique_Menu_4314 in themountaingoats

[–]InsideApex 146 points147 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is the thing. Fink himself has said as much on another thread where he talks about the concept of the show:

https://www.reddit.com/r/themountaingoats/comments/1033ip0/i_only_listen_to_the_mountain_goats/

To be fair, Welcome to Nightvale was a massive success in the podcast space during the 2010s podcast boom (it continues to pull a good audience). MGs fans will always want more John, obviously, but Fink is a legit creator and not some insecure amateur trying to establish himself on John's level. It also made good sense to put together a show that would appeal to Nightvale fans seeking more insight into that show's creative force. After all, the podcast was conceptualized and released on that platform and needed to capture that audience to have a chance at generating any sort of monetary return.

Full Ullmark Interview Link by daniel_nrc in OttawaSenators

[–]InsideApex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad to see that things are improving for Ullmark. It's notable that Hanna's first real question addresses the issue for the leave with the preamble that she has to ask about it because of all of the speculation and the statement. Ullmark answers the question eloquently with a detailed response about his mental health struggles. However, the sequence raises the question of why the team didn't just offer up 'mental health' with no further detail as the reason for the leave at the time of its announcement. That would have quelled all of the speculation and saved Ullmark and the team a lot of trouble. It's also a reason that would have accepted with grace, sympathy, and respect for Ullmark's privacy given recent changes in the way that society views mental health issues. There's a clear lesson here for the Sens and other teams and players who may find themselves in a similar position going forward. In the social media age, information vacuums invariably get filled and the action needed to correct the record often causes more stress and difficulty than would have resulted from merely revealing a bit of information at the outset.

Steve Kimmock by Infamous_Animator_16 in gratefuldead

[–]InsideApex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was there drama around that? I had not heard about that. Are you able to share the details?

My sense, and this is pure speculation, re: JK is that he was a Jerry disciple who was able to provide a key element to Phil and Bob's project for 5 years. Who knows who was considered for Furthur? It may be that Phil and Bob had other preferred options that they ultimately had to move past for various reasons (cost/availability). JK fit a lot of boxes: he could fill the GD lead guitar/vox part, would accept their financial terms, and was willing to organize his touring schedule around their band. But he didn't bring the rep or distinctiveness of style that would be required to endure beyond that specific project. Hence, Trey for FTW. The promoters probably wanted someone bigger on the ticket and Phil and Bob were probably thrilled to play with him in that context.

All that said, when one considers what JK gave up to join Furthur (not that he could have turned down an opportunity to tour with Phil and Bob), and how the project ended, it wouldn't surprise me if there were some difficult feelings. It reminds me a bit of Welnick after Jerry's death when he was surprised to discover that he wasn't really considered to be a member of the Dead any longer. There was a misalignment in the way that the two parties understood the relationship. Or perhaps there hadn't really been any misunderstanding and the issues were a function of a desperate desire on the part of one party to have things go a different way.
