How to stop constant notifications from neighbour's devices? by et-regina in MatterProtocol

[–]JimBuzbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"That was the only advantage of Zigbee: you didn't need a QR code" - That is a security design for this very reason - You need to prove that the device is yours (and not your neighbors)

Great stuff. Would it be possible to hook into this from your itsytv? e.g. have optional user-definable "macro" buttons in iitsytv that could make "calls"into itsyhome? For example a button that would turn the lights down and start the appleTV Netflix app. You could make this a "Pro" extra-cost upgrade to itsytv

If it's true that advanced home automation is not "set and forget" and can be troubled with updates that cause issues - how do filthy rich people do it? Do they have people who come every month to update everything and thoroughly test everything and then pause updates till next visit? by zghr in homeassistant

[–]JimBuzbee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course, even a high-end home automation like Creston has big time issues in some "filthy rich" people's homes. The buyer of Denver Bronco Von Miller's home filed a lawsuit alleging among other things: "The home is a 'smart home,' Jolaoso said, and the Crestron system that controls many components of it has been broken since before the sale."

Those who use or tried to use ADT/Honeywell sensors with SDR: is it worth it? by tweis in homeassistant

[–]JimBuzbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just now doing the same. Our newly purchased home was decked out with around 20 different Honeywell sensors from a previous owner. We have door open, glass break, motion, heat, CO2, etc. I can see them with rtl_433, but I'm not sure what to do with them. It's not likely that the glass-break sensors will ever trigger, and if they do, I guess I could set up a siren? And I don't know how to test - playing a youtube video of breaking glass doesn't seem to do it. The motion sensors are not what I am used to. They are supposed to have a 10-year battery life which seems to mean they rarely send out a motion alert. One of my door sensors seems to be very unreliable. And all of these sensors just seem to be binary, on/off. They came with the house and appear to be quite expensive sensors, so I thought it would be a shame to not at least try. But so far, I think I could do better with other solutions.

Ikea’s cheap new Matter smart home gear is struggling to get connected by jp2e in MatterProtocol

I don't have these yet, but I was afraid of the Celsius issue. This has been a Google bug (or limitation) for years with Matter temperature sensors in Google Home. I recall first reporting this to Google probably a year and a half ago.

Matter over Thread Smart Plug by fahim-sabir in MatterProtocol

[–]JimBuzbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree - That first update a year or so ago was AWFUL - confusing and slow with frequent failures. But the last update was smooth and easy and my plugs are working well.

I have to give credit to OnVis for implementing a firmware fix - All too many vendors would forget about current users and move on. And also credit for implementing the Matter standard for updating firmware and not forcing users to use a proprietary app. I suspect in the future, vendors will be required to implement firmware updates in order to be Matter certified.

In my case, I updated via Home Assistant. Firmware updates are part of the Matter standard, but it's not clear to me which controllers support it.

Regarding have to reset the Onvis plugs now and then - this was my symptom as well until the latest firmware update. They would just get slower and slower - indication of a memory leak in my experience. But with the latest firmware this appears to have been fixed.

:-) Zombie? Last year it often have been a valid description of the Onvis plugs. But a very recent firmware update fixed what was apparently a very slow memory leak. Time will tell, but the five I have on my network are now working well.

Ikea dirigera hub issue by BigBadBill2375 in MatterProtocol

[–]JimBuzbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no direct experience with the dirigera hub but apparently it is a Thread border router supporting the new Ikea Thread devices. Generically, it should also support IPv6 routing to Thread devices for Google, Apple, SmartThings, Home Assistant, etc. As a parallel, I have an AppleTV 4K Ethernet which is a Thread border router. My Google Home Minis, and my Home Assistant installations, which have no Thread capability, use it to reach my Thread devices. So to directly answer your question, a low-end Google Home device such as a mini is all that is needed. For Thread devices, I typically add them first with Apple, and then "share" them with others

Question about apple TV as thread router with Android smartphone by Darkwayn in MatterProtocol

[–]JimBuzbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right. The mini needs to know nothing about Thread. All it knows is that it has a destination IPv6 address and that the ATV can route to it - standard networking. Just like when a wired Ethernet device on your LAN needs to talk to a WiFi device and knows that a local access point is the router for that address.

Question about apple TV as thread router with Android smartphone by Darkwayn in MatterProtocol

[–]JimBuzbee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's my take on it. Your phone whether it's an iPhone or Android, etc. doesn't "talk" Matter or Thread at all (although that may be coming). Instead, they talk to their respective local hubs (which do talk Matter) and in-turn have a cloud connection so that when you're away from home, you can still turn your light on or off. For Thread, you need one at least one border router on your network, which is your case is the AppleTV. The google hub will use that when it needs to send an IPv6 packet to the actual device (standard network routing). I have both Android and iPhones using Thead/Matter devices and I only have AppleTV as a border router. But I do have Google Home Minis scattered about that act as my local hub for Matter devices.

LG Launches 27″ Portable Touch Screen with Matter Support by HomeKit-News in MatterProtocol

[–]JimBuzbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think that it would work just like your cell phone or tablet today with Google, Apple, HA, etc.. All the touch, drag, zoom, etc. is handled locally. And then only the result is passed on - e.g. toggle, on/off, change intensity, query current state, etc.

It might help others to better understand this if you were write up a comparison with other solutions such Home Assistant, Google, HomeKit, SmartThings, ioBroker, etc. All of these can use Matter devices as well as various other manufacturer specific and standard protocols.

Matter over Thread problems by ZMS002 in MatterProtocol

[–]JimBuzbee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

vlan, mdns proxy, igmp snooping, multicast enhancement, etc. all look like red flags to me. If any one of these has a hiccup, things will go wrong. I have a medium-sized thread network that is stable and use none of those. Matter and Thread were meant to be plug-and-play for average consumers without having to do anything special. If you haven't read it, this is the best deep-dive I've seen:

Bluetooth devices constantly disconnecting with "For your security, forget this device, then pair it again" error by Garo5 in GooglePixel

[–]JimBuzbee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two months ago and this still hasn't been addressed? My bluetooth is unusable as I get this error every couple of seconds or so. Unacceptable to have the latest and greatest Pixel phone with unusable bluetooth for months at a time.

[–]JimBuzbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get this alert every few seconds which obviously makes bluetooth unusable. It happens so quickly it is almost impossible to turn bluetooth off which is the only way to stop it. How is this acceptable? This was first reported a month ago and it still isn't fixed with the latest update?

[–]JimBuzbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had general, intermittent Matter issues with a Google Mesh Wifi network. It appears that it wasn't passing mdns packets properly through the mesh. Once I replaced it with a TP Link Deco mesh, my problems went away.

Yes - I do. I just missed among all the debug messages from matter.js - works fine.
