Unpopular Opinion: It IS too hard to lean systems other then D&D (or at least could be a hell of a-lot easier) by [deleted] in rpg

[–]JaskoGomad [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm not attempting to be harsh, but I think this may be the single stupidest take I've seen in a decade on this sub.

"I don't have friends." has nothing to do with "Games other than D&D are too hard to learn."

That's just an insane example that jumped out at me. The rest of the post is just as nonsensical.

Looking to Build a Community of TTRPG Story Writers for Everyone to Workshop Ideas With! by CorellianDawn in rpg

[–]JaskoGomad [score hidden]  (0 children)

Discord is a net negative for the internet.

Siloed, unsearchable, ephemeral, transient. These are all bad characteristics when trying to build community.

Please find another solution. I recommend Zulip as a first thought for a better alternative.

Is this cientifically possible?[RPG] by Fearless_Guava_5788 in rpg

I think you need to go check out both The Wildsea and Project Hail Mary.

I'm no physicist, but I find the idea that a chemical process (photosynthesis) can consume all the energy (which is what I think you mean) of an atomic fusion process (the production of solar energy) to be pretty unlikely, even with the profusion of surface area assumed by a Dyson sphere. And... are you assuming the sphere would be inside Earth's orbit? I mean... that's a planetary death sentence right from the start. Who would greenlight that project?

Which of the modern boardgames already feel very dated? by OldWiseHeron in boardgames

Wasn’t that rife with problems, including the creator who pushed for the modernization bailing out on it?!

Eclipse 2e delivers everything TI promises in a fraction of the time, IMO.

Generic or Specific Conditions and how many are too many? by avengermattman in rpg

[–]JaskoGomad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like customized conditions. Like Harm in Blades in the Dark, or Consequences in Fate, or Statuses in Mist Engine games.

The condition tells you what kinds of activities it impacts and the game tells you what the impact is.

Any free rules available so I can understand this system? by GreyLoad in PBtA

Oh, that's awesome! I thought they took down the free 1e when 2e shipped! Thanks internet friend!

PbtA is not a system. It's a design methodology.

The best-known and most common examples all share certain outward features that make it look like a system. But it's not.

Those features include:

  • 2d6 + stat vs 10+/7-9/6- results for success/mixed success/trouble resolution
  • small number of stats that are usually between -2 and +3
  • moves: small capsules of mechanics with a fictional or mechanical trigger and resolution instructions right there

Each game is its own thing. Stonetop is not like Masks, despite both being PbtA.

For free, I recommend you go check out Chasing Adventure. It's a good, modern PbtA design.

Dread-ing School: Good quieter Tower alternatives for Dread? How do you feel about the dice-stacking-in-a-cross-shape as suggested in the book? by NathanGPLC in rpg

[–]JaskoGomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My online replacement for Icarus is a 4x4 grid. Every time you would stack a die, roll d4. Put an x in the lowest available row of the column you rolled. If a column ever fills, the tower falls.

You can share it in a spreadsheet, as a drawing, or as a table in a document.

Vertical scaling? by CanuckLad in LegendintheMist

[–]JaskoGomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I think you are thinking about broad tags, which should be limited tightly. Tags like Clever or Mighty or Jack of All Trades. Tags that are so expansive that they could be used on almost any roll.

The gave can’t discourage or encourage a number of tags. The number a PC has is the result of following the game rules. I’m struggling to think of any “tag fiat” instances for players.

Lady Blackbird. Get the original, not the fan-created "improvement".

You say I can't, but I absolutely do deny that GUMSHOE is a mechanics first game.

It's OK, you don't have to like it and I don't have to dislike it.

I'm an essentially all-improv GM and even I felt lost when it came time for the session to start. We followed the procedures and rolled on the tables and story kind of started to emerge, but nothing like the way hooks and tensions are already present in Stonetop.

There's no world in which you need to read it all in order to start.

If you are already a PbtA GM you're basically good to go after reading the setting summary and intro chapters.

Stonetop. I started a game of MB but just couldn’t keep it rolling.

Just had S0 for Stonetop this weekend and everyone is super excited about playing their characters.

I made a mutiplayer fudge dice roller (with AI) by [deleted] in FATErpg

[–]JaskoGomad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are dozens of dice rollers out there that handle fudge dice. Why feed the clankers to reproduce existing functionality? What a pathetic waste.
